when you shoot, your crosshair spreads out from the center, essentially to indicate reduced accuracy for the next shot if it is taken before the crosshair returns to normal, iirc

so people who got it... love, hate?

wasn't feeling it but got it cause the crew will be playing

glad the multiplayer doesn't feel as sluggish as past versions which makes me happy

just hope it doesn't turn into a situation where theres only one tactic and set of weapons that you can actually use and still win like I feel the other halos turned into. I like being able to outplan and outmaneuver opponents since I'm never going to be able to do the 2-3 head shot as good as the best players

^ Yes, there is 4-player co-op over XBL. After a week or two they'll add a Campaign playlist to Matchmaking so you can play co-op with strangers if you want.

Also:
- Reticule Bloom has been turned down from the Beta - it really wasn't all that noticeable to me.
- Stick around after the credits.

Haven't gotten around to multiplayer yet, but at least in the beta the keys to success were the same as in Halo 3: Control the power weapons.

Exactly

In played the shit out of halo 1, still played halo 2 quite a bit. By Halo 3 teh game got watered down
to a straight run N Gun cluster fuck which felt more like playing Unreal tournament. No longer was there a feeling
of dominance possess the shotgun or sword. Grenades were more of a nuissance than a serious threat (in halo 1 a well
placed grenade meant instant death). The levels sucked and it took a full clip of my AR to put down anyone.

Unless I am overwhelmed when i go visit my buddy who got the game at midnight, i have nointent of buying this game.
I will wait for CoD Covert Ops.

Well I'm loving this game (campaign at least) so far. wahoowa and I plow through what was about the first 1/2 of the game on Legendary last night, and I was hugely impressed. The new engine Bungie used does wonders for the detail level of the game, and I'm still really impressed with the AI thus far. I've never worried so much about enemies trying to flank my position or turtling up in a bunker to avoid fire.

Reticle bloom isn't so bad, at least with the DMR (my new favorite weapon I think) but I feel like the AR is the most wothless weapon in the game (campaign-wise) now. A full clip isn't enough to even bring down the shields of an elite anymore, but the trade off is some of the new covy weapons...I'm appreciating the DMR-esque needler rifle alot.

Can't wait to finish up the campaign in the next day or two (I'm down for more tww runs if anyone wants to get into it this afternoon) and then get into multiplayer. I never got into firefight much before, but I'm thinking of giving that a try too.

Can't wait for the workday to be over!

Haha I feel like poor Bean had to drag/carry me kicking and screaming through that 1/2 we did, but it was rewarding nontheless.

We definitely need to get a TWW issue posse together for this game...Its a Halo policy of mine to finish a campaign before going MP so it'll be another day or two before I'm ready to roll, but count me in!

I actually think campaign is easy now (yes, even on legendary) in coop with the correct usage of some of the armor abilities. Specifically the bubble shield. If you pop it down when one of your buddies die, then they will respawn regardless of enemies. And, it's a healing bubble shield!!!!

"at least in the beta the keys to success were the same as in Halo 3: Control the power weapons."

Power weapons will always be somewhat important, but from everything I've played, they have much less of an impact on the game than they did in the other Halos. Part of this might just be that they spawn a little less often (it seems like, anyway), but they're also designed a bit differently. Rather than allowing you to completely control the map like they did in the others, most of the power weapons allow you to get faster and easier single kills, but you can get overwhelmed by the enemy team working together against you (moreso than you could in H2 and H3 anyway). It's also worth mentioning that they made the sniper a bit harder to use (though it feels good... shoots like a sniper should shoot. It's just harder.).

Quote :
"In played the shit out of halo 1, still played halo 2 quite a bit. By Halo 3 teh game got watered down"

Just in case you missed the memo, this game is a return to a lot of the fundamentals of Halo 1. Bungie brought back a handful of the gameplay designers from the first game (some of whom also worked on shadowrun) and they've been the creative leads when it comes to gameplay and balance. And it shows. The biggest improvement is that the pistol is a good weapon again.

Quote :
"Grenades were more of a nuissance than a serious threat (in halo 1 a well placed grenade meant instant death)."

Grenades are definitely a serious threat in this game. There were at least a few times last night where I was easily out-shooting some person at mid-range with the DMR, needle rifle, or pistol, only to have him drop a frag grenade at my feet and kill me (or at least very nearly kill me). You still won't lose all your health to a single grenade like in H1, but they still do respectable damage, and a lot of their power comes from how fast they travel and how quickly they can explode.

