I think the Basilone story has been the most developed so far. His story probably could have been a movie within itself. Hopefully, Sledge's tale comes around full circle. The pace of these stories seems a little off.
goalielax, I recommend the block user plugin. I haven't read a Black Dog post in over a week. It's fantastic.

i think the story is just so grand in its scope that it's hard to develop everyone to the intimate details that BoB did. but I also think that the bitching about this series was way premature. you can't tell me the last 4 episodes haven't pulled all these storylines together into a compelling show

I'm so glad we have a massive picture of a computer at the top of the page. It's completely relevant to the discussion going on here.
Did anybody else think that "the most beautiful woman [Basilone] had ever seen" was kinda fugly? I mean, she wasn't completely hideous, but certianly not anything special. I get that he kinda went after her because she initially turned him down and provided a challenge, but...I dunno, they could have gotten a prettier actress for that part, IMO. 5/5/2010 6:32:00 AM |

Ugh, I just can't help myself from preferring BoB to this. The stories being told about the 3 men seem so disjointed since you sometimes go 2-3 weeks without seeing anything about 1 of them. 5/5/2010 1:55:24 PM |

Something that crossed my mind watching last week's was that BoB was going from D-Day till the end of the war, so they had what, 2 years tops (going back to training) to cover. The Pacific is almost trying to cover the entire pacific campaign. Would explain the disjointedness of it all. 5/9/2010 11:28:16 PM |
goalielax All American 11252 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, i mentioned that back on page 4
easy company was established at Camp Toccoa in 1942, and the war in Europe started with D-Day on 6 June 1944 and ended on 8 May 1945 just over 11 months
the war in the pacific for the 1st Marines started at Guadalcanal on 7 August 1942 and lasted until V-J Day on on Aug 15 1945...just over 36 months.
just another comparison to show the scope: the 101st Airborne had 1,766 Killed In Action and 6,388 Wounded In Action in the 11 months in Europe. the 1st Marines had 1,252 Killed in Action and 5,274 Qounded in Action in the 10 days they spent on Peleliu

My main problem with it is how disjointed it is. There isnt a storyline that flows through this more than 2-3 episodes, then I have to get to know all knew characters and forget the rest. Some people may call that a good thing, but for entertainment sake, it sucks.
I am not saying I havent liked the series, its just not all that an a bag of chips. i give it a 6.5 out of 10, where BoB was more like a 8.5 out of 10. 5/10/2010 4:00:22 PM |
Arab13 Art Vandelay 45180 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, i do kinda agree with the disjointed aspect, they should have put all of the 'stories' in order 1-4, 5-7, 8-10? just to keep each story line more coherent week by week. 5/10/2010 4:06:47 PM |
Zel Sa Da Tay 2094 Posts user info edit post |
Maybe you think of it as disjointed because of the island hopping aspect of the pacific theater where as in BoB it was a continuous trek east towards and into Germany?

If your show doesn't have compelling characters, then there is a hard ceiling on how good it can be

episode 9 was intense. great depiction of the psyche of these guys...sledge's descent into all out hate for the Japanese, then showing his humanity in holding the dying civilian woman (who was carrying a grenade?? )
I also liked the reference at the end to the atomic bombs, and then the closing shot of the B-29's, the plane that dropped the A-bombs, flying overhead
one of the best of the series i think. but like someone else said, i think im looking forward to it wrapping up 5/11/2010 9:07:49 PM |

i think the whole thing rise and fall of hating the Japanese is a little dramatic. i imagine everyone there was full of hate and rage for these japanese, but that doesnt make for very good liberal television 5/11/2010 10:45:23 PM |
skokiaan All American 26447 Posts user info edit post |
So, you interpret mowing down japs indiscriminately then finally not killing a toddler and old lady as a "rise and fall of hate"?
GTFO with that shit. Trying too hard to contrive some political bullshit where there is none 5/12/2010 1:19:08 AM |
DoubleDown All American 9382 Posts user info edit post |
oh you were going after the unrelated toddler scenario? i was going after the obvious scenario where Sledge shot an attacking japanese soldier with his sidearm, then later did not shoot an unarmed japanese man, while people over his shoulder did, reiterating his earlier comment about "we're here to kill, arent we?".
GTFO with that misinformation bullshit, hippy
another key scene is the Intelligence marine leaving his unrestrained prisoners in the middle of a trail, and threatening to court marshal the other marines for pushing his prisoner to the ground. really? i imagine anything short of killing the guy would not be frowned upon in those days.
but we're in a different culture now, where navy SEALs are tried by our government for punching a suspected terrorist in the stomach while detained. 5/12/2010 1:56:17 AM |

i just think that war dehumanizes all involved, it doesnt teach them all a lesson in humility like was depicted in this last episode. that whole idea is pretty cliche. i think a war hardened Sledge was more likely to kill unarmed / innocent Japanese than fresh off the boat rookies would be, after everything he'd already been through 5/12/2010 11:26:04 PM |

so what'd we all think? now that the series is over and we can really reflect on it, good/bad? i for one really enjoyed this series; i gave it a chance right from the get-go not expecting anything out of it and because of that, was rewarded with a great mini-series. i look forward to watching all the episodes again in succession without a week in between each one. in time, i think people who were critical of this series for not being BoB will see the true value and merit in it - that while it focused more on individual stories those men were still all apart of a brotherhood forged in combat. 5/17/2010 9:32:52 AM |

overall it was a damn good mini-series for me.
i tend to give a lot of value to "intent", as opposed to only the end resulting delivery.
there were a lot of different angles that had to be captured, a lot of different components of the human element that had to be touched on in a short amount of time; not to mention a long time period, large and fragmented geography, and a lot of battles that had to be framed into a relatively small number of episodes.
those of you who are disappointed when compared to BOB, i see where you're coming from, but this was nontheless a pretty good story telling of accounts in the Pacific.
btw, i'm glad Leckie ended up with Vera and not that POG from West Point who "missed the whole show".
i have family in Raritan, NJ - going to ask them about the parade they hold for Basilone.
the part about Sledge not wanting to put on a uniform at the ball & not wanting to fire the gun when out with his dad was telling. there is definitely a biological response regarding PTSD that we have not yet fully understood -- epigenetic changes (not changes in genetic code per se, but changes in how DNA is expressed in cells) are definitely occuring, and can be clearly observed via certain biomarkers in those suffering from PTSD. 5/17/2010 12:14:01 PM |
