i'm thinking the mandarin will be the big bad in Iron Man 3
their main issue with not using him in the first one was wanting to keep it somewhat believable and not have magic come out of nowhere
since dude's gonna team up with the fucking god of thunder before IM3 that wall's already been breached so they have no reason not to
i mean what else would they do? Stane's son? AIM/MODOK?
I know they aren't going to do another random dude in a big robot suit. 5/11/2010 11:39:21 AM |

Favreau has hinted a few times about being interested in having the Mandarin in the third one. I honestly expected there to be a much greater reference to him in this movie. The premise of the difference between technology and magic could be interesting, but could easily be disastrous if presented unconvincingly. 5/11/2010 6:52:45 PM |

Ok, no one else has brought it up, but I feel it needs to be said. . .
Did NO ONE else fucking hate the Hammer guy? I mean, not 'hate' in the way that you are supposed to dislike the bad guy, but 'hate' in the sense that he was every douchebag cliche mixed into one fucking intolerable character. And to top it all off, all the people in power allied right behind him and always took his side over Stark despite the fact that we was trash.

yeah i didn't really care for him either, but then again i didn't really read a lot of iron man so i don't know how accurate the portrayal was. he was more nerdy than diabolical, but i don't know if that was by design or not 5/11/2010 7:27:45 PM |

I didn't care for the Hammer guy either; I thought he was supposed to be a little douchey, but it wasn't enjoyable.
Oh yeah, the part where the bad guy basically shuts down everything technology-wise reminds me of this:

This movie lacks almost every single element of good drama.
That said, I still think it's a fine movie. Just that it's a movie that exists almost entirely and completely on the sheer force of personality of the people that are in it. 5/12/2010 11:22:27 AM |

I liked the scene at the Senate where Stark ssh'd into the presentation.
I felt the first act of this movie did really well, with the exception of the reintroduction of Roadie Rhodes. To me, the cinematography made it seem like Favreau was deliberately pointing out that there was a new guy in the role. The second act had pacing problems and the third act seemed constipated, but it was worth seeing in theatres. Not on opening weekend, maybe about three months later when it goes to the $1.50. RTs rating of 75% is pretty accurate. 5/13/2010 12:42:18 AM |

Well I think the line worked in the context of the Senate hearing scene.
I thought it was a clever way for them to acknowledge the change in actors and move past it.
Although I do think of the scene in Vegas Vacation where Clark Griswold says "You kids are growing up so fast it's like I don't even recognize you anymore!" 5/13/2010 12:48:02 PM |

Why would they feel the need to tell the audience that this is how it is, get used to it. How could you be upset with the upgrade from Howard to Cheadle? 5/13/2010 12:56:27 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
Cheadle is no where near the upgrade you people were expecting (in this film). His on screen chemistry with RDJ is nowhere near as good as Howard's was.
Would i take Don Cheadle in almost any other film over Howard? Yes, most likely. But here, it wasn't an upgrade. They had to have that throw away line because they make almost no attempt to develop any kind of friendship between this new Rhodes and Tony Stark. You, as the viewer, are just supposed to take their word for it that they are friends. Had it been Howard in this movie, the scene at Stark's birthday party would have succeeded in that emotional element it was going for. instead, it felt empty.

Someone posted this on facebook and it frustrated me in so many ways:
Quote : | "Blah movie. I was cheering for Ivan more than Tony. Tony was a jerk. Ivan had good reason to tear him down. A movie about a superhero that ends up making its audience side with the villain isn't very well written. Besides, Ivan wasn't anything like the original Omega Red. He should have at least gotten more action and screen time. Blah movie overall." |
My response:
Quote : | "Tony Stark is supposed to be unliked by the reader/audience to begin with, because his story is about the transformation of his personality. Ivan was just a jealous brute who was an unfortunate result of his father's alcoholism. I'm not sure where you got Omega Red from, because Ivan's villain name is Whiplash. Omega Red is from X-Men, so obviously Ivan would be nothing like him." |

agreed.
And Hammer--was I the only one to notice his spray tan palms?? (I haven't read the whole thread, just this page). Particularly the scene he's having dinner w/ Ivan in the hanger...I was so distracted. Probably done on purpose just to show how much of a joke he really was, and if so...success!

But Wang said the effort had been well worth it - with his costume drawing praise from his bosses and compliments from women.
He claimed some had even 'fallen in love' with him because of it.
