Good thing he's just finishing up a 100 million dollar deal then huh?

UNRELATED TO ABOVE: I've got a ton of good games from the early 2000's on VHS including that Clemson beatdown on Thursday night, the UNC game that had the Phil statue of liberty play, the Minnesota bowl game, at Texas Tech Phil vs Kingsbury, triple overtime at the horseshoe etc. I'd love to get them to somebody with the equipment to make a digital copy and then we can distribute torrents if folks are interested in getting a copy.

So Samuels, Dayes, and Gallaspy looked really great. McClendon has a heck of an arm and generally made good decisions. Most importantly, it didn't seem like anyone got hurt.

Attendance was par for the course. All those pics from previous spring games where the crowd looked big were from when we only allowed seating in the home side grandstand.

Saw one highlight on the news that was encouraging, Brissett hit Samuels for a deep pass. If Jacoby can start hitting the long ball we will really be in business.

^^^if the QB is good enough, that's the attitude you want them to have. Brady, manning, Rodgers, etc are able to rip it into tight spots and make plays other QBs can't because they're that good. Beck just threw it anywhere because he sucked

You can't get a lot of info from Spring Games.

A. The QB is limited. With our QBs being mobile, the "rules" of the spring game limited them getting outside the pocket and making things happens.

B. The defense plays against our offense every single day. They know which plays we are going to run before they even happen.

C. The playbook really isn't opened up that much.

D. It is April. Some guys haven't even enrolled and started practicing yet.

He played more than 16 games at qb. He may have started 16. Also, I don't see why all you people defend him as a qb. He was terrible. Just terrible.

I wouldn't shit on him if he had played as a tight end. But no, dude still thinks he's a qb.

Unless it's just missing games, he only played in 16 as a qb, probably only actually started like 12 of those. And I'm pretty sure I'm one of the only people who remotely defend him, not because he wasn't bad, but because everybody thinks he lost us a ton of games and we actually won a fair amount (in spite of him, probably)

I only on shit on Stone because people shit on Jay Davis a lot more during that time because they thought Stone was better. Both were sub-par, but Davis was much better than Stone. Always thought he got a raw deal. With that being said, we wasted a phenomenal defense with both of those guys at QB. Sad...

Marcus Stone got a bad deal and catches a ton of flak because of the situation. He was coming in behind P-Riv and was a 4* high school recruit that was suppose to be our "next great QB". He turned out to be extremely overrated and never seemed to really get it going at QB. Fan base was clearly disappointed based on who he was replacing and the amount of hype the kid had.

That being said, he seemed like a good team-first guy. I actually thought he showed a lot of promise at TE, just wish we had made the move earlier.

Yeah Stone wasn't good. And 16 games sounds about right.

^^I may be misremembering things, but I kinda agree. Davis was bad, don't get me wrong. But at least he could throw the ball. With Stone, our offense was so dumbed down he had hardly no responsibility as QB other short passes and hand offs. Look at that sports-reference link. In his 16 games he threw more than 20 times in only 4 games in his career. And we were 1-3 in those games. Us winning when he started had much more to do with the RBs carrying almost the entire offensive load. Not that Davis was any good, but he was asked to do much more at QB too. After Rivers graduated, Davis played 17 games and threw more than 20 passes 14 times in those games. Us going 10-6 with Stone at QB had much more to do with the play calling and game plan than Stone being any good. http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/jay-davis-1/gamelog/

Ahhh the offseason - when you can rehash a QB controversy from a decade ago.

Davis was Rivers' first replacement. And Stone may have been more highly recruited than Davis, but Davis was a pretty solid recruit in his own right, IIRC. THey were both bad QBs. Davis was maybe slightly better as a QB, but the team was worse with Davis because he was being asked to throw 30+ times per game.

Legit lol at these two quotes from this post.

Quote :
"The Wolfpack deserve the “darkhorse” label this season for a host of reasons."

I thought that label was reserved for UNC

Quote :
"Then again, Tom O'Brien got fired after a 7-5 regular season in 2012 -- one that came with a win over league champion FSU -- so it's not like Doeren walked into a complete mess."

