Windows 7?! People still use that? Yes get Windows 10. You also only have a little over a month left to get the upgrade for free. 6/1/2016 12:35:53 PM |

I'd still go with 7. The fact that I can't block specific driver updates or disable cortana while still maintaining system search are major strikes. I also don't like the shitty ads in my start menu. 6/1/2016 1:13:22 PM |

why don't you just turn off ads and updates?
for cortona just click "not interested"

Windows 10 is leaps better than 7 and 8. I also haven't found an annoying feature I haven't been able to turn off. Also if you prefer the old school control panel, etc menus then you have the option to open those over the new UI versions too.
Virtual desktops is cool too. They work very much like OSX.
Also again can't wait on bash support. 6/1/2016 4:12:28 PM |

I still have one computer with XP (internal file server), was up for about 200 days without a restart until I needed to change something minor. Only reason it's not on 7 (right now) is one piece of software, and I'm going to try to find a workaround to get to 7, then to 10, before the cutoff in a few weeks. If it weren't for the need of a new paper/ink profiles for a printer it wouldn't even need to see out of our network.6/1/2016 5:56:50 PM |

I was very impressed by the complete lack of driver exposure to the user in Windows 10. Everything was incredibly fluid and automatic. Two old printers worked flawlessly as well as every one of my peripherals. The forced updates are a little frustrating but you can still turn them off and schedule the updates manually. 6/1/2016 6:31:24 PM |

I want to give it a try but Microsoft really doesn't seem to want to let me.
The "upgrade now" thing that launches whenever I startup (Win7) crashes upon clicking Upgrade Now.
I would like to try the standalone ISO via here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 ...but the page doesn't load...just stays white.
None of the many google-able solutions work.
Anyone else? 7/18/2016 7:50:33 PM |

Windows Update starts, and searches for updates forever. Overnight.
I ended up trying Internet Explorer, and the page did load. I downloaded the ISO, burned to DVD, and began a fresh install with it from cold boot.
During the install, after unpacking the files and beginning to actual install, it crashes throwing 0x8007025D (missing files).

I gave it one more shot. Used a different computer (12 year old laptop) to make a USB installer.
Also, during the clean install, I deleted the partition altogether instead of just formatting it. (and then re-allocated it of course).
One of those things solved it.
Also my Win 7 product key worked correctly to activate Windows 10.
Install was the hardest part. All my aged software that I was so worried about seems to work great so far (photoshop CS2, 3ds max 2008, flash 8, etc.) 7/19/2016 7:53:45 PM |

Pro does get Bitlocker which is worthwhile for portable devices imo. I don't know about $100 for only encryption, but if you have other features you're interested in it could sway your decision. 7/21/2016 3:38:27 PM |

Upgraded from 7 to 10 a few days ago. Not a good start. -Locked up once already. -Disc IO was constantly at 100% until I adjusted a billion things. Hopefully that is now fixed. -Sleep mode is broken. The desktop only appears to sleep for about 24 hours at a time before it decides to turn itself back on with no user assistance. -Boots slower than 7. Takes longer to recover from a sleep cycle than 7. Maybe this is a symptom of an upgrade as opposed to clean install.
Not impressed. 7/28/2016 3:18:07 PM |

After reading this (https://tech.slashdot.org/story/16/07/28/1759229/microsoft-to-disable-policies-in-windows-10-pro-with-anniversary-update), I'm not feeling real motivated to move to an OS where the feature set is going to degrade over time. 7/29/2016 3:28:32 PM |

^^Many of those issues are because it's indexing for the first time. If you have a slow HDD it's going to take longer. Same on Windows 7 and 8.
Mine boots just as fast or faster than 8 and certainly 7.
I did an upgrade from 8.1 as well. It also sleeps fine. Could be a driver to blame.
Overall it's far better than 7 and 8.1. Huge improvement across the board. 7/29/2016 5:15:02 PM |

Apparently Windows 10 (and maybe 8) has a setting to allow it to turn itself back on (during 'sleep') for certain updates. Even if you turn the feature off at the OS level, there are certain processes which have an extra super override which you can turn off, but it gets reset periodically.
"Hello, its me, Windows 10! Its 4AM; is this a good time to turn myself on and update? No? Well fuck you, I am going to do it anyways!"

Found it. Windows Media Center defaults to allowing itself to turn on the computer to update itself. While the high value of WMC is tempting, I think I'm going to decline...

I was. Windows 8 (especially with 8.1) had a bunch of cool new stuff. I had no problems upgrading. Maybe it's because I don't really use the start menu and that's what most people complained about but I did have a convertible and 8.1 was worlds better than 7 for touch. 8/21/2016 3:06:12 PM |

Yeah, I made that post while angry as hell (see the post time ). This is the fourth area I have had to disable to stop the sleep wake-up. The sites I was on also mentioned that certain Windows updates will re-enable these areas, so my jimmies were thoroughly rustled at the time. I am going to look to see what other utilities are out there to strip Windows 10 further. I have already run a few. 8/24/2016 11:21:14 AM |
