Oh yeah and the CPU players outright cheat. I was playing on the Moo Moo Meadows yesterday and right when I was about to finish, I shot a red shell behind me. It hit Bowser (I could see him spin out on the radar) and three or so other karts passed him, yet it still reported him as being in second place on the race lineup. And I SWEAR that when I got hit with a POW yesterday, the dude in 2nd place didn't.

^^^you can dodge the POW if you shake the wand or wheel. nothing you can do if you're using a GC controller though. I haven't tried this though, just read it.

According to people at gamefaqs.com, hitting Up on the D-pad of the Gamecube controller works.

they also say you can dodge spiny shells with a mushroom if you time it right.

^^At what point in time do you have to shake it? A coworker of mine said that if you shake it right when it is at the second "hit" (the pow block hits three times before you spin out), you still spin out but don't lose your items.

And I have only been able to get away from the blue shell once... on DK mountain I went through the cannon at the very last second and it stopped tracking me.

Were you guys able to dodge blues on a regular basis in the GameCube version? Over the years i figured out various methods that worked about 30% of the time if in the proper environment (not counting things like the cannon on DK Mtn either.

I'm not sure about the timing, 2nd or 3rd POW I guess. If you do a wheelie on the bike when it happens you recover more quickly. Also if you're in the air it doesn't affect you.

Some of the online players are cheating...

I was in 2nd place the other day and the guy in 1st place was halfway around the track in front of me. i don't know how the heck he got up there so fast.. had to be cheating somehow...

also, if someone chooses rainbow road one more time in vs. i'm going to quit. they choose that course all the time... I think it has some kind of shortcut like in the 64 version.

Man, I don't even want to see what kind of BS the game throws at you on mirror mode. On more than 1 occasion in 150cc, I've been red shelled, blue shelled, POW'd, and Bolted consecutively within 5 seconds

Pressing Up on the GC pad does work for dodging the POW. I just mash repeatedly once the POW block contracts.

So on the topic of the half pipe jumps and curved sides that you can do tricks off of... is it me or do these actually slow you down? I've gone on these (and done a trick to get a boost recovery) and I usually drop a few places to those that just don't even go on them.

^I use those if the boost is needed to clear a jump, or if the flat area is something that slows you down, i.e. mud or snow. Otherwise in most cases they just slow you down. If they're at a turn its better to powerslide through and get a boost. However, if I'm about to be hit with a POW then I go up them b/c if you're in the air you're unaffected. For example the halfpipe section of GCN Waluigi's stadium now has that crap on the sides. I just drive straight through and ignore them.

Its a nice way to get an advantage on the computer characters.

^^they help a lot if you have a mushroom boost. use it to get through the grass or whatever part slows you down before you get to the ramp. then hit the trick in the air, land with yet another boost. profit.

I'm doing pretty well with Rosalina and the Standard Bike L. I would've gotten 1st place on Star Cup if I did royally fucked up Rainbow Road. I'm also having a lot of luck with items in that if I'm coming from behind on the last lap there's a good chance I can come from behind. One race I came in 5th and I was still in first because my closest rival(s) didn't do well either.

A lot of people seem to like Rosalina on GameFAQs and recommend using her with a fast bike and automatic drifting.

I'm not sure if I believe that. Automatic drifting puts you at a HUGE disadvantage b/c you get no speed boosts from drifting. Also, I've read you can only use Rosalina if you have mario galaxy, which I do not.

you can get rosalina without galaxy - google will help on this...it's much easier with galaxy

^^not just that, but you get No speed boost when drifting in automatic. the computer will drift for you in turns, but you get no speed boost.

^what are the Retro cups? There are retro races, but no cups composed entirely of retro races.

Damn online is addictive as hell. My friend and I kept saying "One more race" after every single one (except the last one heh).

The game notified me that someone on my friends list signed on, so after one race we jumped right into another one with a TWWer. I played against someone named "Dustin", which one of you is that? My s/n was "Tony".

If you put it on Automatic then the computer doesn't use mini-turbos.

I was having a hell of a time trying to place in 150cc races on manual. Switched to automatic and I now have Golds on all the courses

but never play Wii games on a HD TV without your component cables. its looks so so shitty with regular A/V's.

^^I played a couple of matches with you just now. If you saw a black Mii named Tony, that was me. I was using Rosalina. And I kicked ass.

I added joe#'s friend code and it immediately showed him as online and allowed me to join in his next race. Pretty good online setup IMO. I can also see a "Nick" and a "CJ", although they never seem to be online when I am.
