Woeck was pulled early in his start at Clemson. He was in street clothes at the Friday game, so they were probably resting his arm this weekend.

I keep hearing the run support argument, but I'm having a hard time with it. I mean, we are definitely doing bad because we don't have run support, but why then are our other pitchers doing so much better than Rodon in terms of win-loss? He's 3-6 right now, E. Peterson is 3-2, Jernigan is 4-3, and Stone and Woeck are 3-1. Rodon is our only pitcher with more loses than wins. Can somebody explain that to me?

Other teams throw their ace on Friday too. It's harder to score against better pitchers. I mean he still has a ~2 era, it's definitely not his fault

Okay, so basically it's that all of our pitchers are good, but every team has that one pitcher that's better than us (counting our run support).

every other team has atleast 1 pitcher that can completely shut down our offense is more apt. No pitcher we face is better than Rodon. However, if our offense is that much worse than their offense it doesn't really matter how good he is.

with a ~2 era he should not be losing more than he's winning, however with suspect defense behind him and no offense at the plate he's getting hosed.

2-0 is a loss just like 14-13 is a loss.

Okay, that makes sense now. But then why are our other pitchers getting so many more wins? If the team (run support and defense) are doing so poorly, then how are our other pitchers able to win games?

I mean, would there be that big of a difference? Our second, third, etc. pitchers are that much better than their pitchers? I mean, Rodon's stats definitely show that he is good, but how can we explain the discrepancy between the team, his win-loss, and all of our other pitchers win-loss?

Genghis John, I understand that Rodon is not getting help from the rest of the team, but I'm having trouble understanding how all of our other pitchers can be doing so well if they are playing with the same people who are playing against the same teams.

I know that Rodon is really good, but it's hard to understand why he can't get us wins if the other pitchers can.

yes. basically.

it is extremely difficult for college teams to field multiple elite pitchers. In fact, just last year, UCLA used two of the top 10 pitchers in the country to pitch them to a NCAA championship.

the drop off from most teams "ace" to their second pitcher is generally quite large.

Take A&T. the first time we played them they pitched their number one start against us. He held us basically scoreless through 5 innings (i think we maybe scored 1-3 runs on him) then they pulled him and we exploded for many runs and won the game in lopsided fashion. Even tho we basically sucked the D against their first pitcher, we got to the rest of them and crushed them.

You see it all the time in the pros as well. Sometimes when you have a great pitcher with an average offensive team they tend to hit worse when the great pitcher is starting as they feel more confident they don't need as many runs to win. IMO its a coaching thing.

For the Rodon W-L argument, you can't really discount how bad the defense has been behind him. For whatever reason it seems to be at its worst when he is on the mound. He's pitched about 20% of the total innings for the team. On the season we've given up 28 unearned runs according to the stats on GoPack. 16 of those were credited to Rodon.
