Its a good thing they had the tournament in Greensboro so we could get this lovely sellout.

By far the worst venue of every major tournament.

By far the worst city of every major tournament.

Hell, the high mid majors even have better tournament locations.

Clemson vs. Florida State at 9pm on a Thursday would have people lined up around the block at Madison Square Garden

we should hold it in New York City, so students from the #1 seed in the conference only have to drive 20 hours to see their team play

I mean seriously, Greensboro is in the middle of nowhere. It's totally unaccessible to ACC fans, especially the NC fans, whose teams have won 50 of the 59 ACC tournaments.

not supposed to be homecourt for the best team but its a conspiracy to have it for unc. the tournament was fine moving around. I enjoyed spring break in tampa much better than DC or atlanta anyhow.

TT10 does not know what he's talking about. Theres no way having a tournament in the middle of nowhere can be good for the conference. might as well have it in the dean dome.

Atlanta
Chicago
Vegas
Greensboro
NYC
DC
Kansas city

Which of these does not belong?

definitely a conspiracy for UNC since Duke has won it like 9 of the last 10 years or something

also lets hold it in NYC so its a home game for Syracuse every year

and i dont have any problem with it rotating around between various cities, whether Greensboro, NYC, etc

Bilas is the one who, earlier this week, said it should permanently move to MSG

Jesus, how much money do the refs have on this game? They have dragged Clemson right back into this despite the tigers trying desperately not to get closer.

Why would you make it close for the schools whose fans are going to come if you have it in Pyongyang? Its a bad business model.

well, Chicago, Vegas and KC don't belong in the ACC tournament discussion

E Man wants it to rotate back and forth between Panama City and Daytona Beach, because its all about Spring Break!!

Florida State has a good shot at beating UNC, in my opinion. A little worried about our game, but I think we'll pull it out.

If you have to play it safe and have it in NC, then have it in Charlotte which is nice and not much further.

Theres also solid choices like

DC
Atlanta
Tampa

which are all proven

And you could always experiment every once in a while with an venue you don't know how it will turn out...

Miami?
Boston?

With the new teams added you could play around with Brooklyn and Indianapolis.

Just don't have it in Greensboro unless they magically build a state of the art facility or magically become something that resembles an up and coming shitty city and not a dumptown.

The fuss is because it is normally in Greensboro which sucks as a venue, destination and attendance has faded to terrible over the years because I'm pretty sure people are tired of taking vacation time and flying to a shithole every year just to watch 1 basketball game.

I agree with Charlotte, and would love to have it in Charlotte more often, because I would go to it more since I live in Charlotte...but I don't think having it in NC is "playing it safe" as much as making it the most easily accessible to the entire conference...sure its close to the Big 4, but its also about as close for Miami as it is for BC...although Greensboro has a larger arena than Charlotte

DC and Atlanta are other good choices...Tampa is not...Tampa is in SEC country, and more importantly, had terrible attendance when they held the tourney there...but DC and Atlanta are good options...because not only are they large cities, but they're relatively centralized for all ACC schools' fans to travel

Miami and Boston might be ok to try once, but they're too far-end on the geographical spectrum...it takes 20 hours for Miami fans to drive to Boston...20 hours for BC fans to drive to Miami...it makes much more sense to hold it in a city like Charlotte, Atlanta, DC than Miami or Boston, though holding it there once to see how it goes wouldn't be a big issue

Brooklyn (or MSG) will happen with the new northern schools and the death of the Big East...but it will become a novelty quickly imo...in Greensboro, the ACC tournament is a huge event...in MSG or Brooklyn, its just another event

i don't get your beef against Greensboro...is it strictly because its not a large metropolis? Or do you think UNC somehow gains an advantage there that Duke, State and Wake don't have? The conference was founded in this area...despite all the expansion, I'm glad the tourney still preserves a little bit of the tradition thats rapidly leaving college sports

unlike Miami or Boston/NYC, people can actually drive to Greensboro...and attendance hasn't dropped from Friday-Sunday as far as I know

With the dawn of the airplane, people don't have to drive.

Still was MUCH higher than Greensboro's attendance numbers. Remember, I am arguing AGAINST having it in Greensboro.

With air travel, all of these are relatively similar. Greensboro is actually a bit more complicated being a smaller airport. Sure its great for the people in the triangle to not have to take off work and sleep in their own bed but thats about it.

Have you been to greensboro? List the top 5 reasons to visit greensboro besides this tournament.
How many games have you watched from the coliseum. Where does it rank in terms of venues in acc country? The answers to that question is what make it the worst possible choice. I'm not sure I could come up with a worse place. Even Greenville would be arguable.

Yeah attendance is laughing stock material for the last several years. Tampa is actually one of the higher average attendance of the historic venues.

In reality most alumni, have to take off work and travel to greensboro, get a hotel that they should probably book in advance which means they will end up spending a few days there. It would be nice to be in a nice place. Most of my Miami alumns do not consider going simply because its a waste of a vacation to be there. The 2 good restaurants are impossible to get to and theres no good entertainment period.

The Big West tournament is in Anaheim, less than a 15 minute drive from the #1 seed's campus. No one showed up except for the players' moms.

Sure the Big West cares more about soccer than basketball, but they are getting nothing back for using a full size professional arena. MSG would be a waste for us, too, since the Syracuse and BC fans will not make up for losing all the tobacco road fans and the decent number that come from Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Definitely would prefer Charlotte though.

^ I would rather go up to NYC for four days to watch State play and fuck around than Greensboro.

I liked going to the ACC tournament when I was a kid and didn't have shit to do but watch basketball and run around like a maniac in Four Seasons mall. This year I had a friend that asked me if I wanted to go and I was like..."meh". Who wants to spend 4 days in Greensboro?? I'd go up for a Saturday/Sunday if our team was good...but Thursday and Friday are pretty much worthless and then you're trying to find something to do in the off-time.

Greensboro is a shithole, no doubt. But attendance and location are great. No one cares if Joe TWWer doesn't want to go. How is this a discussion?

They should just have it at PNC and change the court. Would State really have that much of an advantage? It would still be full of UNC and Duke fans.

I know people who drive to Greensboro each day for the games then drive back

Not everyone has to allot a 4-day window, book a flight, book a hotel, etc

Since its so close to everyone

I still don't see how Greensboro makes more sense than chapel hill or raleigh. You get a bigger, better venue and are closer for everyone.

Instead of picking, the best star studded year to compare, lets compare venue Averages

Greensboro: 85,761
MCI: 101,505
Philips: 117,120
Bobcats: 120,210
St. Pete Times: 133,614
Georgia Dome: 170,323

Georgia Dome attendance fell sharply the last time but basically people want to go to Florida this time of year anyway so you had people who weren't even major fans going in Tampa. Lets not pretend Duke State or UNC fans won't show up if they can't drive. Acc fanbase expands when you bring the tournament to new places.

[Edited on March 15, 2013 at 12:35 PM. Reason : you're cheating yourselves by putting it near the 3 best traveling fanbases. ]

pretty sure the only reason BC even won yesterday was a lucky career night (day) by hanlan. They are a terrible team, and should have lost to GT.
