just curious, how many conference losses did FSU have last year when they went to the ACC title game, 0?

Quote :
"last year we had two ACC losses going into the last game of the season and still had a shot at the ACC championship. All of these predictions before the second game of the year has even been played is just ridiculous. People were saying we had no shot at the ACC championship after we lost to VT last year. They said the same thing after we lost to Clemson. They were all wrong."

ding ding ding

and obviously i knew rally wasn't talking about the national championship, but his hyperbole of loss implications deserved a response of hyperbole.

The way I look at it is this is the most winnable game for most teams from our division. It's going to be hard to win the division should we drop a winnable game like this.

Of course, I prefer to and will just let the season play out but it would be a disappointing loss, nonetheless.

^ I wonder if a team has ever made the ACC Championship game after LOSING to a 1-AA (or FCS) team early in the year? I can't imagine it's ever happened. Wait? What? Virginia Tech last year?

^^ no one is saying we are going to win an ACC title. we are simply responding saying the season won't be over if we lose by citing last years results.

BlackJesus is obviously only here for intelligent discourse.

^ you could go a step further even and ask if VT actually won said championship game...

Look we are going to be HUGE (10 pts prob) dogs at FSU. That game is already written in dark pencil etchings as a loss.

We are prob going to be very slight favorites vs GT and BC.

We are probably going to be 1-3 pt underdogs against UVA, UNC, Clemson, and the Jews.

So if we lose the fucking Wake game, it's fucking over. Last year is irrelevant, we aren't nearly as good and our division isn't nearly as bad, period.

We lose this game, all that matters is UNC.

Luckily, it's a 50/50 game so we can win and keep the season alive.

face and them are right guys. Last year was different. Last year every team in our division sucked so we could afford to lose. We also could afford to lose more games because we had the tie breaker over FSU. Florida state aint fuckin around this year if you haven't heard. Many people have them as a national title contender. Even if we somehow beat them, our odds of not losing two games are slim. We do have a chance though if we beat them at their place.

I look at it from a combined probability point of view. Whats the most hopeful chance of us winnign at FSU? I'd say 1 in 4. that means 25%. If you compound that with the most hopeful chance of us only losiing one game more than FSU I'd say that one is 1 in 4 as well. That brings us down to 6.25% chance of winning the division and thats all assuming the liberty game was a fluke and we are as good as last year.

If we lose to wake that 1 in 4 chance of having only one more loss than FSU tunrs into something like 1 in 10. which means if we lose to wake, we have like a 2.5% chance of winning the division.

[Edited on September 10, 2011 at 10:19 AM. Reason : its very slim]

This is specifically for ^^^ you. Russell Wilson stuff stays in the Russell Wilson thread. If I start seeing that stuff in the game threads then you will enjoy a few games break from TWW. That includes comparisons of Glennon to Wilson and whatnot.

^ yes you did. that much is obvious.

No odds definitely matter. It's the most important factor.

I took NC State at 25:1 odds to win the division because statistical analysis websites had us as a top 25 team this year.

That doesn't look as likely after week 1, in fact we aren't in the top 25 anymore. It doesn't mean it's over yet though.

However, if we lose to Wake. It's over. That's not me trying to be cute, that's reality.

Wonderful article by the News & Disturber:

http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/09/10/1474936/wolfpack-still-haunted-by-demons.html

Quote :
"RALEIGH - Good N.C. State teams have lost at Wake Forest in the past 10 years, as have not-so-good N.C. State teams.

There have been close games and not-so-close games in Winston-Salem. The result has been the same the past four times the two Big Four teams met on Wake's home field and six of the past seven times: a Demon Deacons win.

The Wolfpack hasn't won at Wake Forest since 2001 and only once since 1997. The two teams meet for the 105th time today (3:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net) in Winston-Salem.

"That's a long time to not win at a place," said N.C. State senior tight end George Bryan.

So even though the Wolfpack (1-0) beat Wake 38-3 last season in Raleigh, it was State that spent the week trying to forget recent history.

Fifth-year Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien is 0-2 with N.C. State in Winston-Salem, and winless in all 10 of his Atlantic Division road games. His reasoning for the two most recent losses at Wake is simple: "The team that plays the best wins," O'Brien said.

In 2009, N.C. State lost 30-24, 38-18 in 2007 and 27-19 in 2005. Go back to 2003, and you're examining an unforgettable 38-24 loss in quarterback Philip Rivers' senior year in Winston-Salem.

Rivers' sophomore year brought a 17-14 win in 2001, the last time N.C. State beat the Deacs on the road.

Wake coach Jim Grobe is 5-5 against the Wolfpack with a 4-1 home mark. His predecessor, Jim Caldwell, won only 12 ACC games in eight years, but two came against State in Winston-Salem.

Both O'Brien and Wolfpack center Cam Wentz credit the overall strength of the Wake program under Grobe, who had the most successful three-year stretch in school history from 2006 to '08, winning 28 games, including the 2006 ACC title.

"They have had good teams, and they still have a good team,"Wentz said.

The Demon Deacons have suffered consecutive losing seasons, with a 3-9 finish last year, and opened the season with a tough overtime loss at Syracuse on Sept. 1.

They led 29-14 in the fourth quarter but allowed Syracuse to score the game's final 22 points en route to a 36-29 overtime loss.

Sophomore quarterback Tanner Price threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns to stake Wake to the fourth-quarter lead, but he injured his left knee and sat out the last 11 minutes.

Grobe was disappointed in how Wake responded when Price left the game, and backup Ted Stachitas (who started three games last year) came in.

"I thought that our intensity level really went down after Tanner's injury," Grobe said. "And that just can't happen."

Grobe said Price would be ready for today's home opener for the Deacs. Price, who threw for 1,349 yards in nine starts as a freshman with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions, impressed O'Brien with his performance at Syracuse.

"He was a freshman playing last year. He has learned from that," O'Brien said. "He looks like a whole different kid."

State held Wake's offense in check last year in Raleigh, for 188 total yards, and Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 300 yards and accounted for four touchdowns.

That was a redemption game for Wilson, who had struggled in the 2009 loss at Wake. Wilson's NCAA-record streak (379 attempts) without an interception ended early in N.C. State's six-point loss in 2009. He threw a second pick in the end zone with a chance to win the game late.

"It was a close game," said senior receiver T.J. Graham. "We had plays we should have made."

And for 10 years running, State has had the same lament after each visit to Winston-Salem.

How this game goes will hinge greatly on how well we can get to Price. Dude is on a bum wheel and if we can get him out of the pocket, he will make some poor decisions. Aside from that we just have to remember that we have to establish a running game to keep the pressure off of Glennon so that he can get in a rhythm. We do those two things, and we win this game.

I'm going NCSU 28 - 17 WFU

So, you're saying we had no shot at the acc title? So, you're saying we had no shot at the acc title BECAUSE we lost to VT and Clemson? Not winning the acc title =/= having no shot at the acc title. So, only one team has a shot at the acc title this year? Only one team has a shot at winning the Superbowl this year? I can go on and on, dumbass.

The point is, we still had a shot after losing to VT and we still had a shot after losing to Clemson. The only time we no longer had a shot was after we lost to Maryland. If this has to be explained to you then you are truly dense. The season isn't played in the heads of analysts all at once ONE FUCKING WEEK into the season.

I have no delusions that we will win the ACC this year. I think we are maybe a 7-5 team at best. But for some people to say the entire season is over after one acc loss(that hasn't even occurred yet ffs) is just stupid. If we do lose to Wake today, will those of you saying the season is over just act on it and cease to post in Sports Talk the rest of the year? No point in posting here any longer if the season is over.
