A few days ago read on the news that China and Cuba had blocked footage of the Iranian protests lest the respective populaces got any ideas....
Well today there were protests in China by a minority group, and they were brutally suppressed. Iranians were harsh? Nah... the first few days the protesters got away with everything. China? Just on the very day the protests started, there were images of bloodied protesters om the streets--including young women--all over the news stations. 7/6/2009 6:56:34 PM |

I just really wish these demonstrations would turn to open revolt. It's the only way any real change is going to come to these 2 particular places. It's gotta come from within, without any semblance of US or other western involvement. Neither country has a military or government that could withstand total open revolt. 7/6/2009 9:39:22 PM |

After the speech, downtown Tehran erupted in violence as security forces attacked crowds of demonstrators, older and grayer than recent gatherings, who were chanting "Death to the dictator!" and "God is great."
Tear gas filled streets as demonstrators sought to enter the gates of Tehran University, which riot police had locked. The crowds swarmed through downtown, chanting slogans as the afternoon wore on, lighting cigarettes and putting them in front of one another's faces to ward off the effects of the tear gas.
Masked demonstrators also set trash fires in the middle of roadways to burn off the tear gas, videos posted on YouTube showed. Another group shut down two highways, while yet another handed flowers to smiling policemen and kissed them on the cheeks, according to witnesses.
Another large group gathered in front of the Ministry of Interior, which is under the control of Sadegh Mahsouli, a wealthy ally of Ahmadinejad.
"Mahsouli! Mahsouli! Give my vote back," they chanted, according to a video posted to YouTube. 7/17/2009 3:16:06 PM |

just a small FYI, i heard a native Iranian commentator on Bill Maher a few weeks ago, I think actually the week of or after the election, who said all the "Death to _____" business that we hear about is overblown. That is, when we hear them say "Death to America", "Death to Israel", "Death to the Dictator", etc, they don't (necessarily) mean literal "death to".
He said in Persian, that "death to ___" is just an expression, and a better translation would be "down with ____" or simply "damn ___". For example, if an Iranian does something stupid, they often say, literally, "death to myself", but obviously they don't mean it as such.
he wasn't trying to defend Iran, or at least the Iranian administration, but was making it clear all the "death to" business is different over there than it is here 7/17/2009 5:34:31 PM |
