Dust under the screen of a $1600 laptop is absurd.

I had this same problem with my iPhone and I didn't get any trouble....but I'm sure ive been blacklisted in the computer as a problem customer by this point lol.....

I just have bad luck

Oh yeah just noticed today I have a dead pixel about 1/2" up from the bottom of my new Macbook, right in the middle of the screen. Not noticeable most of the time but now that I've seen it it bugs me.

I've never had any trouble on any Apple product in the last 10 years, except for my iPhone (original), which was replaced no questions asked with a new one, even though it had obviously been dropped. My 3g and all other Apple hardware has been 100% problem free.

I take that back, my mic stopped working on my iBook 4 years ago after I'd dropped it hard enough to break the enclosure/hinge, but I think I just pinched the wire when I was replacing the case.

if you google bent macbook pro youll come across a notquiteleet.com site postings, mybiggestcomplain, ripoffreport, and some google/youtube/yahoo videos of the shit i had to go through for them to completely replace my laptop due to the bent display after I paid to have the display replaced on my old one. They ended up giving me a new one and I have a ton of shit due this week. Maybe Ill call them and go ahead and have them order a display for me so it can be done in one day? yes, no?

the only issues i've had with purchasing a MBP/PowerBook G4 (out of 3 i've owned) is that the first MBP I owned, the power adapter kept on catching on fire but apple replaced them each time for free.

my mom got a mbp a year ago and she still can't figure it out to where it's easier than her pc for photography. It's got a nice place in her closet though. Atleast I can get her to use it on trips.

sounds like she hasn't tried to learn a new OS. If you're used to windows then yeah, working on a Mac will take some effort to break windows habits. But once you're on board its leaps and bounds better for photo editing.

I don't actively engage in trying to get people to switch, because I don't want to be the one on the hook to 1) support every problem they run into, and 2) take the blame if they intimately don't like it. Having said that, of the 3-4 people who I have directly or indirectly had a part in switching, mostly by answering their questions honestly, but not actively evangelizing Mac or trying to hide its flaws, are happy with their decision.

I have to be curious, though, what your mom finds easier about using a PC to manage and edit her photos than Mac. I mean, I like Picasa and other PC applications just fine, but I really can't think of any PC solution that's easier than iPhoto....

yeah, other than ^ - people will continue to use "bad" solutions on the PC just because they are familiar with them instead of learning a new, and probably or at least potentially better way on the Mac

^Adobe bridge is 10,000 times better than iPhoto for people who DO things with images.

(It's also one of my favorite things about Adobe products on the Mac, because it's FAST and stable, two things the PC version aren't)

Photoshop on the other hand, it's just awkward on the Mac. I don't really know how to explain it, but I'm a realistic 20-25% faster on the PC with Photoshop and Illustrator. I think it's the key mappings that throw me off.

On a side note, do yall think it's worth it for me to sell my Mac Mini for a new MacBook? I don't think I can justify the Pro, but the regular one seems like a worthwhile step-up. Thoughts? (Looking your way on this agentlion )

i agree, the MB looks sweet..... my wife has a 1st gen Intel MacBook, and I'll probably be looking to upgrade her early next year. I just got a MBP in February, so I certainly can't justify anything for myself for a while....

ah, well, considering the Mini hasn't been updated at all since late Summer 2007, and the new MB and MBPs have high-performance processors, graphics, and DDR3 memory, I'd say hell fucking yeah, a MB or MBP would be a huge advantage of any of the Minis!

Got a 13" macbook the other day ... i am not exactly a mac fan, but I do like this box alot.

The touchpad is a bit different, but once you set the setting like you want them, its actually a pretty slick touchpad... beats having touchpad/ballthingy/right/left buttons that are always getting in the way. You can do anything you need to do on the touchpad.

Just wish it had firewire so that I could hook up my video camera, and the old mini dvi instead of the new "mini display port"

i just bought two of the mac book pros (with the upgraded hdd, memory and video).

for those with the new style of mb/mbp, do you have any kind of screen protector to put between the keyboard and display when closing the lid?

i ask because with the old powerbook i had, the apple clerk recommended that i put something over the keyboard before i shut the lid to keep the oils from my fingers from transferring to the screen (the keys actually touch the display when closed)

^ Yes, Marware makes a pad that you stick to the area where your wrists rest. It also comes with a cloth to put on the keyboard to keep the keyboard impression from indenting in the screen.

I've got a 17" powerbook G4, that will soon be replaced by a 17" macbook pro.

until apple joins the 21st century and offers dual external monitor support, i need the screen space at work. I don't travel at all for work, so the size is not a problem.

Now thats funny, surprised that didn't make the news....assuming you weren't the only person with that problem. I would have thought that would be a huge liability for apple, burning someone's home down.

^^ two 22" to 24" is plenty.

ideally, i'd like to have a 15" that i can close the lid on and have two larger external screens... like i did with my stinkpad.

Right now i use the 17" screen and one external 22" screen.

it's ok, but not ideal.

i'm sure a lot of people will really bitch about the non-removable battery on the 17" MBP, but I bet the actual number of people who carry additional batteries is very, very small. Looks like they've made up for that, though, with the new battery designs. Hope it works out in the real world.

yeah, my only concern with the non removable battery is that if it hangs and the power button is unresponsive, then what the hell do you do? wait until the battery drains out?

granted, in my experience it's been much rarer to have it happen on a mac laptop than my PC laptops, but still, it *does* happen once in a while.

i think the iPhoto and iMovie '09 changes look outstanding. I love all the Maps integration, and the face recognition and facebook integration in iPhoto.
iMovie '09 looks to be a huge step up from '08, which was in many ways a step back from '06. Now '09 might be a full replacement for '06, even if some of the advanced video editing features (i.e. rarely used features) still aren't available.

btw, the Mac Box Set that includes iLife 09, iWork 09 and OS X 10.5 for $169 is a really good deal. I wonder how much MS would charge for a package like that.....

I wish they would sell just iLife and iWork, though, for $120-130 since most geeks have already upgraded to 10.5.

SSD? don't bother.
Way too expensive, and the early benchmarks showed that it had minimal impact on battery and the write/read performance wasn't that great either
