well you pretty much answered your own question for MD. all of the fans who yell it at any of their games are obviously what's left of us orioles fans. the same thing happens at other sporting events in the DC area. people yell "O" at capitals and wizards games as well, or at least i know they used to. i'm not sure if it still happens as much these days. i had a friend who did an internship with the nationals this summer, and he said there were orioles fans at every home game who would yell "O." there were a lot of us this summer yelling it there when the o's played the nats in DC. i guess it's kind of obnoxious that it happens anywhere outside camden yards, but i love it. also, this same conversation in this thread has happened on some orioles message boards about the "O" being disrespectful or whatever. i think "red" and "O" are both great. i put my hand over my heart to show allegiance to my country. i yell the other stuff to show allegiance to my teams. i don't care what other people think.
i have no idea why they yell "O" at duke games.1/21/2009 11:53:59 AM |

It was funny as hell at the game last night though during the anthem.
When the fans behind the bench yelled "RED", the Duke fans were looking around like "what in the hell was that"
I still hate it...but that was entertaining. 1/21/2009 12:34:33 PM |

I love the "Red" part of the Anthem, and enjoy the "Home of the Wolfpack" part at home games. I don't think it is good idea for road games, but it does not bother me.
I think it is a fun tradition, and not a effort to disrespect the military or country. I have other beliefs and thoughts, about the national anthem, but I don't bring it to sporting events.
I do appreciate our military efforts and service men/women.
With that said...keep the tradition going. Its been going on since I visited in mid 90's and attended late 90's early 00's.

I'm alright with emphasizing it, but changing the words is where it borders on disrespect
I know it's going to keep happening and I don't really care if people do it, I just don't1/23/2009 5:37:22 PM |

I went to the Duke game last week and asked the guys next to me about the "O". They said it had no significance.
My friend an I went to the UNC football game this year and yelled "RED" and "WOLFPACK" as loud as we could (we were in the pussy blue section). Yelling "wolfpack" just got them pumped up, but when we yelled "red", we had about 10 people in that section turn around and yell at us, with one of them yelling, "Shut the fuck up!" during the middle of the song...< Talk about being classy... 1/25/2009 11:42:09 AM |

arbitrary patriotism is more fucking retarded than modifying a song to cheer on your college team. 1/22/2014 9:02:01 AM |

The anthem is the solemn time before the game when you're supposed to slowly reach over and graze your friend's ass until they laugh.
This goes for prayers, as well, unless you're seated. Then, you just place your hand firmly on their leg. Also, you should definitely keep your eyes open and look around to make faces at people. 1/22/2014 1:12:20 PM |

YOU PEOPLE have no clue what you're talking about if you think NC State is somehow unique, disrespectful, or both. You need to see what the Blackhawks do. It's 100x more patriotic than a bunch of college students playing grabass during the anthem.

my .02
1. When I was at state, I yelled "red" and "wolfpack"
2. Now that I am in the military, I don't do that anymore.
3. I do not get offended, but I also know the school and traditions. And I'm sure some small part of my job is to make sure we all don't get killed for not standing perfectly at attention while kim jung un's portrait is raised above the crowd. I like the freedom to have a little fun, "red" and "wolfpack" are not disrespectful, then anthem is still honored, and really not an issue. It is way worse to keep walking and/or talk during the anthem than paying respect for 98% of the anthem.
4. If I knew nothing of the school, I would not be offended for yelling one word or changing "home of the ____" because its common in many sports venues.
5. Yelling it at unc will be automatic trouble, because those bastards need anything they can to divert attention away from the sinking ship. Also, how dare they act "patriotic" and correct anyone about the anthem, they waste more tax payer money on bullshit degrees and spend more time writing about problems, bitching and complaining, instead of fixing problems. Who can support that crap hole of an institution where you act elite, but you really don't have a reason to be. The tarholes and their fans remind me of colonial england, false entitlement by the shitbag elite and supported by the trash of Europe screaming "god save the queen" as they handed over more and more to the shitbag elite... halleluiah, holy shit, where's the Tylenol.

Who gives a shit?
It's a sporting event. I go to watch one team score more points than another. I don't go to prove to the world how goddamn American I am.
The entire exercise of tying sporting events with the military and demanding empty gestures of patriotism makes me want to jerk off to the first amendment, anyway.

it's not the singing of the anthem i'm referring to, but people putting a rendition of an old drinking song on such a pedestal that adding 'red' and 'home of the wolfpack' breaks some sacred covenant.1/23/2014 11:41:43 PM |

(where Capitals fans often emphasize the "red" - the team's main color - of "rockets' red glare") as well - lacking their own MLB franchise, the Orioles were very much a "home" team in the nation's capital - but has become rare since the arrival of the Nationals in 2005.[citation needed] At sporting events in Dallas-Fort Worth, the lines "Whose broad stripes and bright stars" and "O say does that star" are followed by the crowd shouting "Stars!" in homage to the Dallas Stars.[citation needed] However, at San Jose Sharks home games versus the Dallas Stars, fans are known to boo at the two occurrences of the word "star" in the song.[19][better source needed] In Raleigh, North Carolina at Carolina Hurricanes games, the crowd often emphasizes the word "red" as well. At sporting events in Houston, the first three words of the line "And the rockets' red glare" are followed by the crowd shouting "Rockets" in homage to the Houston Rockets.[citation needed] At sporting events in Atlanta, the final word is pluralized in homage to the Atlanta Braves. Also, UCF Knights fans yell "Knights" when the line "Gave proof through the night..." is sung.[citation needed] Fans at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City yell "home of the CHIEFS" in place of the anthem's final line.[citation needed] In addition,at University of Oklahoma football games,Sooner fans yell "home of the Sooners" in place of the anthem's final line.[20] At University of Virginia football games, Cavalier fans emphasize the word "Whose" in reference to an unofficial nickname for UVa sports teams, the Wahoos, or "Hoos" for short.[citation needed] At University of Michigan football games, students and fans salute at the words "So proudly we hail" referencing the official Michigan fight song, The Victors, which features a call to "Hail" to the university all throughout the song" |