Actually Doeren did walk into a complete mess.

i respect marcus stone a hell of a lot for how he dealt with the situation, kept his head up, and ended making a contribution at TE in the late part of his career here. he could have been a bitch like harrison beck but he did not

This is accurate. Davis was a decent 3* recruit. Believe he was a coaches son from Florida who threw for a ton of yards in high school. Stone was a more heralded 4* recruit out of PA that we got over some big boys. Had a great high school career, but Davis was a much better pocket passer. Stone couldn't throw and he couldn't go through reads. He was a fucking horrible QB.

But he seemed like a good dude, so I don't hate on him. I just remember being in the stands when we were playing Miami and Davis threw four TDs...but he also threw a bad pick and had a ton of incompletions (against a stacked Miami team)...and people were chanting Stone's name and were also shitting on Davis...out loud with sidelines and players not too far form us. It was ridiculous. We have some dumb fucking fans.

https://packathletics.exposure.co/8-things-we-learned-from-stateofgrind
nothing really THAT new in here, but one thing i hadn't really thought about:
Quote :
"THE DEFENSIVE LINE IS REALLY YOUNG

Like REALLY young. Like INCREDIBLY young. As in, out of 17 players, 15 are freshmen and sophomores. The good news is that six of those sophomores saw significant action last season. The even better news is that each of the four spots boasts great depth.

The depth chart after spring looks like this:

Seniors (1): Mike Rose

Juniors (1): Monty Nelson

Sophomores (9): Davion Allred, Bradley Chubb, Clark Eyers, Kenton Gibbs, B.J. Hill, Justin Jones, Ty Linton, Pharoah McKever, Kentavius Street

Freshmen (6): Hampton Billups, Garrett Bradbury, Coult Culler, Deonte Holden, Deshawyn Middleton, Darian Roseboro"

This is a little misleading since Allred, Eyers, Linton, and Billups are walk-ons, but we do have four more freshmen coming in to play DL in the fall (Bryant, Johnson, Olenga, Riley), so the 15 out of our 17 DL on scholarship this fall will be freshmen or sophomores. Usually that'd be a huge red flag, but I'm actually excited about it since so many of these young guys have already been impressive. After this season, we could have a really strong, experience unit the next few years.

yep...and the two that aren't sophomores or freshmen (nelson and rose) have proven themselves. and a few of the sophomores got plenty of snaps last season as well. definitely young, but not completely inexperienced on the DL

Jay Davis threw 2, count em, 2 Touchdowns that were called back because Jon fucking Holt could not line up on the line of scrimmage. Davis gets a bad rap, but he was easily better than Evans, Stone, Beck, Thomas, and Mitchell.

Davis was the epitome of a game manager. He did nothing great, but nothing terribly.

At least Evans could throw a sweet fade.

Our backfield will be very strong but I'm curious to see how our receivers will be. I think we can compete for the ACC this year if our receivers crew is strong but sadly I have no indications to believe that this will be the case. Hope I'm wrong though. I can't remember one long touch down pass last year all season, they were all short to mid-range passes.

^ Yep. No real deep ball threat last year. The longest completion of the season was a 65 yd pass to Underwood against Presbyterian. Most of that was YAC.

It seemed like at least once a game underwood was open for a deep ball that jacoby would miss badly. That is why I said a few weeks back if he can improve the long ball we will really be in business.

speaking of receivers, DD gettin' real:
Quote :
"Obviously losing Bo Hines hurts, but the other guy dropped a lot of balls. It wasn’t like Valdes was a super player. "

Quote :
"I’ll be honest -- I’ll be mad if we’re not better at that position than we were a year ago. I thought we underachieved. There’s players in that room I know are better than they played, and there were games where guys had tremendous games and the next week they weren’t. And that’s the worst thing you can do for a quarterback is be inconsistent. ... We feel like we have enough talent once everybody’s healthy to be one of the strong groups on the team. That’s why we made the change we did at receiver coach and recruited the way we did to bring three new guys in."