Quote :
"No longer was there a feeling of dominance possess the shotgun or sword."

I don't like Halo 3 either, and I agree with you that they tried too hard to balance the sword and made it suck, but... well, I think your complaint is the opposite of what made Halo 3 terrible. In H3, EVERY weapon (except the carbine and pistol and maybe one I'm forgetting) became a close-range weapon due to the awful melee system (they were just too strong - killing someone with a melee while they still have almost half their shield is just retarded)... there was a lot less variety in gameplay when everything within a few yards becomes "shoot for ~1 second then melee". Either way, though, we can agree that Halo 3 was bad. This game actually expects and encourages mid-range and long-range fights.

Quote :
"The levels sucked and it took a full clip of my AR to put down anyone."

The AR still takes most of a clip to kill someone... but unlike in Halo 3, if you spawn with an AR you'll almost always have a secondary that is much much better (pistol or DMR generally). It's designed as a weapon for rushing players who don't know how to shoot well at range, anyway, so it's really best not to use it in the first place... unless you can't shoot well at range and like to charge straight at the enemy, of course. For everyone else, the AR just a situational weapon for close-quarters when you don't have anything better to use.

TL;DR:
This is a good game, and is a lot like Halo 1 in many respects. Completely abandons the bad direction that the series took with Halo 3. Also, it expects you to learn how to shoot well at mid- to long-range.

Oddly enough, I'm better at sniping in Reach than Halo 3. In Halo 3 I'm a pretty bad sniper. My BR was good enough that I could be competitive on all but the highest of levels (I could out BR some 50s, but the real pros make quick work of me) but my sniping was pretty pathetic. Using that 50 scale, my BR was in the mid to upper 40s, but my sniping was probably in the mid 20s.

What playlist are you in? I don't even remember seeing it come up yet.... then again I've mostly played team objective instead of team slayer.

Speaking of objective, Stockpile is an awesome gametype and I love it.

I was more or less comparing the sniping to H1 (where it's easy to hit a steady shot on people) and H2 (where you could sweep-snipe, among other things)... If I got the sniper in Halo 3 I'd generally go for no-scope shots since the auto-aim still pulled it even when de-scoped (this doesn't happen anymore in reach).

I've actually heard a lot of other people say they have an easier time sniping in Reach since it released... maybe I just haven't gotten used to it yet.

I played several games of multiplayer tonight.

The AR still sucks, hard.
I personally feel like the game is exactly the same as the beta. I literally see no difference in gameplay at all. I still run like I'm 400+lbs and I feel like I'm shooting Play-Doh bullets unless it's a headshot. I think I enjoyed two games out of about ten.

If I could take it back tomorrow and get my money back, I probably would.
Here's hoping it gets a little better...

I have. I'm still too bitter.

The needler and rocket launcher are basically the only things making it fun right now. And the jet pack.

The sniper rifle is way too forgiving, and most of the rest of the guns, like the AR, feel underpowered to me.

Have I mentioned Reach's spawn system being the worst I've ever seen in my entire life? This includes everything from Goldeneye to Halo to CoD and everything in between. I'm pretty much sold on Black Ops if it has a decent spawn system.

Maybe I've just played too many FPS's, or I need more sleep.. but I'm just pissed about this game right now. I'll cease all negativity until further notice.

- You probably wouldn't even notice bloom if the reticule didn't show it. As long as you aren't spamming the trigger as fast as you can it really shouldn't affect your shots that much.

- Halo has always had one of the best spawn systems, period. Maybe you've just been unlucky lately, I've had no issues with it. No spawning system can guarantee you a 100% safe spawn, but Halo does a pretty good job.

Also, it's not obvious but you have a higher probability of spawning near the teammate you are currently watching (switch using the D-pad).

- Hologram is the greatest thing ever, especially in Sniper games. So satisfying.

Haha much gaming-love to ^ for dragging my ass through the Legendary campaign...it got to the point where he knew he had to have a small area he could run back to to make sure I could respawn every 2 to 3 minutes. Plus its always cool to hear him actually talk rather than the CoD MP where he's just a concentrated killing machine!

The story was awesome, and I'm really glad I blew my gift cards on the legendary edition so I have that model of Noble Team. Its almost a little sad how attached to them I grew by the end of the game haha!

All that said I'm also looking forward to rolling with some T-dubbers in Multiplayer now.

I can see how this game would be easier on co-op, but none of my regular friends have picked this up so solo on Heroic is where I'm starting.

