After basically every newspaper worth a damn in the state has criticized your previous hires at DHHS you go and add one more just for the hell of it. There is just no way to even comprehend the amount of tone deafness you need to think that is a good idea.

If it only takes $1,250 donation to get a $95,000 / yr job, that's a pretty incredible rate of return.

I'm sure she also raised money through the groups she was a part of, like the tea party or group that tells women they don't need abortions because Jesus (yes, a woman who was a board member of a shady pregnancy center is now a part of our state's DHHS)

I'd actually be ok if DHHS farmed out some of their work to some high powered consultant, a lot of times it makes financial sense and they are obviously struggling over there as all their "new initiatives" have been fiascos. The problem here for me is, unless the news reports are missing some part of her work history, this lady is going to be borderline useless and she is being paid outrageously for being politically appointed deadweight. Add to that all the other questionable appointments and it is just so blatant, it's like they think we aren't watching or we are all retarded - it's insulting to me as a tax payer.

Does McCrory not realize that every single one of these appointments are going to be a millstone around his neck in 2016? Is he that stupid? Where are his handlers?

http://www.wncn.com/story/23467797/dhhs-hires-anti-abortion-activist

I'm at a loss, with all the scrutiny of DHHS, McCrory is now worried the media is scaring away the other people he wants to hire

Quote :
"He also expressed concern that the reporting of details of recent hires might deter people from seeking jobs in government.

"I'm very concerned in hiring future people who want to come into state government for a temporary amount of time, the intrusion into their personal life by people, political operatives and others, that will distract people from wanting to be engaged in public service for a year or two," McCrory said. http://www.wral.com/dhhs-paid-chief-of-staff-37-000-severance-after-one-month-of-work/12909199/

-37,000

aleigh, N.C. — The Department of Health and Human Services paid Thomas L. Adams $37,227.25 as "severance" after he served just one month as chief of staff at the department.

His is the latest high-dollar salary to come to light at the agency responsible for overseeing Medicaid, food stamps and other human service programs. Hefty contracts given to politically connected executives and $80,000-plus salaries granted to younger staffers who worked for Gov. Pat McCrory's campaign have made news in recent weeks.

Adams' severance payment stands out even from those payments, particularly because he occupied an exempt position, meaning he could be hired and fired at will with little notice and no need for the state to give cause and no appeal rights.

"It's ridiculous," said Dana Cope, executive director of the State Employees Association of North Carolina. "It's a shame that DHHS is becoming the political patronage department of state government."

Adams' hiring was announced in a DHHS newsletter, describing him as having "extensive high-level management experience, having served as the chief executive of numerous professional associations across the country, including the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons."

Before taking the job, Adams, 62, was a registered lobbyist for the North Carolina Captive Insurance Association. He resigned his post as a lobbyist of Feb. 21, according to records at the Secretary of State's Office. Adams was reinstated as a lobbyist for the association on May 17, and current publicly available profiles list him as the group's president.

Phone calls and emails to Adams' home and office on Friday afternoon were not immediately returned.

I'm not really outraged by this, but its just another example of how crappy the administration of DHHS is. I guess DHHS officials are appearing before the NCGA today to answer some questions.

http://www.northcarolinahealthnews.org/2013/10/08/mccrory-administration-officials-suppressed-medicaid-data/

Apparently the new medicaid head edited out a lot of explanations and details from a medicaid report that detailed our recent cost overruns, instead opting to just throw her hands up and claim "its broken."

Quote :
"McCrory Administration Officials Suppressed Insight Into Medicaid

For months, members of the McCrory administration have maintained that the state’s Medicaid program is “broken.” But in the first of a two-part investigation, North Carolina Health News shows McCrory officials sat on information that would have depicted the state’s much-lauded Medicaid program in a better light."

Quote :
"The criticisms contained in the audit have yielded talking points used by Wos, Steckel and McCrory for the past eight months as justification for turning down a federal expansion of the program under the Affordable Care Act and proposing to privatize the program."

And apparently the person who made the edits now works for a company that could be bidding on any privatized version and stand to make money of this discredited report.

Also, there's this:

http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news%2Flocal&id=9283977

Quote :
"McCrory spending $230,000 on mansion bathrooms

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Gov. Pat McCrory plans to spend up to $230,000 in taxpayer funds remodeling bathrooms in his private living quarters at North Carolina's Executive Mansion even as he demands belt-tightening for public schools and social programs.

Planned upgrades include new marble, tubs and fixtures for six bathrooms on the upper floors of the Victorian-era home in Raleigh. The changes were included in a long list detailing $90 million in repairs and renovations to government buildings sent to legislative leaders last week by state budget director Art Pope. The $90 million was included in the state budget for the current fiscal year.

Department of Administration spokesman Chris Mears said the bathrooms were last spruced up in the 1970s, though he confirmed the facilities are still in working order."

I don't do much abatement in residential, but I do a lot of mold abatement, and I think that price sounds about right to abate and renovate 6 bathrooms. The Medicaid thing deserves a lot of attention though.

The whole medicaid thing is a debacle.

The company that once held the contract, and operated it pretty well for a number of years. A competitor won it away, and if you listen to hallway rumors, it was do to an insider in the Purdue administration personally favoring a higher up at the company that won it.

Just rumors though.

I have also heard that the new folks are running it into the ground, and that it is a cluster.

This isn't directed at you, but rather, whomever made that comment or people that may agree with them. Is it more or less different to encourage a 12 year old to talk about their future voting rights than it is to have kids hold up "Abortion is Murder!" signs or one declaring how "God Hates Fags!"?
