Turner had a hell of a game. Dez Lee was the heart of the team and Barber made some nice plays. Washington also brought the energy.

Great defensive performance from Dez Lee tonight. Best game I have seen from him since early in the season. Oh yeah, good shooting from Turner in the 2nd half obviously. 1/20/2014 11:07:45 PM |

Not to sound too optimistic after an ugly win, but this is the kind of game that can turn a season around. We didn't get lucky out there; we just out-played them without our best player.
With Turner hitting shots and Lee providing some leadership, maybe TJ won't feel like he has to do everything himself out there. I still think we need to play him at the 4 and keep Dez and Turner on the court together, along with one of the PGs. We'll see though.
Eitherway, great game. 1/20/2014 11:10:31 PM |

^^^^^It's not going to turn the season around. This is one of our 6-7 ACC wins. We played better against one of the easier teams on our schedule, just as we played well against our easier OOC opponents.
Sometimes we will deviate from our average level of play, but the end is still 6-7 wins.

If Lee can develop a jumper and have better control when driving to the basket he can become a valuable player on offense. His defense has been solid overall this season. Also, how many here think that Warren and Gottfried planned to surprise the team with the last minute stunt before the game? I don't recall Warren having any type of ankle injury once the Duke game was over. I think they wanted the team to stop playing like pansies and it seemed to ignite something in them the second half.

Dez Lee's hustle and defensive pressure does not make up for his out-of-control offensive "moves" that routinely result in a loss of possession. Frankly, it's embarrassing.

Some players deserve it. Lets take Pete Thomas for example. When you have double the ints compared to touch down passes then you deserve to get a little heat. Its like an employee costing their business twice the money they're making them... its just bad.1/20/2014 11:28:18 PM |

I like the Washington and Anya combo inside. Washington can actually contribute some offense, stretch the defense a bit, and has improved his rebounding, while Anya definitely alters the other team's inside game the most. Freeman is still our best defender though (especially against stretch forwards) and the other three have to get better at boxing out. Vandy's last couple rebounds were scary and he didn't even have to fight anyone off. 1/20/2014 11:44:00 PM |

Vandy is so uncoordinated and lost sometimes, on defense. He seems ok on offense, which is why we fell in love with him for 10 games earlier this season. But man he was struggling on some possessions tonight. And not just allowing a million offensive rebounds, but usually when he hedges out 35 feet from the basket to distract the ball handler like a pesky fly with long arms, he kind of hustles back down towards the basket before his man gets too easy of a dunk. He played pretty poorly tonight.
I do think he should get some more touches on the low post though. He should'nt be a primary or secondary or even tertiary scoring option or anything. But we have to mix up the offense some, especially with more and more teams playing zone. He's a decent shooter from about 7 feet and closer. And if he makes a hook shot or two, it could open up some passes to guys like Turner outside for open looks.] 1/20/2014 11:47:11 PM |

He's out of control sometimes, but he was the only player besides Cat who could create his own shot tonight. He also shot 11 FT's tonight because he attacked the basket (he made 8). Nobody else was even close to his number of attempts ... i think Barber was behind him with 4.
In short, he's not great but he's all we've got right now. So just deal with it.

Realistically, we're headed for 8 ACC wins. We'll be favored in our home games against GT, Wake, UNC, Miami and BC, as well as favorites on the road against VT. We'll be pushes @ Miami and Clemson, and we'll have winnable games against FSU and at UNC. If these guys hit their stride in February, 9-9 is not outside the realm of plausibility.1/21/2014 1:54:07 AM |

i think most juco guys who arent nba prospects or were somewhere else before getting kicked off a team take a little while to adjust to big time basketball. sometimes it takes a year. iirc FSU had that guy with the dumb name and he sucked his JR year before having a great SR
dez has a lot of trouble finishing which is kind of a problem when he cant shoot but i'm optimistic he may be better next season. 1/21/2014 2:01:53 AM |

Maryland is terrible on the road this year.
For season in away games(not neutral courts), they are now 1-6. These 6 losses include losing margins of 16, 20, and 24. The only away game they've won this season was @BC, and BC is having a pretty off year so far.
This is one of those games where we would have won with Warren, and it's impressive that we won without him, but let's not blow this out of proportion. We beat a bad team at home without our best player. Glad we got the W, but I don't expect Turner to shoot 19 times a game or hit 5 3's. I also don't expect most of our opponents to shoot 31% overall and 38.5% from the FT line. We have a long way to go, but at least this was an inch in the right way. 1/21/2014 9:04:17 AM |

^^ I like seeing that shit. Doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but its comforting to see that it appears everyone gets along (didn't see Lewis sulking in the corner or anything).
Maryland does suck, but we desperately needed this win to keep any hopes of a tourney bid alive. 1-5 is pretty much an impossible hole to climb out of. The fact that we won without TJ and after playing one of the worst halves of the season only makes it better.
The team has talent...they just struggle to play consistently well every night, which is to be expected for a team so young. 1/21/2014 9:46:58 AM |

The one major thing I didn't like about last night's game was how our perimeter defenders would leave their man to help double down low...leaving their guy open for a three. Maryland hit a few, but they also missed their share of wide open threes. Until an opposing big guy starts crushing it on the inside, I don't think we need to play help defense. Vandy and Anya are more than capable defenders. They'll have some buckets scored on them, but they don't need help defense...especially not when it's at the cost of an open three.
That was the only thing I didn't like "schematically" last night. I also don't like how both of our big men always go for a block, leaving their men open for an easy putback. But they're young and I know that's a hard habit to shake...CJL never stopped doing that. I remember one play where both Anya and Washington went for the block, leaving two Maryland guys wide open for the putback. That was a little overkill. 1/21/2014 10:00:05 AM |

Mark Gottfried and Mark Turgeon were both hired the same year. While NC State's hire was met with laughter, "Top 10 Job" Maryland was thought to have hit a home run by stealing Turgeon away from A&M and paying him more than Gottfried.
Gottfried is now 2-1 (lost 50-51) against Turgeon in the ACC and took his team to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons while Turgeon's best season resulted in a trip to the NIT. Gott's ACC finishes: T-4th and T-4th, while Turgeon finished 8th and 7th. Turgeon also had one and a half seasons with a center who ended up being a lottery pick whereas Gott's highest/only draft pick (Brown) was selected at the end of the 2nd round." |

I've been beating the Turgeon/Gottfried drum for a while. Ehen MD hired Turgeon and we hired Gottfried Turgeon had a worse career to date but was lauded as a great hire for god knows what reason. He inherited a lottery pick center and Terrell Stoglin and did jack shit with them. Really, two things come out of it:
1) The national media is fucking deluded for thinking Maryland is a good job. They're no better a program than us, or Cincinnati or a bunch of other programs that may have at one time been good but those times were all before kids who are playing today gave a shit. Their location is supposedly prime recruiting grounds but that doesn't mean shit. Illinois isn't a great job because of Chicago. No one from the DMV area wants to stay in town and College Park is a shithole.
2) Turgeon should be on the hot seat. And he would be, except their AD gave him an 8 year contract. It's really looking like he could end up being their Herb, except I'm not even sure Herb was this bad. 1/21/2014 2:06:09 PM |
