How'd I miss this thread? I LOVE roadtrips!

I've done DC-San Diego (4 days)
DC- Vegas (36 Hours)
Mexico City- DC (5 days)
SF-Seattle (2 days)

I do SF-SD pretty regularly

As far as times go:

Vancouver, BC>Greensboro, NC - 46 Hours (2 drivers, stopping only for fuel, restrooms, and food every 5 hours plus 1 30 minute break)
North of Seattle, WA>San Jose, CA via Truckee/Tahoe, CA - 23 Hours (Solo)

Neither were fun but, sight seeing wasn't the goal.

I've also taken my time and seen the sights on other adventures.

Me and the wife will finally get some time off together! Going to drive to Seattle along the coast, and take a train back (sleeper car of course). Less than 4 weeks !

I am in a transitional period with my job, so my wife and I decided to take the great American road trip out west we've always wanted to do. We're leaving August 17 and driving from Raleigh to San Diego. We are gonna take a week to get out there, then take two weeks to take a more leisurely trip back. Planning stops in LA, Vegas, Denver, Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, Carlsbad Caverns, Dallas, and Nashville. We've never been west of Tennessee really so we are both pumped.

Anyone have any experience with renting a car for a 3 week trip?

well, this past weekend, i surprised my wife who's working in Salt Lake City. we live in Monterey, California. I-80 in Nevada is a lot of nothing to be driving through in the middle of the night, especially when your dinner didn't agree with you. but in the end, it was totally worth it.

[Edited on April 10, 2013 at 12:01 AM. Reason : and before anybody asks, it was more cost-effective to drive instead of last minute plane ticket]

^ I was there for work, as usual. No gangbanging unless you count getting screwed, financially, by our clients.

So I am in the midst of a nifty road trip--Monterey, CA to Salt Lake City, UT to Las Vegas, NV to Salt Lake City, UT to Irvine, CA to Monterey CA. Yup, I can't seem to stay away from SLC...

between Salt Lake and Las Vegas,

you'll pass through the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_River_Gorge in NW Arizona on I-15

some of most beautiful Interstate highway miles ever paved.

I have to admit that after having driven through that area 3 times in 2 weeks, that is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Thanks, chembob!

That's a nice drive, but the drive north on I5 from just past Redding, CA to the Oregon border is the most impressive stretch of highway I've ever seen. Mount Shasta is fucking HUGE.

of course, many of my favorite fews are off the Interstate, but the Western Interstates were definitely designed with more than just getting more lanes from point A to point B.

well, I'm biased, but I will put Maine, NH, Vermont, and WV up against the Western states any day. They're both beautiful in their own ways.

No way. NE is beautiful, but it can't compete with Yosemite, Crater Lake, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Glacier NP, Zion, the Olympic peninsula, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, Mt Rainier, Yellowstone, etc

It just can't. Too small an area to compare to the Western states.

I have never driven out west, but it looked pretty cool on Thelma & Louise.

I still feel confident that the Blue Ridge Parkway is the best stretch of road ever.

Any claims to the contrary will be dismissed as envy and ignorance.
