Hes got the worst rebounding rate of any big man ive ever seen. Can you think of anyone ever who was worse?
Tyler Lewis is a better rebounder. Seriously 12/19/2013 8:39:14 PM |

^i don't think he's really played enough minutes to get down on the big fella about it. He'll come around. As conditioning gets better he will be in better shape to fight for good position 12/19/2013 8:45:07 PM |

He rebounds one of every 20 missed shots on defense. My guess is hes being too aggressive trying to block everything and not getting position for rebounds. His block rate is legit though. As is vandys 12/19/2013 8:54:22 PM |

Um, yeah. Averaging 1.6 blocks in 12 mpg is legit.
Anya does a very good job of boxing out. Seems like he'd rather box out his man and allow another Pack player to get the rebound. Can't really fault him for that. 12/19/2013 11:18:27 PM |

I did some quick research. The other 9 players on the court are 88% more likely to get a rebound when Anya is on the court
you can't deny he's making an impact 12/19/2013 11:22:23 PM |

I am excited with the way all three freshman big man played. If they keep developing like that throughout the year we could be in for a pleasant surprise season. 12/20/2013 6:05:31 AM |

Tennessee's defense against Warren was fantastic. He was covered up for most of the game. He still got a double-double, but he lost his head a little bit and got tired and visibly frustrated. They forced him into some turnovers and to take some poor shots.
I don't know what happened with Barber's 2 turnovers against the full-court press. Maybe it was nerves or a lapse in focus, but it surprised me.
I didn't like Washington shooting a deep jumpshot late in the 2nd half. He's shown that he has some range, but it's not the shot we want with less than 10 mins to go in the game.
I thought Gottfried put Lewis in way too late at the end of the game. It was an obvious foul-situation for Tennesse and they were doing a full-court press. Get another ball-handler on the floor who is also your best free throw shooter.
I don't like us running the Scott Wood play. It was good when we had Scott, but it hasn't worked this season. Warren is too slow, and no one else can hit a running catch-and-shoot fadeaway 3-pointer. 12/20/2013 10:05:40 AM |

I felt like most of the positive observations have been already mentioned, so I didn't want to rehash them.
I admired Lee's tenacity. He got stuffed on a dribble-drive to the basket, but he didn't let it get to him. A few minutes later he tried again and converted - clutch shot late in the game.
I was surprised how well our young team performed under pressure on the road in the second half. Dakich was right about Tennessee making a surge after halftime. I expected us to fold and get into foul trouble and give up our big lead and lose the game. Kudos to the team. 12/20/2013 11:12:20 AM |

Vandys rebound rate was like double beejays in his worst season.
Anya has a historically low rate. Figured rebounding would be his strength not his biggest weakness 12/20/2013 8:13:47 PM |

hating on Anya is pointless. he's gotten limited minutes since the season began. but seeing what he can do in this game was hopefully a preview of what we can expect to see for the years to come. some of those blocks he had were disgusting. i love having a solid recruited big man like him on our side for a change 12/20/2013 9:19:08 PM |

Its not hate I just think its strange that hes on pace to be one of the worst rebounders ever given his size and athleticism.

1 steal > 1 rebound > 1 block
A steal is a denial of an opponents possession plus a new possession. A rebound is a new possession. A block doesn't guarantee a new possession. 12/22/2013 12:16:10 AM |

You can't discount the psychological effect of a block though. Remember Kansas from a couple of years ago? 12/22/2013 12:51:09 AM |
The E Man Suspended 15268 Posts user info edit post |
A steal happens when the offense makes an error or your teammates create the opportunity. The possession may or may not have resulted in a scoring opportunity anyway.
A block happens after your teammates make a mistake and the opponent has succeeded at getting a scoring opportunity. The block not only erases mistakes but directly denies the scoring opportunity. A block has a lingering psychological affect on the opposing player for the rest of the game.
A rebound is necessary but does not necessarily affect the game. Missed boxouts (negative) or offensive rebounds are more valuable than regular rebounds that the team should get everytime.

sounds like the kind of drivel that someone who relies on the Eye Test would quote
all the real sports fans know that everything can be quantified in the box score
starting shooting guard found out his girlfriend was pregnant during shootaround? 6th man has a stomach virus? point guard takes a hard elbow to the mouth in the opening minute and isn't as aggressive the rest of the game? all bullshit. it's all about the equations and formulas for stats12/22/2013 1:14:11 AM |

Quote : | "Vandy is making 71%. His offensive rating is 146, which is off the charts. Now that Vandy can catch the ball without turning it over half the time (2 turnovers in 6 games), he's a legitimate weapon.
We should try to feed it to Vandy down low more often, rather than settling for long jumpshots and wild slashes to the basket which won't work against the better ACC teams." |
Nice to see that they took my advice. Cat should be looking to dump it off to Vandy every time he drives to the hoop.

^^We don't feed it to vandy (if you mean post him up), and under no circumstances should we. He is doing a perfect job of being near the basket when TJ and Cat break down the defense.
He knows his role and is doing it well and is not trying to do shit he can't do. 12/22/2013 5:16:21 PM |

^^ that's true, but it also explains what happened at a point in time and is probably a more reliable way of predicting future outcomes. the occasional instances when mathematical predictions turn out to be wrong shouldn't be used as a complete indictment against them under all circumstances, especially when the alternative is to tout the superiority of the eye, which has a brain behind it that can choose to dismiss things it doesn't like to see. 12/22/2013 7:16:29 PM |
