Yeah Russell, I def.want you to come back and we'll DEF be a top 25 team going into the 2011 season, and with our weak ass non-conference schedule the sky will be the limit for us, and making the ACC Championship game is in our grasp if we can get past FSU and MD!

Had a buddy say that since he graduated he doesn't have to declare and can also work out with NFL teams and still come back. I guess he would be a grad student if he came back.

He was a grad student this season. Err last season. The season that recently ended.

^^correct.

kind of a loophole. He doesn't have to declare for the draft today since he is still eligible and has graduated

im not so sure about that definite top 25 ranking

nate irving will be gone ... he's probably worth not getting 2-3 wins, but avoiding 2-3 losses

I don't think you can attribute that much to one player, especially not one defensive player. How can you say Nate Irving over, for instance, Terrell Manning is worth 2-3 wins unless we've lost 2-3 games by one play, and consequently plays that Nate Irving has

Nearly all of the games where Nate Irving has played very well, we won, but by a lot, not a little. GT 48-25, WF 38-3, WVU 23-7. The only game that we won BECAUSE of Nate Irving was FSU, and that was mostly luck (the game was lost because Christian Ponder bumped into another player on his team and fumbled the ball, not because Nate Irving forced a fumble). Nate Irving just happened to be there to recover it, and any defensive player could have done that.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nate Irving. He's pretty much my man crush. But I don't think he's worth 2-3 games.

I don't see how. Remember it's not just Nate Irving's value alone, it's the difference between him and the player who would be replacing him if he were gone. It might be fair to attribute 2-3 winning games to him, but how can you say his replacement linebacker wouldn't have made enough impact on the same games that they wouldn't have been won with him in instead? See my point?

I know Nate has a huge impact on the football field and especially putting pressure on the opponent's offense. If he plays a blitz they have to work hard to contain him and keep him from getting pressure on the QB, and that's a huge effect, definitely worth 2-3 games. But my point is that it's the difference between him and his replacement that you have to consider, not just his impact alone.

My point isn't that Nate's worth 2-3 wins -- he's not -- but that in your first post you took the definition of player value far too, I don't know, literally? Attributing value to single plays, forced fumbles and whatnot, ain't the point. Looks like you got it figured out now.

Anyway, walterfootball.com mock draft puts Nate at the tail end of the second round. That's a couple rounds higher than my uneducated guess would have been.

im not here to debate it, because either side can't be proven

someone said something about DEFinitely being a top 25 team, and even with him (i think we all agree if he didnt play this year, the season would have gone in a different direction), state was barely a ranked team at the end of the year

What you wanna bet that Russell Wilson comes back for another season (and shatters more of Rivers' records and gets his jersey retired) and Mike Glennon transfers (since I think he'll be graduated already)?!?! IIRC, he should have 1-2 years of eligibility left.

I love how everyone says that the only thing in our way for the acc championship game next year is maryland and fsu...

how soon we forget that we always play like dookie against clemson.. unc-ch is usually a close game (except that 41 pointer a few years back)...even though it is home
and there is always that "what in the world happened" loss usually

If Russell decides to come back, I think the team will have a very very strong bond and leadership that will help us win the games we are "supposed" to win.

The defense is higher than the sum of its parts when he is on the field. He was a major catalyst, and you can compare the numbers of the defense as a whole from last year vs this year and see that.

I wholeheartedly agree that the it is more than the sum of its parts. However, this year vs. last year is not a fair indicator. A lot of the players got better from last year to this year that influence that even if we didn't have Nate back this year.

this situation reminds me of the stuff in Amadeus ... Scaliari or whatever the guy's name was/teacher dude in Finding Forrester wanted to be a great composer like Glennon wants to be a great QB but RW is the more beloved guy that seems to want to focus more on baseball in the long run while MG is 100% football

Wilson does plan to attend Colorado Rockies spring training after being drafted by the team, but is also seriously considering playing a senior year of college football, the source said.

In his junior year with the Wolfpack, Wilson threw for a career-high 3,563 yards while tossing 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

With Wilson at the helm, N.C. State went 9-4 including a 23-7 victory over West Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl."

MG will be a redshirt junior, so unless he goes to a lower division he will have to sit out one year and only have one year to play....so, it is sorta pointless to transfer now, should of done it last year.

^^^ Saw those articles. It doesn't really sound like anything new, except that now it is official that he will not enter the NFL draft...not that I think many people were expecting that. I saw someone linked this article on twitter this morning (http://packinsider.com/2011/01/espn-report-russell-wilson-coming-back/) from Pack Insider with the title "Russell Wilson Coming Back?". The title seems pretty misleading since those articles on ESPN and WRAL seem to be saying that Wilson will consider coming back and a decision has not been made yet. But the Pack Insider people seem to draw a pretty optimistic conclusion from the ESPN article which really doesn't say anything new. Oh well...

If RW comes back (and I hope he does), I will feel bad for Glennon. By most accounts, he is a good QB and has good potential. But, being stuck behind one of the best QBs in NC State history has been a hurdle in his career. Then again...he could be another Jay Davis or Marcus Stone.

Yes, this situation is a perfect example of "one in the hand worth two in the bush"

As great as MG seems like he could be, you gotta take the two time 1st team all-ACC QB over him.

He'd most likely head to DII and bypass the year wait

I don't see any "big" program wanting to guarantee him a starter spot for only one season.

He's better off not transferring, sitting a year and getting one year in a system/coaching staff/players he's been around rather than sitting a year and starting over with a new team.

My assumption is based on him not transferring to DII.

As I understood it, MG would not have to wait out a year if he wanted to go straight to a D-I. He would just have to find a school that had a graduate program that State did not provide. Or something like that. The NCAA rules are so convoluted.

There is a waiver process for transfers. IF Glennon transferred, it would be up to the NCAA to decide if he was transferring for academic or athletic reasons. My guess is that they would not grant a waiver and he would have to sit out a year.

Reminds me of the Darian Durant/Matt Baker situation. Baker waited in the wings until his senior season and played pretty decently, even though UNC sucked as a whole. I think he ended up making it somewhere it in the NFL for a few years.
