yeah are the radio people picking candidates yet? i'm curious on who they would pick...i really hate romney and huckabee.....thompson is an actor...seriously...we need a really good president...dont be a prick...that leaves mccain...who does actually care about the environment...and wanted the surge which may not have helped anything politically yet, but sure has been better for us....and guilliani...guilliani is basically a dem on a lot of issues and lots of repubs wouldnt want him in...that basically leaves mccain as the only viable republican candidate...ron paul doesnt count because he wont win

why a republican would want anyone other than mccain makes no sense to me...i cant imagine someone "willingly" voting for romney, huckabee, or thompson

seriously, i just don't get hating on Ron Paul, much less calling him any sort of "evil"!

Huckabee...well, I think he's a good dude. He also makes me about as comfortable as I'm ever gonna be with such an overtly Religious Right spawned politician (my hostility is in no way directed towards Christianity--it's to allowing it to have undue influence in government)...I mean, that aspect still makes me uneasy, but he's about the least unappealing example of it I can think of.

...but I am totally not down with him being such a populist. it's the worst kind of GOP platform--social conservative, economic liberal/populist (other than him wanting to overhaul the tax system).

still planning on mine being a vote for McCain or Paul.

Fixed that for you. Bloomberg isn't exactly the anti-tax candidate. When you get down to it, there is little, if any, difference between Giuliani, Clinton, and Bloomberg. The first two pander to their individual demographics, but socially they're pretty close to each other, fiscally it is always hard to tell until they take office.

[quote]seriously, i just don't get hating on Ron Paul, much less calling him any sort of "evil"!/quote]Yeah, at best he's a voice of Constitutional reason (with only a few exceptions), at worse he's a cute old man who clings to his oath of office, something few public officials do at all.

Quote :
" part one: the iowa caucuses
Jason posted on January 4th, 2008
Congrats to Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama and their supporters for winning the Iowa Caucuses last night. While I plan to cover politics a lot more on this here blog this year with my sure to be award-winning series, "Decision 2008: A Black or A Woman," here’s one little note to get the ball rolling.

Mitt Romney’s got a Harvard JD/MBA and founded Bain Capital, and so he’s made more money that your dad and all his friends combined. Rudy went to NYU Law and recorded a record 4,152 convictions and 25 reversals as US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. McCain went to the Naval Academy (I’m assuming his daddy had something to do with that, but the guy lived in a cage for five and a half years!). Fred Thompson has a JD from Vanderbilt and was awesome in Law & Order.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton went to Wellesley and Yale Law and in addition to being pretty intellectually badass, emerged from a very difficult personal and professional scandal because of her husband’s lustiness - much respect for brains and balls. Barack graduated from Columbia and Harvard Law, and, I don’t know, from what I’ve seen is a pretty charming black guy (though I’d like to see him pack on a few more pounds). John Edwards has a JD from UNC and, let’s just say it, is dreamy.

Last night’s Republican winner, Mike Huckabee, went to Ouachita Baptist University and has no advanced degrees. I don’t mean to be a snob about this (even though that’s how it’s going to come off) and I wouldn’t vote Republican if my father was running as a Republican and/or the GOP platform suddenly changed from "Down With Gays and Reading, Up With Jesus and Ain’t Reading" to "Free Handjobs for All Mulgrews," so I guess it’s moot anyway. But there’s no way I’m voting for a presidential candidate who went to a school that I could get into if I took every test in high school left-handed and after several major hits from a nitrous balloon. Not that I’m particularly smart (because that ship sailed in about 7th grade) or that the college I went to (Boston College) is exactly Ivy-covered, but I feel a little more comfortable knowing that my president at least did better on his/her SATs than I did. Call me crazy.

There are major flaws in this argument, namely that perhaps Huckabee got a scholarship to Ouachita Baptist or wanted to stay close to family or loved Jesus too much (he was a minister, after all) to go anywhere else. These are possibilities. Also, our current president went to Yale and has an MBA from Harvard and, well, that hasn’t exactly worked out for us, or, you know, the world and the next few generations of inhabitants of the Middle East. And sure, Mike Huckabee has accomplished much in his life and was governor of Arkansas for 11 years, even though being governor of Arkansas is like being a lifetime achievement award winner at the Special Olympics (and yes, I know Bill Clinton, who I’m a fan of, was governor of Arkansas, but he was also a Rhodes Scholar). But there’s no way that I can in any way support an Arkansan who was a minister and went to Ouachita Baptist University as President of the United States. I mean, wow. I think I just blew my own mind.