I woke my wife up last night screaming at my useless squadmate. "FLANK THE GOD DAMNED HUNTER!" Even when I got behind the hunter the dude just stood there and did not shoot it in the back like a useful partner would.

Oh and Sabre level was more fun than I expected. There needs to be more of that.

^in halo 2 you could set your sensitivity to 10, use the sniper and swipe around without being scoped, pull the trigger as soon as it turns red, and get headshots. it takes practice, but it's extremely effective.

There should be an article out soon that details the Reach spawning system (so that people making Forge maps can know how to place good spawn points).

No spawn system is perfect, but I know that Halo games:
- Try not to spawn you in any "dangerous" areas (near enemies, on top of a grenade, in the path of a rocket). I think it takes into account where your enemies are looking at too.
- Try to spawn you near teammates (especially the one that you are currently observing)
- Generally spawn you on your team's side of the map (inside your base or midfield if the flag has been taken).

The multiplayer maps that aren't remakes of Halo 2 masterpieces are garbage for the most part...

I don't get all the complaints about the AR being bad... You'll pretty much always spawn with a better secondary, so just hit Y and forget the AR exists. I already explained it anyway - it's a gun made for people who can't shoot well and just try to go 1:1 K/D by rushing straight at people. Everyone else should only use it for close-quarters situations, and even then, the pistol can be better if you know how to use it at that range. Do some people have an emotional attachment to the AR or something that makes them sad to see it being shitty?

...Or the complaints about guns being weak unless you headshot people.... that's kind of the point of this game. Hell, it's the biggest reason this is a MUCH better game than Halo 3, it actually expects people to learn to shoot the guns somewhat accurately rather than just giving every non-sniper weapon a stupidly large spread. The game revolves around getting headshots for kills, in what way is this a bad thing? (Well, okay, it makes the game less accessible to bad players... but more bad players doesn't really equal a better game.)

^The Cage is awesome, as is one other new one I don't remember the name of. Zealot is also good, and it's a sort-of-remake of a Halo 1 map. On the other hand, the remake of H2's Sanctuary (Asylum, I think) seems pretty terrible.

If you haven't used Forge yet, it's pretty damn comprehensive, and Forgeworld is huge... there's going to be some pretty incredible community maps out soon, and Bungie has already said they're going to try and vet community maps for inclusion into multiplayer playlists.

^I think it should be like Halo CE where a headshot does more damage to the shield than a body shot.

I think that would make the bloom work better, to ensure that players who are patient and accurate are rewarded. The way it is now, any mid range DMR battle is no-skill inaccurate spray.

^I could agree with that, definitely.

I really haven't noticed the no-skill-inaccurate-spray situations you're talking about, but that might just be because I'm always trying to time my shots accurately with the bloom. Hell, if there's anything I ought to improve on, it's learning to shoot faster/at center of mass when the enemy is close and still has shields, because there's definitely times when I've gotten killed at that range by shooting a touch too slowly.

I don't understand all this hate for reticule bloom. If anything, it adds MORE skill to the game. Learning how to pace your shots correctly for different guns/ranges/situations adds a factor to differentiate skill between two players who have the same aiming ability.

Close range? Shoot as fast as you can, the bullets should still hit.
Medium range? Shoot at a normal pace.
Long range? Calm down and wait for accurate shots.

Shields up? Shoot a little faster, it doesn't matter where the bullet hits.
Shields down? Take that extra half second to get an accurate headshot.

Oh, and your beloved AR isn't as bad as everyone thinks.
It just isn't as good as a DMR or Pistol in medium to long range 1v1 encounters, but that should be common sense. It's not intended to be a long-range weapon. And any short-range spawn weapon shouldn't automatically be better than the short-range spawn weapons found on the map.
Combining AR with grenades or melee is where it shines, and concentrated AR fire in team games works wonders.

My problem with redicule bloom is that it slows down the game. With a BR or Halo CE pisol, with good aim I can kill someone really quickly (3 shot with pistol or 4 shot with BR). In Reach the player has all the time in the world to run away or go into armour lock. Not only is the best you can do now a 5 shot, but you have to wait for bloom.

I get what the idea of bloom was but I still see instances of rapid firing pistols and DMRs getting lucky.

Keep in mind, I have limited exposure to Halo, and havent bothered to read anything

The Armor that you get in the Armory is more than cosmetic, right?

Also, do you need to lead any of your shots in this game?
