I really don't understand the starting pitcher decision. Starting a guy who according to the season stats hasn't started a game all season and has only thrown 23.1 innings with a 7.71 ERA. I realize we're playing the number 4 seed who got shutout by Coastal but it doesn't matter what kind of pitchers you have to pitch the next games if you don't make it to the next game. 7 batters faced to begin the game with 3 hits, 2 HBP, a BB and 1 out and responsible for all 6 runs in the 1st. Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me

We only have 2 pitchers left who are any good. Sogard and Mazone, I guess the thinking was that we would have to win 3 games after today in order to win the regional and that today's game would be the easiest. Decision obviously backfired in the first inning. But then again, we couldn't hit a beach ball right now.

Yeah, once you make it to the NCAA tournament, as a coach u cant take ANYONE for granted, I mean each of the other 63 teams were good enough to make the tourney, so I dont know what the hell Avent was thinking with our starting pitcher today.....he better have a kick ass pitching recruiting class coming in next season!

I mentioned this in another thread, but next years recruiting class, and more so the year after have some great pitchers in them. I know more of the ones in 2011 as opposed to 2010, but if they get on campus we should have very good pitching in the next couple years. Of course this could all change if people go pro, we lose coaches, or our coaches can't develop talent etc...

I like Avent a lot and I think he truly loves State, but I still fail to see how in your 13th and 14th years a coach you run out a pitching staff that is that terrible. Buchanan didn't have a good outing in our first game and were facing elimination. So instead of going with your #2 or 3 pitcher - we put in a guy with a 7 ERA that hasn't started a game this year.

I think with all the current changes going on in our athletic department we won't see a change made in baseball this offseason, but if we don't win an NCAA game next year for the 3rd straight year I could see it happening then. We made history today by allowing Stony Brook to get their first NCAA win ever.

Any pitching decision is made by Holliday, not Avent. That includes everything. That is why you never see Avent go to the mound to change pitchers

Oh I know. But you know that with a decision that is that important to the team and to the season then I highly doubt Avent wouldn't have absolutely zero say in the matter. Regardless though it was a stupid move. They held out better pitchers in order to make sure that if a pitcher with a 7 ERA (who hasn't ever started a game before) wins then we'd have a shot later in the regional. I just don't see how that happens.

I thing the question you should be asking is how does the best hitting team in one of the best baseball conferences score only 2 runs against Stony Brook (who gave up 25 runs to CC). We didn't lose b/c we gave up 6 runs. We lost b/c we didn't out score them. Which is the only way we make it to the super regionals.

In defense of Holliday, any loss at that point sends you home. So if you know you'll have to win 3 straight games to move on, you arrange you pitching staff so that the match ups work best in your favor. Maybe he thought we'd be able to score off Stony Brook pitching so he'll save his better pitchers for the next games.

Wow, that is a lot earlier than I thought he would go. Good for him, but potentially bad news for our football program. He can still get a nice bonus in that spot...

Congrats to Russell, but yeah this could be bad for our fb team. If I am Wilson, I am seriously considering signing as the offer from the Rockies should be solid. I am surprised he went that high.

Also what is with the Rockies loading up on ACC QBs - Kyle Parker yesterday, Russell today.

[Edited on June 8, 2010 at 2:27 PM. Reason : V My bad. isn't kyle wilson on NC State's team?]

Never heard of Kyle Wilson? Who the hell was that standing in center field and batting leadoff? Damn, I must not have watched one baseball game this year.

Wilson, Buchanan, Wilson, Dallas Poulk, and Sogard all got drafted.

Hoping RW returns for fb and Buchanan returns for one more year as the ace.

Congrats to Jake Buchanan and Alex Sogard who have both signed their professional contracts with the Houston Astros. Sad to see Jake go but it is still good for him.
Wade Moore has also signed a deal with the Nats.

That sucks. Our best pitcher and best pitching recruit got drafted. With how bad the pitching has been the last 2 years I was hoping it'd improve next year. Our offense should still be good, but not the type of 10 runs per game good we were this year.
