For those who like the 3D aspect, do you think RealD 3D or Imax 3D is better?

there have been comic book movies with good action scenes as well as good acting and a good script. The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Sin City, The Watchmen, Hellboy, V for Vendetta, etc. all did it much, much better.

^ Just to be clear, did you think Ironman and Ironman 2 were bad as well? I'm assuming it's just the style in which Marvel movies have been made.

I thought Iron Man was better (didn't see 2), but still too cheesy for my tastes.

if you can't see how dumbed-down the lines are, and how sub-par the acting is in the avengers vs. the dark knight, there's really nothing i can say

also i don't care enough to write an analysis

I hope not. The Fantastic Four was terrible. How would you make a non-cheesy movie about a green monster, a man in a flying iron suit, an unfrozen caveman WW2 soldier, and a thunder god joining forces to fight aliens?

Still, Fantastic Four? Care to draw any comparisons between this and Daredevil?

now that i think about it, it wasn't as bad as fantastic four. that movie was awful. it's more along the lines of transformers.

Seriously, you just said compared the dialogue in this movie to Transformers 2 and 3. I cannot describe how fucking stupid that makes you look.

I love Transformers. It is by far my favorite childhood series. However, what Michael Bay did to this franchise and how utterly HORRIBLE some of the acting was will always make these films less than what they could have been. HE HAD GHETTO TRANSFORMERS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE....

I challenge you to answer El Gimpy's question from page 5:

Quote :
"which lines were worse than "I'm directly below the enemy's scrotum"?"

this is a perfect example of how utterly stupid Michael Bay is. The dialogue in Transformers was some of the worst I've ever seen.

Spoilers?

There is this very brief shot which I loved. Its right after the carrier fight sequence is over. its a shot of captain America and iron man standing down in the damaged part of the ship. It looks llike its straight out of a comic. captain America up on the cat walk with iron man looking disheveled with the skynd sun behind them. Perfectly captures the moment in the exact right way.. Just like a comic book.

there are several sequences that have this affect

you can definitely tell that Joss Whedon knows comic book structure from his days doing the Astonishing X-Men

i changed my mind above

i can't remember anything particularly bad off the top of my head. it was all just so generic and lacked any real emotion, save for a few scenes. "How will you make them come back? Because we need them to". barf.

The dialog wasn't perfect, but I thought it was well done for what it was. They did have many cheesy lines spread throughout, but it all seemed to fit.

Well, all but one. When Iron Man says that he's bringing the party to the rest of them, Black Widow says "How is that a party?" in such an awkward way. Both times I saw the movie, this line just grated me because it just seemed so out-of-place and badly delivered.

I will agree about the nick fury line. Even though it was cheesy, it still fit with the universe and the source material.

maybe if optimus prime voiced it it would have warmed adultswims pantylines.

I didnt have a problem with black widows line.

An I particularly enjoyed the limited banter she had with hawkeye.

Yeah, The Dark Knight had similar lines. Still, they were executed better and used sparingly.

Amen to that. I thought the two big scenes with black widow (first with the Russian guys, and second with Loki) were REALLY well done. The actual lines being spoken were cheesy, but that was the whole point. You've got an aristocratic egomaniac on one end, and an assassin manipulating him on the other.

Those scenes did a really awesome job (for me) of establishing just how good an actress Black Widow is as a character, and in turn, establish how well acted it was by the real actress.

There were a handful of super-cheesy lines here and there, but for the most part the dialog in the movie was just very direct, concrete, thoughts-to-words interactions. It's definitely a different style to Batman, Watchmen, Sin City et al (where the dialog is overwhelming metaphorical, and multi-layered). But neither style constitutes bad ACTING. I can tell you that I was bored fucking senseless during many dialogs in the Watchmen, it was like "really? would anyone every REALLY speak like this?"

I enjoy both styles, but had Joss gone that way with The Avengers, it would have been a fucking train wreck. Can you imagine Iron Man speaking that way? Or Captain America? Or *shudder* the Hulk? Fuuuuuck no.

I think some people in this thread are confusing 'bad acting' with simple lines and a over abundance of 'primary' characters. All the other movies he mentioned have the time and the narrower scope to develop the characters and provide them with the screen time to put across a good character. It's like they are complaining that Stormtrooper #1922 did such a bad job with his line that it makes the movie horrible. The Watchmen was good but is far more 'highbrow' a type and form of comic. While the new Batman movies are narrow enough to allow good development and performances. This isn't a Citizen Kane, this is a Ocean's Eleven.

That said, you can argue all you want about how bad you think it is, the box office numbers indicate otherwise.

RT doesn't tell you how good the movie is, only how many people think it is good. A well made movie (even if not mind-blowing) should have a high score. So I'm not surprised that TDK and Avengers scored roughly even.

Having said that, Watchmen was not very good... and I really wanted it to be good.

The entire theater was going nuts at this scene. You couldn't hear it at all when Hulk said "Puny God" afterwards. I was laughing my ass off as well.

Oh wait, I misread and I thought you were talking about when Hulk handed Loki his ass. My bad.

I can totally understand that sentiment, honestly. It's not that I fully agree, but Watchmen was VERY stylized and that just doesn't appeal to everyone. Also, general awareness and knowledge of the Watchmen was way lower than things like Batman or The Avengers.

The Batman movies are well done and even though they have a darker style, they still appeal to a very broad audience. I think a lot of 25-45 year old guys like that dark style because it seems to have a little more "serious" feeling to it.

The Avengers lead-in movies and the Avengers have clearly taken a different stance. They are more lighthearted, aimed at a broader audience and are based on characters that were written as sardonic and silly in their comics. It's true to form.

I think it's pretty obvious, that if you go into something that is being marketed as action/humor expecting it to be something that is more serious, then you're going to be disappointed. To say this movie was in any way lackluster just demonstrates a lack of objective perspective on what it was intended to be. I feel certain that all the cheesy, silly things that happened in this movie were done intentionally. Like was said above, the box office does not lie in this case. It is the most successful movie of all time in an opening weekend. We'll have a chance this summer to see if The Dark Knight Rises can even hold a candle to it. I don't think it will unless the person playing Bane dies prior to release.
