Gray Young -> Burning Star Core -> Locrian -> Sleepy Sun -> Collections of Colonies of Bees (amazing)
Colonies of bees are playing a day party at pour house today at noon. I highly recommend them after only discovering their brilliance last night. I'm gonna try to be there on my lunch.
also i missed birds of avalon but heard they killed it.
and the new kings is awesome. The Megafaun set there is going to be awesome.

Man, I felt like an asshole all night, but the extra money on VIP has been TOTALLY worth it so far.
free drinks->No(read: shorter) lines. Wouldn't have seen Best Coast/Javelin/F. Islands w/o the red band probably. Definitely not all of them.
My only regret was not leaving halfway through F. Islands to catch some Akron/Family but I was having too much fun. 9/10/2010 11:35:08 AM |

yes! i had never heard them before and decided to check them out since no one else was playing yet. there were maybe 20 people there.
stayed at lincoln theatre through max indian and then headed to tir na nog. best coast was meh. then headed to berkeley for future islands. got in after about a 30 minute wait in line with about 5 minutes before they started their set. great close to the night.

Did Gray Young>10 min of Deakin (kinda weak)>Cults>Best Coast>Sleepy Sun>Akron/Family
Akron/Family was the highlight of the night for me. They killed it. My biggest regret, though, is not running over to Berkeley for Javelin and Future Islands. Sleepy Sun was OK but not great live right before Akron/Family.
The other highlight of the night was skipping lines--as someone already said, I felt like a huge dick last night, especially outside TNN getting into Cults, but the VIP wristband was already paying HUGE dividends last night and will definitely allow me to open up my schedule to a lot of different venues tonight & tomorrow. Will do VIP again next year.
Tonight my schedule is: Rosebuds>BSS>Panda>1st half of Spider Bags>All of Sharon van Etten>Double Negative>The War on Drugs>Fucked Up/Atlas Sound (will feel this last one out and decide which to go to at the last minute; main reason for wanting to see Atlas Sound is to see Cox and Panda Bear do "Walkabout"). 9/10/2010 12:51:19 PM |

Luckily, I didn't go to Atlas Sound until the very end of his set because I was busy having my face melted off by The War on Drugs. Can't emphasize it enough--they sounded fucking AMAZING. Couldn't even handle it. Sooooo fucking good.
I did this: BSS>Panda Bear>Spider Bags>Sharon van Etten>The War on Drugs>last 3 songs of Atlas Sound
It was really a perfect night of music, and I'd be tough to convince that I made a single mistake in my show decisions for the night. BSS sounded fantastic and Panda was great, and then we headed over to Slim's right at 10 and Spider Bags were already on (which was weird b/c they were scheduled for 10). We got to catch 5-6 songs of their set and they were awesome as usual. And then Sharon van Etten @ The Pour House...JESUS. I don't usually like singer/songwriters live because I typically think they're pretty boring live, but watching and hearing her sing was totally breathtaking. She is such a haunting presence on the stage and her voice is so beautiful. She started out with a few upbeat numbers, which were great, and her band sounded really tight, but then when she did the slower, quieter stuff, it went to a whole 'nother level. Only problem was...
Quote : | "Typical Pour House crowd will not STFU" |
I wish people at The Pour House would've given the artist some respect and STFU. Would've made those quieter songs even more perfect. Might not've been the right vibe for some last night because it was definitely a downer and not the right vibe if you're just trying to party, but anyone who missed her NEEDS to see her at her day party later today. Just trust me.
And then, The War on Drugs were, as previously mentioned, just fucking awesome. One of the best shows I've been to at a small club, and definitely the best one I've seen at a small club in Raleigh. Couldn't believe some people were filing out towards the end, presumably to check out Atlas Sound/Fucked Up. After TWAD, headed over to Kings for the last three songs of Atlas Sound and immediately realized I definitely made the right choice with TWAD. Talked to a few of my buddies who were at Kings all night and they both said the two before Atlas Sound weren't very good and Atlas Sound was good, but nothing special (and no "Walkabout" w/Panda Bear).
Bummed to have missed Raekwon and really bummed to have missed Double Negative/Fucked Up, but I don't have a single regret about the shows I saw last night. So fucking amazing. My mind was blown about 4 different times.

We actually ended up in the stairwell next to the stage. The wall there basically canceled out the noise from the crowd, and she sounded amazing from that vantage point.9/11/2010 10:27:30 AM |

I thought atlas sound was amazing-- one of the most beautiful performances I've ever seen. The two bands before him were terrible but it was well worth it to be right by the stage for atlas sound.

yesterday was pretty perfect for me. got into downtown around 3, went to the Megafaun day party (awesome set, fun crowd), Harlem day party @ Slim's (fuck yes), VIP lounge for free beer/artichoke dip/sweet potato tater tots/vitamin water, Rosebuds, BSS, then went backstage during their set and was drinking next to Damian from Fucked Up and Superchunk Mac. really enjoyed Panda Bear's set, started kind of slow but when he started dropping those beats i was loving it, great crowd around me and perfect weather. drank a little in front of Big Easy, caught some of SVE, then War On Drugs blew my mind. probably my favorite show of the weekend so far. goddamn they were good. probably gonna head out at like 1 today for the Drughorse/Trekky thing. also went to ruby red to see Whatever Brains but i left at 5:20 when they were starting because i didn't really want to be there til the sun came up.

yesterday was awesome. started off at tir na nog for some lunch and caught veelee. then headed over to slims for rest of the afternoon - harlem rocked it. rosebuds/bss/panda was fun, although bss was no where near as good as when i saw them at orange peel. headed back to slims for spider bags who rocked just as much as harlem. then stopped over to the hive for the beginning of active child, before heading to kings to get there early for atlas sound. ben frost (the guy who played before atlas sound) was AWFUL. my ears wanted to vomit after painfully sitting through that set. atlas sound was very enjoyable though, although from what it sounds like, i probably should have gone to see the war on drugs instead.

Broken Social Scene's closer was great.
My foot pain was more gripping than Panda Bear's performance.
Ryan Gustafson was good enough that I didn't much resent his apparent sexiness.
I was too close to the speakers, and a good chunk of the crowd was talking a lot, so the sound from Sharon Van Etten wasn't ideal. Still good, though. Chicks who play instruments are hot (thats why I'm a such a proponent of the rape whistle).
The previously anonymous to me Schooner inspired me to search them out for a download.
