CharlieEFH you bash people's opinions in almost every thread in Entertainment and tell everyone that they are flat out wrong but I never see you offer up your own opinion or the correct answer to anything. So what's the right answer?

add: i read your posts from this thread, and enjoyed the comparisons/nods to older films.

"something that resembled Fleming's character "

everyone keeps saying this but it's simply not true

Craig's Bond is reckless and selfish when it comes to how he gets things done. And maybe right now that's the point as they're trying to paint this picture of "Bond's Backstory" (especially since they put the gun barrel scene at the end of the movie).

Fleming's Bond is more mature and self-aware that he's a small fish in a big pond and does his job for the sake of public service. By no means is Fleming's Bond respectful of authority and he doesn't always do things by the rules, but they make sense when he does them and he doesn't just kill people randomly without learning anything. And btw, he hates killing people just to kill people...something Craig's Bond has done at least 10 times over the last 2 movies with no sense of remorse (and i don't mean random bad guys in the middle of a shootout). Fleming's Bond struggles with the good vs evil nature of his job and how the lines get blurry, the movie does a good job of pointing that out but its not from Bond's perspective.

these new movies even lack Fleming's style on the Bond-Leiter relationship, they're more than just colleagues that assume each other to be the "good guys" every once and a while. They chum around and are pretty good friends whenever their paths cross. Its probably not realistic to put in the films, but the older ones made the relationship appear more fun and friendly.

If you want Fleming's Bond, look for a mix of Sean Connery and Tim Dalton. If you think Brosnan got bad writing, Dalton got the most ridiculous of villians. The plots weren't too bad, its just that the villians sucked and were completely laughable. Dalton's "Bond scenes" certainly trump Craig's "Bond scenes"--Craig's Bond just has nice Jason Bourne action scenes that people like these days."

Quote :
"We at AskMen.com made our company outing to see the new Bond last week, and the unanimous consensus was an unfortunate one: Bond is dead. Well, at least Daniel Craig as Bond is dead. Now, this isn’t Craig’s fault; he proved that he was up to the task of becoming the new face for the new franchise in Casino Royale. The new franchise, however, is dead -- murdered by Quantum of Solace’s messy storyline, self-indulgent directing (cutting a foot chase with an opera scene? Blegh), and wavering indecision between Bourne-style rapid-fire action sequences and Brosnan-style over-the-top action sequences. And so, regrettably, the new face must die with it.

A scant two years after the “reboot” of the franchise, the system has crashed. And with Universal Pictures’ recent purchase of the exclusive rights to the Jason Bourne character, MGM suddenly has another spy franchise breathing down their neck. It’s time for a fresh start, and that means it’s time for a fresh face. Here are AskMen.com’s top 5 proposals for Daniel Craig’s replacement as 007. We acknowledge that some of our suggestions are fairly dramatic ones, but dire times call for dire measures.

5. Ewan McGregor
4. Joshua Jackson (lolwut?)
3. Chiwetel Ejiofor
2. Jon Hamm
1. Clive Owen"

I can see both sides of the Bond series needing another reboot, even though Craig has done a good job. I didn't post the reasons behind their top 5, but here is the link to see why they picked these 5.

Ewan McGregor?

Really?

He's a fine actor yes, and I do enjoy most of the films that he has been in but he would make a horrible James Bond. They might as well cast Jake Gyllenhall.

"No.5 - Ewan McGregor
Three years ago this idea would have been laughable, but the stench of Star Wars has lifted and McGregor has since steered clear of subsuming his persona in blockbuster projects (the notable exception being The Island, but you can’t blame a man for letting himself be cast alongside Scarlett Johansson). Instead, he has focused on producing and promoting his Long Way Round and Long Way Down miniseries, two projects that have done wonders for restoring his masculinity and cool-quotient in other men's eyes, and priming him to follow in the steps of countryman Connery and take on the Bond mantle. Yes, the Connery-McGregor-Scotland connection is a bit of a facile one, but it’s just that kind of thing that studio marketing departments will seize on and ram down our throats until we believe it. Two years ago we were all crowing that Bond has “rebooted"; cast McGregor as 007 and two years from now we’ll be agreeing that the franchise has “rerooted.”

about 5 years ago i said Clive Owen would probably make the best Bond out of anyone in the pool. He declined because he didn't want to be defined by the role and lose flexibility in the types of movies he could make. I remember watching Sin City and thinking--Damn he'd be an awesome Bond! But now I'm kinda glad he didn't take the role--not because I dislike the way they've taken the movies, but I don't think he would fit into the way they're trying to make the movies.

