Seriously. All this 0 potential, he's already hit his ceiling, he's not ever going to be an ACC PG shit just came crashing down today.
I'm not saying he's the second coming or anything, but he obviously has the some talent there....his speed, tenacity and quick hands on defense, his shooting.
People forget that he was supposed to be a decent shooter actually. Prally why he was recruited in part. I remember that he won a 3- pt. shooting contest in FLA.
Anyways, just goes to show you that you never know who will and can step up. Especially in light of the developments of McCauley/Costner/Sherrill, and god knows how many other wolfpackers careers. 3/1/2008 6:43:33 PM |

alot of people don't realize that Javi IS just a freshman who is being FORCED to play huge minutes when originally, he prolly wasn't gonna play much at all. Kid shows strength, savvy, moxy, w/e you wanna call it. For a freshman PG, to come back after a game in which he struggled horribly(after finding out about 2 friends from home being killed) and score 18 points against a top 10 team..........i mean come on. Oh yeah....only 1 turnover in 30 min. baller 3/1/2008 9:22:22 PM |

^^javi caught the inbounds pass, turned around and paulus was all up in his face. javi did the requisite hold the ball firmly with both hands and make a high swipe with elbows out to create some space. paulus took a left bow to the face and it ruptured his perpetual black eye and his face started bleeding, much like his vagina

yes he's a freshman yes he had a preseason injury/surgery
but he's been better than decent. he's so important to this team at this point that we clearly suffer when he's off the court. obviously a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that it means johnson's on the court, but nevertheless javi has been a valuable member of the team for most of the ACC season. 3/1/2008 11:16:55 PM |

javi has been horrible all but maybe 3 or 4 games this season. there is no way that qualifies as "decent". decent guys run circles around him. hell, even garbage ass quinton thomas has torn him a new one, twice over. 3/1/2008 11:35:05 PM |

I wouldn't say thomas "tore him a new one". Javi had 9 assists against UNC.
Plus, it doesn't fucking matter how you play when you have the balls to give one to paulus right in the eye. He's the only State player since Hodge that wont put up with bullshit from anyone. I dont care if he sucks (which he doesn't, but you get my point) 3/2/2008 12:01:34 AM |

javi lacks confidence big time but his fired up attitude sells him to me. while it can lead to stupid fouls sometimes, kids got gusto like no one but mccauley has shown consistently this year. you can teach acc play, you cant teach desire.
costner might have more of a natural shot but that kids been stuck in the mcdonalds drive through during 90% of the big games this year. apples to oranges by position, but im talking about production. 3/2/2008 12:41:32 AM |

Once again PG play is not the reason we are losing.....what excuse does Sid have now with Javi balling out like he is? Javi's offense has improved a ton, but his defense still leaves a lot to be desired. He gets steals and lose balls but loses his man too much and gambles and leaves his man open.... 3/2/2008 1:03:43 AM |

Costner got pissed when Paulus took him out at d00k, but he also played like a pussy in the second half....and usually he just folds up and quits playing defense when he's upset. Other guys on the team get mad and take it out on their teammates, Javi takes it out on the other team. I love it.3/2/2008 9:18:05 AM |

Pack, Gonzalez make good showing
RALEIGH - It doesn't happen often in college basketball, but sometimes even the losers win. That was the case on Saturday after Duke's 87-86 victory over N.C. State in the RBC Center.
The Blue Devils (25-3 overall, 12-2 ACC) won the game that kept them solidly in contention for the conference regular-season title and a No. 1 NCAA Tournament seeding in the East.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, in the process, won his 800th game -- a wins total that might one day surpass the 1,000 mark and solidify his standing as the best-ever in his profession. That clearly is where he is heading and has been for the better part of his career.
But there was a winner on the opposite team, too. It was beleaguered Wolfpack point guard Javier Gonzalez, a freshman with such a maligned background that he spent part of Thursday afternoon begging for a reprieve in State coach Sidney Lowe's office.
So bad was Gonzalez's performance in the Wolfpack's 72-62 home loss to Florida State on Wednesday that he felt his role as a regular in the lineup was in jeopardy.
"I wanted Coach to know that I could still help this team," Gonzalez said. "I just went to him, and asked him not to give up on me. I'm capable of being better. I didn't want him to lose confidence in me."
There were extenuating circumstances. Back in Gonzalez's native Puerto Rico, two of his childhood friends were gun-shot victims. Against the Seminoles, Gonzalez's body was in the RBC Center, but his mind was hundreds of miles away. It was a factor Lowe didn't know until the player came in Thursday for the talk.
"He came into my office, and he apologized for the way he had played," Lowe said. "That tells you what kind of a young man he is. ... I just told him it just didn't seem like he was there [against Florida State]. Come to find out [that two of his buddies were shot] back in Puerto Rico, and he had all of that on his mind.
"I just told him that's something that I need to know. I need to know that. I obviously care about him as a basketball player, I told him. But I care about you as person, and what's going on with you as person, so we can be there for you."
Lowe's point was well taken, obviously. Against Duke, Gonzalez responded with the best game of his young career -- 18 points and three assists against one of the most storied defenses in college basketball.
"For me, it's good to play, but we still didn't win," Gonzalez said. "All I wanted today was to just be a part of a big win, and we came close. We just didn't quite do it."
In the long run, however, this loss could help the Wolfpack. At 4-11 in the league and 15-14 overall, it doesn't help the tournament picture. But starting with Gonzalez, much went right for the Pack on Saturday. Ben McCauley played maybe his best game of the season, and first-time starter Tracy Smith came through a new dose of intensity.
That State's season has been a ranking disappointment isn't in doubt. Almost nothing has gone the way the players, coaches and fans expected. Things may not get better, either. But for the rest of this season and into the future, Gonzalez arguably is the team's most important player.
"He's going to be fine. I've said that before -- Javi's going to be fine," Lowe said. "He's a tough young man. I see him growing with every game. This game today, though, he grew quite a bit.

I think duke players hide razor blades in their jerseys and cut themselves. I have never seen a team which bleeds so easily. Paulus has a way of making other point guards play really really well. He pisses people off so much with his bullshit that they just get fired up (see Dukes NCAA loss last year). 3/3/2008 6:39:42 PM |
