In case anyone has issues downgrading service, here was my fun frustrating TWC conversation:
I called in to drop my plan from Ultimate 300/20 to Turbo 100/10 (since the SB6141 "Maxx" is capped there).
Of course I got the run-around, and he was very pushy with his generous "let me help you out here" offer that they'd lease me the SB6183 for ONLY $8/mo and I could get the higher speeds without buying a new modem and risk of it breaking because I knocked it onto the floor, spilled something on it, or LIGHTNING!
Because I just leave my modem on my dining room table plugged directly into a sparking wall socket??
It took 20 minutes of me convincing him that I really wasn't interested in the 300/20 and I was happy with my modem at 100/10 and would he please just drop my plan so I would pay $45/mo.
So then he tries to tell me "OK so for $45/mo that's the Standard plan, which is the same 50/5 speed that you're used to, and that's probably best because you don't even know if your modem can handle the higher speed than that". Stop, my modem can handle 100/10, as I told him, and I don't want the Standard plan.
I then explain to him the pricing on the website says $45 for Turbo and that's the price I want. His stock response is of course that those are promotional rates, and I calmly explain that nothing online states it is promotional. To which he has the BALLS to say, that it's "like the end of commercials when they talk really fast, or when there's fine print and you really should be paying $95/mo for Ultimate but you're not" ... I respond with: "Please show me where your actual prices are posted, because right now I hear you saying fine print, but all I'm hearing is misleading and false advertising followed up by your bait-and-switch tactics when I call in to change my service."
He tried to say the same thing again (!!!) and I repeated myself, then said, "please direct me to someone that can give me the price that is advertised as the actual price." We then had the same exchange again.
He paused for a minute, then said he needed to ask me a few general questions and maybe there would be an offer that we were eligible for. Good job, buddy, good job.
All he asked was the ever-so-standard question of "what do you use the internet for", to which I gave the ever-so-standard answer of "email, web pages, Netflix and Amazon Video" ... a little extra jab at the end for you, TWC.
A minute of silence later and ... Of course, he is SO surprised and happy to report that there is an offer available for me of Turbo at $45 ... WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT??
And please respond accurately to the survey you'll receive within a few days of our conversation. Heh.
TL;DR: If TWC gives you the runaround while downgrading, be patient and persistent--same as it ever was. 11/10/2015 10:42:33 AM |

Said fuck it and just bought an SB6183. Directly to the modem, I'm tapping out at about 240/25 (on Ultimate). Hardwired through the router (TPLINK WDR3600 N600), about 180/25. I was originally at 80/20 until I flashed with a newer DD-WRT build and disabled QoS (despite setting maxes to 300/30). Should I really expect that large of a dropoff through a wired connection, or what else should I be looking for? I suppose a straight LAN test is in order. 11/10/2015 12:03:31 PM |

I have a fairly beefy new modem with the new AC wireless standard and all that jazz so I cant imagine that is the problem. Basically if I get the new modem and I cant get near the 300/20 I will also be calling to drop down to 100/10 and just save some money. 11/10/2015 12:49:40 PM |

I have an SB6141 and Netgear R8000 (Nighthawk X6) and came home tonight to my internet not working. I have also been having problems recently probably due to configuration changes on TWC's equipment so I rebooted everything and ran a speed test. I got 118/12, up from about 37/6 previous to tonight. Based on what I'm reading, it seems that's about all I'm going to get with the current "Extreme" plan I have now, right?

Still getting 60/6 both through the router and direct to the modem. They said the upgrade would be done by today so I guess we will see when i get home tonight. Otherwise, they lied to me or my current modem can't break 60/6 which would be convenient since that's what I have been getting for over a year now. 11/12/2015 8:37:26 AM |

you can roll your plan back to turbo, you are limited to that by your modem

I have the extreme which should be 300/20 now. Once they say the actual upgrade has gone though if I am not getting at least 150 maybe even 200 down I will drop back to at least the 100/10 plan. I have had the 50/5 for a while now so I am used to those speeds so might even drop back to that. 11/12/2015 1:50:15 PM |

i remoted in to my home modem and reset it from the browser interface and still got the same old speeds, do i need to power-cycle it to get an update or if it was live at my location would simply resetting it online have given me the new speeds? 11/12/2015 3:36:24 PM |

Came home and tested and now I get 115/12 both with a router and direct to modem so gonna have to wait on new modem to arrive to see what I get. Had a friend tell me he was only paying for the 30 down plan and is getting 250 down now so maybe some people will get lucky? haha 11/12/2015 4:57:09 PM |

According to the graphic below, 30/5 is Extreme and I should now be getting 200/20. And according to the specs on the SB6141 it should handle a download speed of 343Mbps with 8 download channels so unless TWC is doing something stupid on their end and throttling the speed per channel then I should be getting a full 200 down.

yeah, it only supports 100 down https://www.timewarnercable.com/en/enjoy/better-twc/internet/internet-modems.html
and since your modem only supports 100 down, you should downgrade to the Turbo plan (now Ultimate 100) 11/13/2015 8:33:20 AM |
NCSUBBM All American 744 Posts user info edit post |
Well, according to this: http://www.surfboard.com/products/sb6141/ it will do 343 down so that goes back to my point about TWC limiting the bandwidth per channel or something.

Or I can get maybe $40-50 out of my SB6141 and put it towards a $98 SB6183 and get closer to 200/20 which is what I'm paying for. I imagine that will be much easier than dealing with TWC on downgrading my service considering I'm getting a promotional price right now.11/13/2015 8:52:08 AM |

Why not just get that TP-Link for 60 bucks on amazon? If you have T-Mobile you can get one for 25.00 or if you have Sprint you can get one for $Free. 11/16/2015 7:36:27 PM |

^^I have Ultimate 300 from TWC and am currently maxing out around 190Mb/22Mb on that TP-LINK. Direct to modem is around 280/22. Swapped all ethernet cables, updated firmware (currently on an October build of DD-WRT), ensured QoS is off, and still no luck. I'd be curious to know if anyone with that router is hitting 300.

I'll hang up and listen. Thanks 1/8/2016 6:23:44 PM |

For me it's mainly the fact that Comcast only offers 10mbps upload with their "blast" internet package. Their "Extreme Internet" package is like $200+ a month and it still only offers 25mbps upload. They even tried to get me to stay by offering Extreme for $105 a month but I told them Century Link is offering me 1000mbps upload for $96/month. If Comcast offered 150/150 for a reasonable price I'd probably take it but they don't offer anything faster than 25mbps.
As far as upload goes it's nice to be able to transfer files, host a game server, stream media, host a vpn/ssh server all from your own home.
For download if I want to try out a new 40gB+ game then I don't have to sit around waiting for it to download. Same thing with movies, etc.
Plus it's the principal. I've been wanting to say FU to Comcast for a while. Listening to the sales lady agree that Century Link offered better service for a better price was music to my ears. 1/8/2016 7:53:14 PM |

From reading earlier posts, it appears as though TWC only allows either 4 or 8 channels to be utilized which prohibits maximizing the modem's potential. I would like to hope that Google Fiber will allow you to actually use your equipment properly. 2/19/2016 9:08:36 AM |

Reading the comments on Woot, the only concern would be if TWC switches to DOCSIS 3.1, that's not happening any time soon in Raleigh is it? 7 months would be the break even point, seems worth it. 2/19/2016 9:28:53 AM |