I'd like to see them improve the current formula than start all over again though. Craig doesn't need to go, but they need to fix what they've done.

if they revamp the series again they need to do a total overhaul. As in replace Judy Dench with a new M, return Moneypenny and her and James' witty banter, return Q and the creative (yet believable) gadgetry.

I think Clive Owen would be a great Bond.

I just didn't like the new Bond movie

not enough plot, way too many chase scenes (a plane chase scene, really?) and not enough of Bond just being a pimp with quick wit and shit.

Watch it with the mindset that:

(1) It immediately follows Casino Royale (which it does). Re-watch Casino Royale before you go.

(2) There's more to follow, i.e. the story isn't over.

Don't expect a self-contained Bond movie like you've seen in the past.

an excellent film for the thinker.... not so great for the passive watcher.

^^Having a different mindset doesn't fix terrible writing.

^Are you kidding me? You have it backwards. Movie's perfect for the casual moviegoer who doesn't give a fuck about a good story.

Terrible for people that will actually think about what they are seeing and recognize the god-awful writing.

I'm sorry but Judy Dench rocks. And I'm not making any decision on bond till the next one, I think he'll be more bondish in the next film because he is finally BOND... hence the closing gun barrel scene.

you're right, if it did well at the box office then it must mean daniel craig is a good bond and quantum solace must be a good movie.

the fact is not only is casino royal barely a bond movie, this goes even further breaking almost every tradition of a bond movie. casino royal did the worst thing by leaving you feeling sad, thats not a bond movie at all.

so were those two movies good? yes. Should they be bond movies? most definately not.

if they want to start a new franchise go ahead, but why wreck a good franchise unnecessarily.

its like they're just using the name to get popular and steal the thunder.
its like making a teenage mutant ninja turtles 4 but instead of turtles they're hamsters, and instead of fighting crime they bake cookies.

yeah thats what i think of daniel craig movies

I am a big 007 fan. I like the the new ideas and new wave of Bond. To me and to others I hang with who enjoy Bond we all feel that it is a good new wave of Bond movies. I definitely fee it has a different style and edge, but why not change the style and have leeway here and there with different thoughts.

I liked it, but it was a lot like the Bourne movies in that there is an excess of thoughtless killing and slaughter. Bourne had more of a streamlined plot that continued to unravel as the movie progresses, where as Solace pulled the very predictable theme of the "rouge" agent that is loyal to his country but does it his own way. Bourne can pull this off because he does not have any agency ties, but it is hard to believe that Bond can play the rouge agent without being held accountable in the end.

The creepy part of the last scene was how he basically coached someone through an execution. Since when was Bond that ruthless?

I saw it this past Saturday and liked it. The ending was a little blah and it should be interesting to see where they go with it next movie. White is still alive and kicking and we never really got that much information about Quantum...

On a happy note, Olga Kurylenko was so hot in this movie...

It's a different kind of Bond. Yes.. he doesn't have the all-in-one toothbrush with built in cloaking device and laser beam.

Accept the movie for what it is. Get over it.

^ok so you and some others dont care for the traditions of 007
then answer me this, if they decided to make a movie with virtually no resemblance of a bond movie, then why call it a bond movie
why not start a new franchise

its like making a jurrasic park 5, except instead of having dinosaurs it would be about a girls comming of age story

I gotta disagree with this. I don't even remember him killing regular bad guys except for the assets that were sent after him. He beat the shit out of dudes a lot but he hardly killed them. Bond killed a lot of guys that didn't really need to be killed.

My favorite fight scene is the very first in CR. the B&W one in the men's room.

The only thing I didnt like was the opening song. total crap

Loved how you could see bond evolving into the smooth operator that he is supposed to be. Still a little rough around the edges but getting to badass bond.

Will own along with CR

Big Lots is having almost all of the 007 DVDs for $4. I found almost all of Roger Moores, almost all of Pierce Brosnan, a few of Timothy Dalton, and the one George Lazenby film. No Sean Connery in the Big Lots on Western when I checked. And none of the current Daniel Craig ones.

I got them for my brother, upgrading him from some of his VHS

Just. Putting this out there. Heh.

So I bought the first two sets of Bond on Blu-Ray... does anyone know when the others will be coming out? Sometime in '09 I hope.

The first two boxed sets are:
Dr. No
Live and Let Die
Die Another Die
For Your Eyes Only
From Russia With Love -> the best Bond movie of all time IMO
Thunderball
