This got me thinking today...why does holding in your own endzone result in 2 points? Is it a given that without the holding, the quarterback would be sacked? Pass interference in the endzone doesnt result in a touchdown. This is the only penalty that actually results in points being put on the board. I dunno, maybe Im just biased and bitter, but...if there is ever an example of refs handing a win to a team, this was it. 9/13/2009 2:07:02 AM |

in general, any penalty which occurs in the offense's endzone against the offense incurs a safety. Just like any penalty in the defense's endzone against the defense results in the ball being placed on the 1 yard-line (IIRC) 9/13/2009 2:14:01 AM |

so put the ball on the 1 yard line (to reward the D).
Also that was such a questionable holding call. It looked like Quinn stumbled and the guy just rode him to the ground, he didn't hold him down or anything.
I've watched thousands of football games and ive never ever seen that called except for pop warner and maybe in some podunk high school game. 9/13/2009 8:37:34 AM |

It's a safety because if you're committing a penalty in your own endzone the ball is most likely already on your own 5 yard line or less anyway. So, if the only penalty was to place the ball at your own 1 yd line again then it isn't a penalty at all really. In fact, you would be holding, blocking in the back, face mask, etc ALL day because there would be no repercussions from it. You'd help your QB avoid the sack AND get another free play after the penalty was called. 9/13/2009 8:49:05 AM |

^That same logic could be applied for pass interference calls in the endzone. You could pass 100 times from the 1-yard line and the defense would just keep nailing WR's before the ball got there, no reason to let them even come close to catching it. 9/13/2009 9:41:49 AM |

Riding a defender to the ground like that is about as blatant as holding gets. You need to pay better attention.9/13/2009 2:45:02 PM |

defensive pass interference resets the down count on top of the yardage penalty, making the touchdown nearly inevitable
unless offensive holding in the end zone bumped the down count up to 4 (or resulted in immediate safety), there'd be little motivation to avoid it9/13/2009 3:00:02 PM |

i always wonder why when teams are backed up on their goal line with like 20 secs to go in the game they dont just interfere on every play until the clock runs out. eventually the qb will fuck up a pass or get sacked 9/13/2009 3:06:08 PM |

i still think losing that usc game was the best thing for this team.
1) people think we are a complete waste against a garbage sec team. 2) play a real team first and make sure we prime the team before we push our way into the rankings slowly as the season goes
unc has done the complete opposite. 1) people think they are legit b/c they have a #19/#25 ranking in some polls. 2) get exposed by cupcakes for who they are and get beat to hell culminating a failure of a season and coaching staff in a gigantic loss to nc state in november.

butch davis just needs to win 7 or 8 games this year before they play us so that our game with them 'really counts' and gives us somewhat of a boost in the rankings.
he also needs a good 12-15 years there to 'establish' that program and steal about 35% of the basketball budget. 9/14/2009 11:16:40 AM |

Carolina was the better team today. Good for the ACC if nothing else.
I didn't watch much of the game, but what happened to Pinkney? I could have sworn he was a good QB at one point. His mechanics are horrible, and he doesn't see the field well at all. 9/19/2009 4:10:08 PM |

It's not you, Shone Drone, Little, and Rome feel the need to draw as much attention to themselves after EVERY play. And of course, the ECU player gets the late hit flag, I expect a lot more of that in the future for UNC from the refs. To the topic, UNC has done what they've needed to do, it's not something they should apologize for, being that every OOC team they've played the last two years has absolutely wet the bed. The bad thing now is that UNC can go 4-4 in conference and be 8-4 overall, and they play Duke and UVA, so 4-4 is highly likely. Tech(s), Miami, and FSU have to beat UNC. Strangely, I think they will beat Miami out of that bunch.9/20/2009 9:53:16 AM |

That play was 3rd and 12. UNC had already missed a FG. If pushed back 15 yards for the block in the back penalty, then it becomes a questionable FG. ECU at least has the potential to score and tie.9/20/2009 11:55:57 AM |
