Well put.

I agree completely, except for inter-species marriage.
I don't care one way or the other, but if animals are going to get legal rights, it is only right to give them all rights, not just marriage and divorce rights.

There are a couple of things wrong with this line of thinking...

First, obviously animals can't give consent and don't really have the intelligence to understand what marriage is, that's just plainly ridiculous.

People who like incest are well understood to have psychological disorders under current prevailing theories as well as DSM IV.

I don't know what research is out there on the other 2, but other cultures and past cultures have practiced both of those. If they can be shown to not have psychological effects, then there's no reason they shouldn't be allowed, although I don't ever see mainstream society coming to embrace polygamy et al like it has been doing for gays.

Same used to be true for people who like homosexual encounters. Under the hierarchical family structure, incest creates countless problems, sure. Under a different social arrangement, however, I see no good reason for a taboo against sex acts between related people.

First-cousin marriage has a long history as well.

^ none of that changes anything I said.

Plus, there are clear practical reasons already to oppose incest.

Its easy. I don't care if gays get married but im not going to go out of my way to vote to keep it. People who don't want gays getting married are going to go vote. The only people on the other side that care enough are gays and their best friends. Thus it passes even though most people aren't against gay marriage.

To be clear, I used two terms, "civil unions/gay marriage," to cover everything. No semantic games are being played. If the law opts to use the term "civil union" to describe the joining of all couples, then that's the word we're settled on. If they pick "marriage," then we're going with that for all couples. No room for distinction by using two different words for gays and straights.

You all can still discuss policy and politics and whatnot. But go ahead and put your name on the list, too!!!

Democratic processes have enslaved people before. This is why the concept of rights are important; there are some things the majority shouldn't be able to will.

As long as marriage exists in its current form, I think it should be accessible to same sex couples. But, for the record, I think the government should have nothing to do with it. Not only that, but I'd be for dismantling the institution of marriage altogether. It's not necessary. It's not sacred. A lifelong commitment can be made without the government/clergy sanctioning it.

Granted I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd be willing to bet ^ is the most logical thing said in it.

again, personally i think they should be able to do marry whoever the hell they want, but it doesn't change the fact that the law reads the same for everyone....jim crow, women's sufferage, slavery etc... are not the same.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Monday stayed Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling in the high-profile constitutional challenge to California's same-sex marriage ban. The appeals court agreed to hear in early December a bid by same-sex marriage opponents to appeal the case in the place of Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown, who have declined to file an appeal. But the court hinted in its order that it was skeptical of the opponents' standing to appeal the case."

I'm 100% for legal same sex marriage.

I'm 100% opposed to the idea of marriage though, it's a bad contract if you're a well to do guy.
