damn I just got a 2006 STi and your story makes me nervous. I was driving in 6th a few weeks ago and going to pass somebody and I could hear a sputtering from my wastegate and there was kind of a thump and a jerk and the check engine/cruise control lights went on. The car still drove fine and then after a day the light went off so I didn't think much of it. The same exact thing happened again this week. My warranty only has 3 months worth of coverage so I'm gonna take it in next week (out of town currently). I'm thinking it's either the wastegate gasket (seems to be common w/ 2006's from what I've read) or possibly a fuel problem. I put injector cleaner in just to make sure and it actually made the light go off again. 12/11/2010 3:27:29 AM |

Did you just say wastegate gasket? there is no such thing on that car. and you got a CEL and did nto bother to get it checked? Ods are it was an overboost fuel cut code, but still. 12/11/2010 6:44:19 AM |

From what I understood the fuel cut code in the STis have always left something to be desired. I think I read they're actually the reason some of the '08s were blowing up early on. They released another map shortly after launch that changed the fuel cut a bit. 12/11/2010 8:38:28 AM |

+1 on overboost. air temperature compensation table needs to be adjusted 12/11/2010 10:37:08 AM |
Mark VII All American 2003 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah the whole fuel cut is meant to be over sensitive to keep it as safe as they could knowing people would do it. It becomes bad when any mod (inlet resizing, or an aftermarket up/downpipe/exhaust) combine that with some cold dense air and you will have overboost fuel cut. easily fixable with a small amount of tuning, and a different boost control (I personally like the GM as it is safe, and cheap) but any 3 port will do.
But wastegate gasket? really? 12/11/2010 11:24:26 AM |

lol no shit... although it does help down shifting instead of braking. I don't like to drive around people in the snow here i grew up driving a '67 S code mustang in the snow (390 4 speed posi-trac) I know how to drive, stop, slide and correct in the snow. And i don't drive fast, but i do enjoy myself when the roads are clear.

did not know there wasn't a wastegate gasket. I wish I could find the thread I got that info off of, maybe they were talking about an aftermarket external wastegate, I don't know.
I didn't get the CEL checked yet because I literally had no time to get it to the dealership let alone go without a car for however many days granted if my engine blows it will be a much worse situation.
So y'all think it's an overboost cut code? That makes sense. The car had a K&N intake and a Magnaflow exhaust when I bought it and I'm not sure if they previous owner just bolted them on or got it tuned. Do y'all think that Capital Ford (where I bought it) would be able to tune it or pay to have it tuned under the warranty or am I going to have to pay to get it tuned out of pocket?12/16/2010 3:52:56 PM |

I highly doubt that any dealer would pay for a tune. and odds are if ther eis no tune on those parts that woudl kick it into an overboost condition. But anytime your CEL comes on...get it checked, i do nto care if it is f'n autozone who scans it. it is not liek it is there for the fun of it. 12/16/2010 8:34:42 PM |

i think the wind makes it look/sound faster than it actually is. but at the same time it wasnt terribly slow. it helped that no one was on the roads (i had just come up that road so i knew no cars were parked). the car was a little sideways around that big bend. its just hard to tell in the vid.

lol. they are pretty darn easy. if you've got the SOHC engine. the DOHC one requires a "special" tool here and there and its just a pain. most folks just flat out replace the whole motor if they need to do headgaskets. its actually easier to take the motor out of the car than try to take the heads off in the engine bay.
if you've got big hands, taking the valve cover off is another job that seems as hard as taking out the motor. lol12/17/2010 4:51:03 PM |

The timing belt on the Forester called for like 2 special tools also, so what, I've rebuilt Porsche engines that called for like 18 special tools using a socket and wrench set from big lots (I think it was ~$26). I thought it was very neat, I kinda wouldn't mind driving one a bit longer, sounds all unique too. There's also a lot not to like, such as brake feel and overall crappyness...

Broken ringland on piston 4. Subaru is not covering it. The timing belt jumped, which is most likely due to the ringland, and there is a bent valve because of the timing belt. A big mess.

What is their reason for not covering a broken ring? That sounds ridiculous to me. 12/23/2010 2:39:27 PM |
BigT716 All American 3458 Posts user info edit post |
They're blaming the ring on a lack of lubrication. If anyone can give me proof that a ringland should still function sans lubrication then please provide it asap. I have until probably next Monday to keep Subaru's attention.
Basically they said that the jumped timing belt and valve is a clear sign that the car has been abused, which I see as just convenient for them, but I can't really prove otherwise. 12/23/2010 2:45:46 PM |

^^ Yeah, I don't know. I'd probably argue that the burden of proof for an "in warranty" vehicle is on them. If they don't have any proof that lack of oil caused the broken ring rather than the broken ring causing lack of oil I'd threaten legal action and blow them up on forums like NASIOC. They might act differently if they know that a couple thousand Subaru enthusiasts are following this issue and judging them on it. 12/23/2010 6:27:05 PM |
smoothcrim Universal Magnetic! 18966 Posts user info edit post |
wouldn't excessive ring play lead to high blowby and oil consumption resulting in the low oil condition, exacerbating the issue? seems if you could produce any kind of documentation about keeping your oil changed/filled to their recommended intervals, a low oil condition created outside their maintenance schedule should be their issue. beating on a car isn't a warranty voiding condition 12/23/2010 7:10:29 PM |
sumfoo1 soup du hier 41043 Posts user info edit post |
Ok low oiling may not cause that to break but a broken one will cause you to be low on oil in a hurry. 12/23/2010 7:36:21 PM |

I know lots of people that have had subaru warranty stuff, at least 3 engines, hell they paid me after the fact for a shop fixing my fuel line issues on my old Wagon. i see it no differently then when mitsu was denying claims for blown up evo trannys, or ford not replacing cracked 4.6 intakes, of Chrysler apologizing for the Avenger 12/24/2010 12:02:22 AM |

Subaru is good about honoring wheel bearing warranty on Legacies because it is a known problem.
We took the shop STi out last night for some Christmas eve road tuning. I mentioned previously that we were installing a BNR 18G. There was a last minute change to a Blouch 18G-XT with a larger 10cm^2 turbine housing. Last night I got the boost dialed in. It's peaking between 20 and 22psi and falling to 18-19psi by 7000rpm, all depending on gear, intake temps, etc.
The Grimmspeed 3 port solenoid is responding like every other rebadged solenoid made by MAC (AEM solenoid etc). I've still got a couple more boost control tweaks I want to do. It's got a conservative, reliable tune that is not intended to fully max out power. AFR is high 10's low 11's, total timing at peak load is about 12 degrees. Peak intake cam advance is 30 degrees. I also increased some of the sensitivity of the knock control system (I'll spare you all the details).
What's interesting and awesome about these 2.5 engines is how damn torquey they are with stock heads/cams and stock location turbo. 3500-5500 is really the sweet spot. With the STi 6 speed transmission the first three gears go by fast, almost too fast, and the engine always stays in its torque band as you bang through the gears. On the highway it moves but it certainly doesn't have that single-turbo-Supra rocket feel. This type of setup typically does low to mid 300s whp and high 300s torque depending on dyno and other conditions. It's a good daily-driver setup and certainly still controllable as long as you can keep off the rev limiter. 12/25/2010 12:11:26 PM |
