That game was icing on the cake of one of the most successful days ever for team USA at the Olympics. What a freaking day!

srsly, they have three players with nba experience, two fo which were lottery picks. not saying nigeria is a great team but I do think some of you guys are seriously underestimating what an abnormally awesome performance team usa did tonight

I'm a bit sarcastic about the women's team, but Nigeria is horrible and has been the whole Olympics. They try to dribble straight from half court to the rim.

Agreed, across the board from prelim matches to medal events. A lot of gold medals today in stuff that actually matters, no 10 meter blow dart or synchronized walking medals, which seems to be where China gets all of theirs.

Where do yall rank Phelps among all time Olympians? Some would say he's the best ever due to his medal count, but I dunno. Maybe if he won gold medals in diving too he would be as versatile as some of the track guys

Who are some athletes who have medal counts close to what he has? And what events did they win them in?

Phelps is great, but I want to see someone win medals in completely different events. Like if Lebron also won the high jump and anchored the volleyball team with Blake Griffin. Give me some fucking variety.

its relatively easy to win multiple medals in a sport that you can compete in a dozen events

Right, to be to able to dominate the multiple disciplines for multiple games says something about the kind of athlete you are

Looking at the list for most medals won there are a bunch of swimmers, gymnasts and runners. All of which get multiple cracks at medaling.

How many Olympians have medaled in multiple sports? What did Jesse Owens compete in?

^^ I don't know about it being easy. But he definitely has more opportunities to medal. Especially compared to other sports. No question the greatest swimmer of all time and that's all that really matters.

He has the most total medals of anyone, and is the only one with double digit gold medals

Somebody like Carl Lewis won the 100m, 100m relay, and long jump in multiple Olympics

then you have somebody like Jesse Owens who dominated every track and field sport he competed in, in Nazi Germany as a black dude nonetheless, but then there were no Olympics for the next 12 years, so he didn't get the chance to add to his medal count

There was some swimmer back in the 60s (i think) who won a bunch of swimming events and also won a gold in water polo...thats fairly versatile

I don't know enough about Olympic history, if he isn't the greatest he is on a pretty damn short list.

i just think like decathletes are more versatile

that shit is no joke, 10 events, from running, hurdles, javelin, long jump, etc

thats why I said relatively. obviously its not easy to get a gold medal in any sport, but its relatively easy for a swimmer/gymnast/track and fielder to get multiple medals than say a basketball or soccer player

^16/20 golds. I know what you're saying. But its not like he won a bunch of bronze medals.

In general I think cross sport and cross era comparisons are dumb.

cross era comparisons have too many factors since world records are broken every olympics...like mark spitz might have been more dominant in swimming one olympics than phelps in 04, but in 08 phelps broke all his records

but you could argue if phelps is as good an olympian of the modern day as somebody like usain bolt, i guess

If you look strictly at the stats then Dan and Dave are the best Olympians ever.

Treetwista will agree because he still reads sports illustrated for kids and tears out the trading card inserts

i dont remember if it was Dan or Dave, but one of them completely failed in the one Olympics they competed in

did Arturo make a booboo? or did you venture out on your own with that stat error?

as far as olympic medals? obviously not, the numbers speak for themselves

as far as better olympic ATHLETES? absolutely

i respect swimming, it takes athleticism, pretty much all the muscles in your body

but Bolt is basically the fastest man ever (until someone else comes along and breaks his world records)

there is a huge difference between Olympian and athlete

one is quantifiable and the other isn't

your original argument was Phelps v. Bolt as the greatest Olympian of all time

OF

ALL

TIME

my original argument put Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens ahead of Phelps, arguably, for versatility

I simply used Bolt as an example of how you can compare different sports, of the same era

I'll admit to being wrong about the OF ALL TIME bit

but still, when you have a medal count and the goal of the Olympics is to win as many medals as possible, it's pretty easy to determine who is the greatest Olympian. past or present.

[Edited on August 3, 2012 at 1:56 AM. Reason : I'm drunk and knew it was wrong when I typed it]

its medals

and Jesse Owens won 4/4 golds, then the Olympics were cancelled for 12 years

so its not as black and white as how many medals you win

what if somebody wins 2 medals a year while only competing in 2 events for 7 straight Olympics? is that not as good as winning a bunch of swimming relay races over 3 straight Olympics?

[Edited on August 3, 2012 at 1:57 AM. Reason : i respect Phelps, just don't think he's the cut-and-dry GOAT]

its which Olympians "Olympic career" or abilities are the most impressive

i'll continue this tomorrow cause i'm about to go to sleep

but the goal in the Olympics is obviously to win as many medals as possible, preferably Gold

but it doesn't mean you're the best Olympian ever just because you win the most medals, it means you won the most medals

is Emmitt Smith the best running back ever because he rushed for more yards than Sanders, Brown, Sayers, etc?

there aren't medals awarded to running backs at the end of every season

beyond that, the NFL is nothing like the Olympics

otherwise he's Rafael palmeiro

it's not surprising that TreeTwista10 would be willing to argue that a sprinter with 3 gold medals is "as good an olympian" as a swimmer with 16 gold medals.

[Edited on August 3, 2012 at 3:45 AM. Reason : i guess that's not totally fair b/c bolt hasn't run yet, but even so it'd be 14 gold medals...]

I dunno about Bolt, but I'd put this guy in the ring with Phelps

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksandr_Karelin

Dude didn't get scored on for 6 years straight (which means he won an olympic gold without anyone even scoring a point against him).
