Went to OI on Tuesday after work with plans to fish Wed and Tuesday.
Wed - After some tense moments running through the crack we get to the bar and its standing straight up. 8+ with about 4 secs in between outgoing tide on a NE wind makes the inlet sporty. We plow through and its like a bathtub on the other side.
We fished with the fleet and had a puppy YFT hit the flat line right off the bat but we threw him back. No more knockdowns the rest of the day except for a gaffer we hooked up late. We ended up trolling north to no avail.
Thursday - No inlet problems and it was flat calm so we ran 40 miles in about an hour and half. I looked at the Sat shots and it looked like there was a hard break farther south than yesterday. We head that way and sure enough there is a temp break with grass on it. We fished it all day either trolling or bailing and ended up with 25 Mahi's. Ran back in an hour and I was able to sleep the whole time
In other news... I can't make the bahamas trip next week They changed the law June 1 about entering the country. (before June 1, if entering by boat you could enter with a drivers license, now its passport only and I can't/couldn't get it turned around in time.)

back from a week in belhaven.....wore out pretty much everything- flounder, red drum, specks, striper....and lots of skates lol. went offshore out of morehead one day and pulled in several mahi. for a first time saltwater trip, i doubt it couldve gone any better. 6/28/2009 3:27:09 PM |

Second trip out this year, and it was very similar to the first. Had a first-timer onboard so we let him reel in most of the fish.
Headed out of Masonboro yesterday morning and fished 30 miles offshore until about 1 PM. Smooth ride out and even smoother in.
3 mahi, 4 kings, 1 cuda, and we dropped down on bottom for a bit and I broke my trevala (indestructible?) rod on something big down there, and no, it wasn't hung...
Picture up in the gallery...can't link it now for some reason...bah.

the weatherman missed it bad friday. it was windy as hell. we couldn't get out in the river due to 2' swells. ended up staying in the creek and fishing from 5:30 am to 11 am.
few small trout. few small flounder. i caught a 22" puppy drum that was delicious in a stew today at granny's. that joker was a fun fight on my little cabo. 7/5/2009 10:33:39 PM |

Goin to morehead this weekend....No boat, so i'm gonna try fishing creeks. I'm somewhat of a saltwater n00b, but from what I've read, I'll be mainly trying to catch spec trout, flounder and drum....
What are some good areas to fish around there this time of year? Also, am I best to go with live bait, or jigs/spoons/crankbaits? 7/7/2009 2:56:03 PM |

i have no idea where you're talking about, but it's most likely private property
you could try by the beaufort drawbridge or maybe on the radio island side of the morehead city bridge (across from the phosphate plant), but those places kinda blow.
if i wasn't busy this weekend, i'd haul a boat down there and take you for a small fee. 7/7/2009 3:08:58 PM |

There are a couple of access points that aren't private....and we have a friend that lives in a houseboat docked at one of the marinas, not sure if they frown on fishing at the docks tho (or if it's even worth fishing there).
Maybe I'll get lucky. 7/7/2009 3:12:52 PM |

if there are docks nearby, go find some fiddler crabs, small urchins, or sand fleas from the beach. fish them w/ a wire leader right against the dock pilings. sheephead hang out there. i've caught a bunch right up in taylor's creek (the beaufort waterfront). folks tend to get pissed if you're tying your boat up to their empty dock and fishing, though. 7/7/2009 3:16:13 PM |

i caught a bunch of 30"+ blues light lining on some really light spinning tackle to kill time while we were cobia fishing in the hook once. that was a blast. 7/7/2009 3:45:30 PM |

Out at the Radio Island Jetty. We drifted some lines back off the stern and then dropped some on the bottom. Must have pulled up an easy 2 dozen seabass and a few good sized doormats.
On a related note, I went spearfishing yesterday at the Cape. Couldn't see a damn thing. Did manage to spear a decent sized triggerfish though 7/9/2009 12:38:15 PM |

I got really lucky considering I mostly fish surf. I jerked my line up to the surface to check my bait, saw that it was empty and started reeling it in (not that fast) and I jigged it right on its belly. 7/9/2009 12:46:23 PM |

Yeah it was definitely a king, the dorsal was pretty narrow and pointy. I caught it like dead center of the belly both radially and axially if that makes any sense. It's almost like a mermaid put it on my line for shits and giggles. 7/9/2009 12:49:07 PM |

nah, I don't know anything about fishing out there (although I have heard it can be good earlier and later in the year because of the nuclear plant warming it up)
what is the tournament for?

first time out in harris yesterday for that bass tournament...
it was a really nice day. my cousin and I caught 7 bass and 1 bowfish
unfortunately only 2 of the bass were "keepers" for the tournament. the other 5 were nice bass but they were "slots" so we had to throw them back. I have a picture of the 19" I caught (slot), but waiting on my cousin to send it to me. 7/12/2009 9:11:13 AM |

I have a Berkeley fly rod I'll let go for $cheap if anyone wants to give fly fishing a try. I bought it used and have never even put a reel on it myself, but it's in really good condition and looks pretty much new. $5 or some cheap liquor and it's yours just to get it out of my way. 7/13/2009 2:48:17 PM |

I don't know...I don't have it here in Raleigh. I'll bring it back this weekend. It's pretty short for a fly rod. Separates into 2 pieces, has a nice cork handle.

i want a very light cheap one to put one of those weird ultralight reels on for crappie fishing
it's like a push-button spincast reel, but it goes under the rod. example:

I think it would actually be perfect for that, but I'll let you decide. It's short for a fly rod, but long for a normal caster. I'll bring it back to Raleigh with me this weekend.