Disclaimer: I’m a liberal New York Jew. And no, I’m not Jewish but rather Irish Catholic, but there’s very little difference anyway. I measure success by things like wealth, educational background, and attractiveness of significant other. My world revolves around the Northeast, and people from other parts of the country who do not have breasts scare me a little (actually, non-Northeasterners with breasts scare me a little, too). But here’s the thing: I still only hope that there are enough people out there like me to prevent what happened in 2004 from happening in 2008. Not like me in the sense that last night I drank four Sam Adams Cherry Wheats, beat off twice, and watched five tivo’ed episodes of "Family Guy," but like me in the "having reasonable and reasonably intelligent political ideals" sense. Call me crazy. And if this election unfurls like the one in 2004, I may just be driven mad. "

I know some of you would never understand this because Huckabee is a Christian (like every other candidate in the race) but maybe, just maybe, some people voted for him because they like his position on things?

Wait no, what am I thinking, that would NEVER happen. People voted for him because he is a Christian cult leader!! Ofcourse!

The guy has nearly identical positions to Bush--who by the way has sub 30 approval ratings. I think it's reasonable to assume people didn't vote for him merely because of his positions.

Sorry, but when your religious belief has a track record of saying stupid things like 'the earth is flat' and 'gravity doesn't exist' you really should bite the bullet and trust science just a bit instead of denying things because 'they're not in the bible.'

Religion is having faith in something that has no evidence. You want to say God set in motion a chain of events that caused the big bang, awesome good for you.

Stupidity is believing in something when all evidence points in the contrary. You want to believe the Earth is 5000 years old and evolution doesn't exist, you're an idiot.

While I'm not really a fan of Huckabee, there's a little more to his statement(s) regarding evolution.

This is a partial transcript of his appearance on Bill Maher's show.

Quote :
"

MAHER: So, let me just ask you on a personal level, what were you doing like when you were 22?

HUCKABEE: When I was 22, I was working in communications, doing advertising and public relations, television, that kind of thing.

MAHER: What about 32?

HUCKABEE: When I was 32, I was actually pastoring a Baptist congregation in Texarkana, Arkansas.

MAHER: Wow. Well, that brings me to an interesting point.

HUCKABEE: Okay.

MAHER: Now, in one of the debates, the question was asked of the ten Republicans on the stage, “How many of you do not believe in evolution?” And three candidates raised their hand. You were one of them.

HUCKABEE: Mm-hmm. [affirmative]

MAHER: So…[laughter]…you don’t really believe in evolution?

HUCKABEE: Bill, I believe God created the heavens and the earth. Now, how He did it, I don’t know. I thought the question was utterly silly to be asked in a presidential debate. None of us are running in order to be an eighth grade science teacher. We’re running to be president. It’s really not, to me, a proper yes-or-no question. But if he meant by that, do I believe that it is all about just random selection and that it just happened without any design – designer and anybody who was behind it – no, I don’t believe that. I think there was a God behind it. And that was what I was trying to say. And I still believe that.

MAHER: But evolution is about, like, we came from the monkeys.

HUCKABEE: Yes.

MAHER: You don’t agree with that?

HUCKABEE: I don’t know. I mean, if God six days—

MAHER: [overlapping] Come on, have you ever seen a monkey? [laughter]

HUCKABEE: [overlapping]—or if he took six million years – sure, I have, you know. And, in fact, if evolution—

MAHER: [overlapping] How can you look in a monkey’s eye and want to start a monkey fight like Michael Vick? No.

HUCKABEE: No, I don’t think so. You know, the point is that the whole process of these debates were more like a game show than it was a serious discourse of political discussion. And the yes-and-no, raise-your-hands, that’s nonsense. If you want to have an honest political discussion, we ought to have it. But the questions sometimes were posed, were a little silly.

MAHER: [overlapping] But, why shouldn’t it be part of a political discussion? If someone believes that the earth is 6,000 years old when every scientist in the world tells us it’s billions of years old, why shouldn’t I take that into account when I’m assessing the rationality of someone I’m going to put into the highest office in the land? [applause] [cheers]

HUCKABEE: Well, I think the point, though, Bill, is that we really don’t know. And that’s my whole point. I don’t believe that it matters how long it took. It may have been six billion years. That’s how God may have done it. I just want to make sure that if I’m put on the spot, do I believe that it’s a basically just sort of an accident that all of this happened, this wonderful creation of ours, or do I believe there was a creator behind it – look, I’m going to go on the side that there’s a creator behind it.

