Hopefully McCain will protect me from the turrrrists too! and Palin wants to safeguard my childrens education from wacko liberal evolution talk.
Dr. B what does McCain intend to cut from spending in order to accomedate less taxes. We all know "Lower TAxes" is everyones favorite line to use in campaign speeches. I think this i just lip service. What candidate would actually claim to "raise taxes". Yet unless the treasury intends to print more magic money I do not see how McCain is going to do this.

From the daily show thread
Quote : | "Some economists[15] trace the origin of modern progressive taxation to Adam Smith, who wrote in The Wealth of Nations:
The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. A tax upon house-rents, therefore, would in general fall heaviest upon the rich; and in this sort of inequality there would not, perhaps, be anything very unreasonable. It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion." |

Hur, Im not big fan on mccain but he is at least proposing a lot less spending than obama.
And not letting the bush tax cuts expire, credits towards healthcare, and cutting coorporate tax rates, are all better plans plans than what ive heard from obama. McCain has also called for a spending freeze and for CUTS in spending.. across the board. You might have heard the hatchet vs scalpel line before.
Moron, she certainly didnt seem impressed with his answer. I agree with the chick. Now how did she get to 60%, I dunno. I guess she took the highest bracket, 35% added payroll 15%(roughly), and a 6-8% state income tax... I guess she threw in property and sales to get the rest? I dunno, but its entirely too much to take anywhere near 30% just for showing up to work, imo. 10/22/2008 4:59:10 PM |

Quote : | "President Bush's tax cuts since 2001 have shifted more of the tax burden from the nation's rich to middle-class families, according to a study released Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. " |
...
Quote : | "People in the top 20 percent of incomes, averaging $182,700 a year, saw their share of federal taxes decline from 65.3 percent of total payments in 2001 to 63.5 percent this year, according to the study by congressional budget analysts.
In contrast, middle-class taxpayers — with incomes ranging from $51,500 to $75,600 — bear a greater tax burden. Those making an average of $75,600 had the biggest jump in their share of taxes, from 18.5 percent of all payments in 2001 to 19.5 percent this year. " |

AHEM. Reading is fundamental.
Quote : | "Q: If either one of you become president, and let the Bush tax cuts lapse, there will be effectively tax increases on millions of Americans.
OBAMA: On wealthy Americans.
CLINTON: That's right.
OBAMA: I'm not bashful about it.
CLINTON: Absolutely
OBAMA: I suspect a lot of this crowd--it looks like a pretty well-dressed crowd--potentially will pay a little bit more. I will pay a little bit more. But that investment will pay huge dividends over the long term, and the place where it will pay the biggest dividends is in Medicare and Medicaid. Because if we can get a healthier population, that is the only way over the long term that we can actually control that spending that is going to break the federal budget.
CLINTON: It's just really important to underscore here that we will go back to the tax rates we had before George Bush became president. And my memory is, people did really well during that time period. And they will keep doing really well. " |

So, what I posted combined with his tax plan (assuming he was able to get the whole thing working, which of course would never happen, since a President's tax plan never actually gets put into place) WOULD in fact bring a tax cut for the middle class and an increase in taxes for the rich.
Now, whether any candidate can fulfill his promise is another question, but it's also not what we're discussing.

heh, Sarah Palin, one of America's biggest dumbshits, also one of the loudest voices on Obama being a socialist...why does anyone listen to her? She has proven herself to be one of the stupidest Americans that we can be so proud as to claim as one of our own.
So, "socialism" is bad, but spending gobs of taxpayer dollars in a stupid, unjustified war in Iraq and spending a ridiculous amount of money(that our generations will be paying back) to bailout these goddamned CEOs and banks is good. I know I was happy to hear that after the bailout, the AIG execs spent $400,000 taxpayer dollars on a nice vacation for themselves, I'm sure they've been through a lot of stress and that must have really helped them get through this. Meanwhile the poor suckers on mainst. are still getting kicked out of their homes. We have a shitty healthcare plan, and infrastructure is going to shit, or it's already there. But no, socialism is 100% bad, bad, bad.
It baffles me that people are so against "socialism", yet want to vote for someone who will take away other rights in other areas of life(COUGH abortion, gay marriage, etc.). Or the republicans are against "socialism" and then handout tax cuts to their rich friends. So, you don't want your gov't to regulate stuff like healthcare but you're happy to hand over your money to go to ridiculous other bullshit.
I want to laugh, I want to cry, I don't know anymore. But my main objection is why do we listen to these people who have proven themselves time and time again so stupid that it is hard to believe that they are able to function in daily life, of course Bush did choke on that pretzel, close call there, I'm surprised stuff like that doesn't happen more often. 10/22/2008 8:57:45 PM |

Privatize the profits, socialize the losses bro. It is standard GOP policy. Don't tell our Blue Collar base or they will be upset.
Much like how the city of Charlotte used tax payer dollars to build the BobCat stadium so that Bob Johnson can makes $texas. Hell you even have to pay to park at the parking deck even when games are not going on.

Thats the funny thing about statistics, you can manipulate them to say whatever you want. Funny how they compare now to 2001, the last year of an unprecedented economic boom in which the ultra-wealthy were earning huge sums of money. Of course they were shouldering a larger portion of the tax burden then, they were earning more.10/23/2008 12:30:52 AM |

Maybe, maybe not. The problem with raising taxes on profits and capital gains is that historically, they have often resulted in LESS revenue due to how our tax code works. Companies can defer profits by reinvesting or giving out bonuses, and people can defer capital gains for a few years if they think the capital gains tax rate will go down. Also, in a recession, revenues always go down, and the biggest drop is from the wealthy because their income is much more volatile. 10/23/2008 1:04:46 AM |

Don't get me wrong - I'm not a big fan of McCain. He's got plenty of toxic ideas himself.
Barack Obama, though, is an unashamed socialist who honestly believes in this "share the wealth" entitlement mentality, and I can, under absolutely no circumstances, support that.
There are other equally inflammatory things that he has said that eliminate him from my consideration, but the wealth redistribution and entitlement mentality are pretty big killers. The only thing about him that's more important, in my eyes, is his rabidly anti-gun voting record. 10/23/2008 11:19:29 AM |
