one day i'll go back and try them again... its an easy way to cycle the used car lot at least. (i think it adds new used cars whenever you load a race/test/whatever)

how many of you are driving with automatic transmissions vs. manual transmissions? I was using an automatic transmission, but now that I've switch to a wheel I find the paddle shifters to be too much fun not to use.
I am amazed at how much different this game is with a wheel setup. Stuff like S-curves are so much easier to maneuver now that I can feather the throttle, but switchbacks have become incredibly difficult because the wheel turns 450ยบ to lockout in each direction. 1/3/2011 11:54:25 AM |

i use manual even when not using the wheel.
i find revving as high as you can past the redline will help you squeeze out some extra power in most cars. problem with this is the "gear downshift notification" that flashes when you're approaching a brake becomes inaccurate, though but in general i think it especially helps on those license tests. 1/3/2011 12:51:33 PM |

Finally got a CTR! it popped up in the used car lot, along with a NOMAD Diablo JGTC racecar (supposedly very rare car in the game). It's pretty nasty to drive!
I always shift manually. As far as shift points sometimes make sure to look at the power curves of the engine. I was racing a Mini in the online challenge and shifting at redline (7000). I wasn't coming close to winning. Then I noticed the power dropped off big time after 6200 or so (silly turbo engine). I started shifting early and won the race next time around. 1/3/2011 2:37:21 PM |

Has anyone golded all the AMG Driving School Intermediate level events yet? I spent 3 hours on Sunday working on that and golded all the individual track segments but not the full lap. To get gold you have to get below a 7:05.000 and while that's hard enough on its own there are 11 other Mercedes models on the track at the same time that you have to navigate around! After 7-8 attempts my best time is a 7:16.xxx, still well off the pace
The prize for this is a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, a pretty sweet Le Mans car from around 10 years ago.

Specter, I think that's a great idea! We should organize a group that races once every 3-4 weeks on a different track with the same car governed by a set of guidelines. We could make a virtual series out of it and have qualifying for 1-2 hrs before the event itself. I'd ideally imagine having races that are long enough to require one pit stop so there'd be a little bit of strategy going on (50 laps or so, depending on track length). Spec Miata is a good idea, but I'd be open to any variety of models so long as they're under 300hp (I think having lower powered cars equals the playing field a bit for people without steering wheels). I'd also suggest no driver aids allowed except for ABS.
What does everyone think? Add your suggestions/criticisms.1/4/2011 11:03:15 AM |

TKE-Teg All American 43410 Posts user info edit post |
If we're trying for any bit of realism a 10 lap race is way too short, especially for a field of near identical cars. I think a race duration of around an hour would be about right.
But that's my opinion. If most people feel otherwise that's fine. 1/4/2011 12:03:16 PM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
I don't want to tie up 2 hours racing a crappy miata on a single event. If we were using F1 cars or GT cars, then I could tolerate 50-100 laps. For underpowered cars, I'd rather have 5 short races on different tracks so that you could get a feel for which twwers are best on each track style. 1/4/2011 12:40:57 PM |

similar higher speed cars will put more emphasis on reaction speed and real driver skill. You can push a honda civic to it's limits without being a good driver, but you're not going to do the same with a 600+hp race car.
If you're worried about people having mismatched cars, then just set up the race to only allow the driver to pick between 2-3 default cars.1/6/2011 10:25:03 PM |

To a degree I see your point. However like I said before the higher the horsepower the more of a disadvantage it puts on the people that don't have a steering wheel and pedals. I don't know who has one and who doesn't but mine broke and I won't be able to replace it for a few months 1/6/2011 11:16:51 PM |

^^ it's a bell curve
only a really great driver will be able to take full advantage of a wonderful car, but also be able to squeeze every tenth of a second out of something with very little power
it's the performance cars in the middle, the ones that have some intrinsic speed but come up shy of knife-edge handling/power, that can hide driving deficiences ] 1/6/2011 11:23:10 PM |

I haven't been using a wheel for very long, but there are several tracks that I felt were easier to maneuver with a regular controller. I definitely felt like Monaco was easier to drive fast with a controller, but that may be due to the flimsyness of the table I clamp my steering wheel to.
If you switch your brake and gas controls to L2 and R2, the cars are a lot easier to control than with the standard layout. 1/6/2011 11:40:07 PM |
Specter All American 6575 Posts user info edit post |
^ agree with both of your points. i dont know why GT defaults to X and square for gas & brake when pretty all new modern racers (NFS, Forza, etc) use the trigger buttons.
i'm stuck in Aspec right now. I'm level 20 and Ive done everything through Expert except the All-Stars and Historic Racing events and I'm too broke to buy an LMP car. Why are you guys grinding so much? You can make millions easily by doing the online Seasonal Challenges. I'm at level 24 and am sitting on 4.5 mill at the moment, but I'm holding out to get a 787B which is 5.26 mill (ugh)...or a Sauber C6, the silver arrow would be pretty sweet.
I really do need to match the switch to R2/L2 for throttle/brake but it's still no substitute for a wheel. I played GT4 entirely with a wheel so having to switch back to a DS3 controller was a bit of an adjustment. It's just impossible to modulate the throttle for a 350+hp car with the damn X button. Which buttons do you use for shifting if not R2/L2?
As far as easily getting a fast car I've heard the easy ticket way is to buy a Corvette Z06 or ZR1 and do the Race Modification (costs around $200k I think). That gives you a badass race car that can win even the "Like the Wind" race.

yea did this last night to the ZR1 (race mods + fully tuned) to win the american championship or whatever (lvl 22 or 23 race i think)... can make 117k per ~5min race with it.
though winning the 'like the wind' with it is certainly possible, it's harder than the american race, and requires some tuning of the car.
and i've done most of the seasonal races... granted i've only gotten gold on the latest set. i should probably go back and try for 1st in the ones i haven't. i am glad they're adding those races though, otherwise i might lose interest with the game faster.

^Bonus Races 1 are gone. They expired on 1/6. I golded all of them. In Bonus Races 2 I've golded the Mini and Focus ST races, and have silver thus far in the RX7 race. I haven't tried the other two yet. Also, I did those races before all restrictions were lifted.
Lifting the restrictions was dumb in my opinion as it makes the challenges much much easier. I haven't even looked at the Bonus Races 3 (couldn't get on the PSN last night) but from the online chatter they seem to be fairly easy. Hopefully Kaz will change his mind again and add the restrictions for future races. 1/7/2011 1:50:49 PM |

oh, did they lift the restrictions on bonus race 2? makes them all much easier if so... i think i silvered all of them. maybe bronze on one.
bonus race 3 was really easy for that reason.. just boost your car a little bit more than your competition and you can sleep walk through it. i assumed they did it because of everyone whining about how hard the races were ha.
i also bet that they put the formula gran tourismo in the online dealership two weeks in a row (at least) because people were whining about not being able to do the FGT race because they couldn't find the car 1/7/2011 2:11:15 PM |