MAHER: Okay. Speaking of creators—

HUCKABEE: Yes.

MAHER: [overlapping]—I know you’ve said that Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton – you’ve commented on their marriage and said, you know, a lot of people in my party have a lot of these values and judgments they make, but they, despite their marital difficulties, kept their marriage together, and that that was a good thing.

HUCKABEE: That’s right. [scattered applause]

MAHER: Okay, okay. Was that kind of a sock at Rudy Giuliani? [laughter]

HUCKABEE: No, it wasn’t at all. It was just a matter of simply saying that Republicans can’t have two sets of rules. Look, I’m a Republican. I love my party, but we can’t have two sets of rules, one for the Democrats, one for ourselves. There were a lot of Republicans who were exceptionally harsh toward Bill and Hillary Clinton.

I’m not defending Bill Clinton’s actions. I’m not defending what happened within their marriage. But, what I’ve said was, let’s at least give them credit for keeping their marriage together. And if we, the Republicans, are all about strong families and keeping marriages together because we think that that institution is important, then let’s at least acknowledge and give them credit for making their marriage work, and for, quite frankly, raising a pretty magnificent daughter in Chelsea. [applause] And if anybody ever has known her, she’s turned out all right.

MAHER: And – and I know you are a proud Republican. But why are so many of the Republicans lining up against you and attacking you on your economic policies? They say you sound more like a Democrat than a Republican, economically.

HUCKABEE: Well, I’m not an establishment Republican. I’m not the Republican who’s the favorite of Wall Street. I’m not the Republican who’s the favorite of the K Street lobbyists. But, I’ll tell you, my message is getting through to a lot of people on Main Street. Because when I’m talking about the fair tax, which would eliminate all the taxes on our productivity and replace it with a simple consumption tax, it would end the underground economy. It would completely revitalize the capacity for people at the lowest end of the economic spectrum maybe to reach the next rung on the ladder. I’ll tell you, that’s catchin’ hold with people in this country because they know that the current tax system we have is utterly absurd. Nobody can understand it. It’s counterproductive to a good economy. [applause] And people know that we need to get rid of the IRS and have a different tax system.

MAHER: Okay. Well, Rudy Giuliani scares the hell out of me, so I hope you win. [laughter] And the good news for you, sir, on your birthday, is that this year a Republican dark horse actually could win. Happy birthday, Governor. Good luck to you. [applause]

HUCKABEE: Thank you, Bill.

MAHER: All right. Governor Mike Huckabee. "

He sounds rather reasonable but i cant say that i agree with a consumption tax. it helps the rich and hurts the poor.

(okay, that's super simplified, but by having a flat tax for everyone in the form of a sales tax, its a larger percentage of the lower class, and a smaller percentage of the wealthier class)

paging EarthDogg... maybe you should find the thread on the fair tax, it is not nearly as simple as a flat tax, there is a fair bit of populist mumbo jumbo mixed in as to keep the poor from getting taxed like everybody else. "Prebates" I believe.

It would be nice to see the various tax shelters only available to the super rich be likewise available to us lowly common folk. We ought to be able to save or invest w/o thinking primarily about how to skirt the tax code.

What's politics without "p.m.j"?

I'm just so happy that the FairTax is getting this much attention! Op-Eds in the WSJ, Discussed on Leno, talks shows and pundits for and against... Oh the Joy.

If I were to give The Huckerbee some advice...I'd tone down the "It'll get rid of the underground economy" part. It's true it would help but that's not the thing that will sell it.

He should talk about how the working man will get his whole paycheck. No federal withholding, no social security or medicare taken out. He should emphasize how those who take on extra shifts won't be penalized by the income tax as they move up the tax brackets. How those who are careful with their spending and saving will do great with this system.

re-read it, then...you are missing his two main points:

1. his argument isn't for or against evolution--it's that he believes in God being the ultimate force behind the whole works, who may or may not have used evolution as his means.

That is a position that I respect and have no quarrel with.

2. His other point is that the early Presidential debates are not debates at all, but rather a silly format of asking questions that really call for a detailed, nuanced answer beginning with "it depends"--but requiring them to be answered with a little more than a simple "yes" or "no". That, and some of the questions asked are just stupid to begin with.

Here I totally agree with him--it's politically-oriented stupid reality TV for America's ignorant masses, although the format might be a necessary evil in the early stages. The funny thing is that I think Huckabee is like to be better suited to that format than a serious debate with someone like Clinton or McCain (or Ron Paul).
