i spend 90% of my time focusing on the retardation of Christianity purely because it's the Christians who claim ours is "A Christian Nation" and it's the fundamentalist Christians who are trying to subjugate the mechanisms of our government and institute their peculiar brand of christian theology in what they hope to achieve: an increasingly theocratic system of government.
if there were a faction of Muslims trying to institute Sharia law into American government, sure i'd be all against that. unfortunately for Faux News conspiracists like eyedrb and hooksaw, this doesnt exist. I'm so sorry i dont spend my time worrying about the minutae of islamic superstitions, and what their retarded fundamentalists are doing. because you see, depsite all the fear mongering by the conservatives and their FNC mouthpiece, none of them affect my life on a daily basis.

http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2008/08/29/did-palin-really-fight-the-bridge-to-nowhere.aspx
Quote : | "Did Palin Really Fight The “Bridge To Nowhere”?
Republicans have been heavily touting Sarah Palin's reformist credentials, with her supposed opposition to Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere" as Exhibit A. But how hard did she really fight the project? Not very, it seems. Here's what she told the Anchorage Daily News on October 22, 2006, during the race for the governor's seat (via Nexis):
5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?
Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.
So she was very much for the bridge and insisted that Alaska had to act quickly—the party of Ted Stevens and Don Young might soon lose its majority, after all. By that point, the project was endangered for reasons that had nothing to do with Palin—the bridge had become a national laughingstock, Congress had stripped away the offending earmark, shifting the money back to the state's general fund, and future federal support seemed unlikely. True, after Palin was sworn into office that fall, her first budget didn't allocate any money for the bridge. But when the Daily News asked on December 16, 2006, if she now opposed the project, Palin demurred and said she was just trying to figure out where the bridge fit on the state's list of transportation priorities, given the lack of support from Congress. Finally, on September 19, 2007, she decided to redirect funds away from the project altogether with this sorry-sounding statement:
"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer," said Governor Palin. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island," Governor Palin added. "Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened."
Maybe I've missed something, but it sure looks like she was fine with the bridge in principle, never had a problem with the earmarks, bristled at all the mockery, and only gave up on the project when it was clear that federal support wasn't forthcoming. Now, Charles Homans, who knows Alaska well, says Palin's anti-corruption instincts are fairly solid (she sold off the gubenatorial jet upon taking office, for one), and a casual Nexis search suggests that she's fiscally conservative (insofar as that term makes sense in a quasi-socialist state like Alaska), but this hardly looks like the "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" moment everyone's making it out to be.
P.S. Here's a piece that Palin's special counsel, John Katz, wrote in March of this year for the Juneau Empire, assuring the Alaskan public that Palin was still very much in favor of earmarks, but sadly needed to scale back her requests somewhat (to "only" 31 earmarks this year—down from 54 last year) in response to "unwanted attention" from Congress and the press.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/30/palin-booed-for-mentioning-hillary-clinton/
Quote : | "Palin booed for mentioning Hillary Clinton
WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (CNN) – This might not be the best way to reach out to those disillusioned Hillary Clinton supporters.
In just her second appearance on the campaign trail with John McCain, newly-minted GOP running mate Sarah Palin was showered with boos on Saturday for attempting to praise Clinton’s trail-blazing bid to become the first female president.
As she did at in her debut speech in Ohio yesterday, Palin appealed to the women in the crowd here in Pennsylvania with a political shout-out to Geraldine Ferraro, who preceded Palin as the first women to be tapped as a vice presidential candidate.
But in contrast with the mild reception that greeted her comments at the Ohio event, when Palin praised Clinton here for showing “determination and grace in her presidential campaign,” the Alaska governor was met with a noisy mix of boos, groans and grumbles around the minor league ballpark where the “Road to the Convention Rally” was held.
Palin quickly recovered, promising the audience that female candidates weren’t yet finished, and that she and McCain were on their way to victory in November." |
So is this republicans booing Hillary b/c republicans don't like Hillary thus making sure Hillary supporters don't feel welcome in that party, or is it democrats who don't like someone whose platform is the opposite of Hillary's trying to take over her supporters?
I'm more inclined to think its republican's saying Hillary supporters aren't welcome in their party, since it was a Road to the Convention Rally, but either way this looks bad for them absorbing Hillary supporters.

Palin] has -- bachelors in Journalism from U of Idaho --1 year experience as a sports journalist --4 years experience on city council of Wasilla, AK (pop 6000) --6 years experience as mayor of Wasilla, AK. the highlight of her tenure there was a recall effort and civil case for the politically motivated firing of the police chief and library director. -- less than 1 year exp as "ethics commissioner" of Alaska Oil and Gas, where she *resigned in protest* due to "unethical behavior of her Republican colleagues". -- 2 years political experience as governor of least-populated state in the union.
Obama has -- bachelors in Political Science from Columbia -- 4 years experience as Director of a Chicago community organization -- Juris Doctor from Harvard -- President of the Harvard Law Review, -- 6 years experience as Civil Rights Attorney -- 2 years experience as Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law, University of Chicago School of Law -- 8 years political experience as State Senator from Chicago -- 4 years political experience as U.S. Senator from Illinois -- US Senate Committee for Foreign Relations -- US Senate Committee for Environment and Public Works -- US Senate Committee for Veterans' Affairs -- US Senate Committee for Health, Education, Labor and Pensions -- US Senate Committee for Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs

Just last year she said: Palin: "I haven't thought much about Iraq"
recently she said: Palin: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"
She wasn't picked based on her experience being able to replace McCain if he dies, she was picked in a failed attempt to bring of Hillary supporters. But when she gets boo's when she mention's Hillary at her speeches, the republican's aren't going to welcome the Hillary supporters into their party (not that they'd want to support someone so politically opposed to what Hillary stood for anyways). 8/31/2008 1:29:01 PM |

What governor is thinking about Iraq anyway? State governments aren't concerned with National Security, that's the job of the federal government. If anything, she's been more worried about the Russians and Canada which may or may not be more scary than Iraq.

Get your head out of gallup's silly tracking poll for a second...it's worthless. Even that's got Obama up 6 points currently today....not that it matters because it's a silly poll. The only dead heat exists in the mind of the GOP and in the media who want to sell a story. I'm not saying it's a landslide but Obama is favored there is no doubt about it.
--Go state by state and Obama wins 300 EV+ right now with aggregate polling in the states (which is what really matters). --Go to intrade and he's trading at 60% to McCain's 40%..remember that's real people's money man, they don't play around. -Compare field offices and Obama's operation completely humbles McCain's at about 4:1 campaign offices in battleground states meaning large turnout numbers --Obama now has more cash on hand for the general election than McCain.
The only pivot points now are the VP and Presidential debates. Most people that comprise this data above have made up their mind and now it's the indies that haven't made a decision and the turnout. Turnout favors Obama and right now he also leads in indies.
McCain picked Palin out of desperation because he knows he has to get his own base energized and turnout high....and he also knows there's no way to catch up unless he kicks Obama's ass backwards in the debates OR tries to change the game (which is where Palin supposedly comes in). However, he isn't getting Hillary's voters save the few PUMAS with this pick. Palin's a novel choice but she's not a game changer...so it all comes down to why this thing is 60/40 right now and that virtually hasn't changed since the very beginning.

Joe, Palin has spent 2 years as governor of a state. (executive position) SHe is known as a reformer and fought against her own party, when it was thought to be corrupt. She has lowered taxes in alaska AND CUT SPENDING. Seriously. She served (and actually showed up) as Ethics Supervisor in her state. She also is in direct control of the Alaska national guard.
Obama, is a junior senator. Who served ONE year before running for president. He has never even managed a payroll, while Palin created a surplus. Major legislative accomplishments.... include.... I think he started a website to track spending.
I hope most voters ARE like me joe, and actually look for actions not just words. It would be sad to think that most voters think like you joe, and believe that applying for a position somehow gives you experience for that position.
Oh, and another thing. THe fact that you are debating YOUR presidential candidates "experience" to the republicans VICE presidential candidate's experience is telling and laughable.

Alaska runs itself. They have billions in annual surplus, which Palin made by increasing taxes on oil revenue. In fact, they will pay each of their citizens $3200 this year simply to live there.
They have no need to balance a budget. The entire state has the population Charlotte, NC and even Marion Berry has much more "experience" than Sarah Palin. Anyone can run a sparsely populated state with no problems, even if just for 20 months.

"Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who has come under fire about his readiness to be commander-in-chief, missed two of three Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Afghanistan since joining the panel.
Obama has said the U.S. should have stayed focused on fighting al Qaeda in Afghanistan while repeatedly criticizing his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), and presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) for their votes in favor of a resolution backing the Iraq war.
But since joining Foreign Relations, Obama has missed three meetings on a "new strategy" in Afghanistan, a country he has never visited.
Obama was absent from a January 31 meeting this year, and also was not present for a hearing on Sept. 21, 2006. He did attend a March 8, 2007 hearing on a new Afghanistan strategy.
On Feb. 15, 2007, Obama also missed a committee hearing on U.S. ambassadors to Iraq and Afghanistan."

Obama has been one voice out of 100 as a Senator. At least Palin has executive experience. Mayor of a city vs. state legislature is a wash, but it seems that state governors have had a lot more success nationally than senators.
I will say this, the pick is surprising, and not in a good way. It makes me wonder a few things - did nobody else want to run with McCain, is there a large enough portion of Hillaryites that would vote for a ticket b/c there's a woman on the ballot, or is McCain trying to play follow the leader here with a wildcard pick? 8/31/2008 7:02:17 PM |

^^ Obama's voice as a senator affects MANY more people than Palin's as a governor.
In any case, Palin had MUCH less "executive experience" than the incumbent governor she beat, but according to McCain and crew, she still turned out to be a fine governor. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can look at Obama as the national version of Palin.
