I know we're State fans, but LOL at saying a future HOFer is basically the same as Cotchery
Tell me who would be the #1 if we brought Wayne in? Bersin? Ginn? Brown? Funchess?
come on man

Yeah, and now Wayne is 37 and coming off two injury plagued years. He adds nothing to basically any NFL wr corps in terms of production. There's a reason he's not on a team.
[Edited on August 21, 2015 at 3:03 PM. Reason : Reggie Wayne = old and busted. Brenton Bersin = new hotness]

We just need to scrap the idea of being a passing offense, lean on our talented guards and Stewart to carry the offense. Shula's an idiot though so we'll probably continue trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. 8/21/2015 3:10:13 PM |

Wayne is pretty washed. The hamstring injury destroyed whatever he had left
WR doesnt matter that much. The Panthers will sucks this year, but that's not related to losing one WR that drops every other pass he's thrown 8/21/2015 3:47:50 PM |

not saying the Panthers should necessarily sign Wayne, but I think you're forgetting how solid Rice was for the Raiders just because he wasn't as good as he was in his prime. his last three full seasons with them (before his final season that he split with Oakland and Seattle), he totaled 3219 yards and 12 TDs on 238 receptions. Even Torry's year with Jacksonville, he had 722 yards on 51 receptions. If Wayne had that kind of production with a Kelvin-less Panthers, he'd be the top WR on the team.8/21/2015 6:55:38 PM |

You can either be a 50 year old who actually watched dozens of late 70s Steelers games, which I know neither you or I did, or you can look at the numbers. And if you look at the numbers (granted, the game has evolved into more of a passing game), Smitty blows away Swan. Maybe your girlfriends Steelers homer dad put a bug in your ear, but it's not really close. And it's in my favor. Smitty has MUCH better numbers across the board, as well as more Pro Bowls and more All Pros. But muh Steelers were good back when David Thompson was in college

Wayne isn't very smart, so it would be imperative that he potentially gets injured in some preseason games to prove he knows how to run routes. There is absolutely no possibility that he is signed by a team over the next few weeks before the start of the regular season. /justin] 8/22/2015 11:09:50 AM |

I feel bad for Funchess because he's going to be measured against what KB did last year and be expected to jump into that #1 WR role from the start. That's unfair for any receiver picked outside of the top 5, let alone a second round pick. Besides that, looks like another solid group of rookies. Shaq looked really good vs Miami, Darryl Williams could be our long term answer at LT or RT, and Artis-Payne may be the biggest steal of the entire draft. Mayo is the only one that doesn't have an obvious role right now, other than injury insurance. 8/25/2015 4:47:22 PM |

he'll be measured like that by people who want to bench Cam in favor of Anderson or Webb

i expect him to be the panthers best receiver, because no one else is tall enough to catch cams passes.

while that is a broad generalization, he did lead the league in overthrows last season. 17% of his passes!

it's a legitimate issue.

yeah, it's a legit criticism. seems like he throws off his back foot at times, even when he's not under pressure. i don't pretend to know a ton about QB mechanics...but i think he can be inconsistent with his mechanics at times. leading to overthrows. 8/25/2015 7:05:44 PM |

lol Randy Moss had over 1,000 yards every full season he was a Patriot. is that more hyperbole?
he was the #1 receiving threat on the most explosive offense in NFL history. but keep at it, you're bringing the lols
ok i forgot he played for them a few games in 2010. guess Moss sucked as a WR when he was in Oakland in his prime too, because he didn't have great numbers! even though he later he then had back to back to back pro bowl seasons
also Moss had 3 TDs on 9 targets in 4 games in New England in 2010. What a failure.

Well first off, Greg Olsen is going be our leading receiver, just like he was last year, and the year before that, etc... As for players with the actual WR label, I'll say Funchess will lead us in receptions but Teddy Ginn will have the most TDs. He really seems to have great chemistry with Cam, and hasn't lost a bit of his speed.

^yeah Olsen is definitely gonna be the go to guy. I think Funchess will have a nice year...not necessarily because he's gonna be great (maybe he will, who knows) but because he's gonna have to fill in that #1 WR role whether or not he is capable at this point in his career. Ginn had a good season 2 years ago with Cam, so hopefully they can find that rhythm again. Philly Brown (is he going by Corey Brown, now?) finished last year strong so maybe he can emerge. But I don't see either of them getting the majority of the targets...they're more speedsters than possession WRs. And Cotchery is just too old. Boykin has apparently been kinda underwhelming in training camp. So we'll see. 8/25/2015 7:39:15 PM |

Boykin looked great Saturday -- almost #1 WR good. He's not the fastest guy, but he's got great body control and hand-eye coordination. He was making the contested catches look easy. He's also 6'2 with long arms, so he can snare in Cam's inevitable overthrows.
Philly Brown -- on the other hand -- looked awful. I know he tries hard, but he's just not a natural WR. Bad hands, bad body control, and doesn't ever seem to attack the ball when it's in the air. Speed and quickness only matter if you can catch the ball. If he's our #1 guy this year, Lord help us. 8/26/2015 2:30:49 AM |

im still surprised that we have been seemingly inactive in trying to backfill KB with a shorterm WR FA or trade acquisition. What if Funchess or Ginn tears an ACL?

I think if another WR were to get hurt, then we'd go after a short-term plug-in FA. But we had 6 WRs on roster and one was likely to get cut, so now they'll just keep all 5 with KB on IR. Staff seems to be pretty comfortable with what we have left and I guess they expect Funchess will just be forced into the deep-end a little earlier than anticipated. 8/26/2015 10:07:19 AM |

I'm not sure the staff is so comfortable as much as they are cheap. We have a tough schedule this season and the Bucs will be much better than last year. Even in a weak division, it's going to be a rough year. 8/26/2015 10:19:18 AM |

I'd guess they're waiting on cuts from other teams before they make a move too so they can assess the entire marketplace instead of signing someone that doesn't fit as well in a knee-jerk move (reggie wayne, randy moss). 8/26/2015 11:26:00 AM |

We're a defensive, run first team y'all, we're not going to start panic signing a bunch of receivers because one guy got hurt. Remember, we still need to sign Kuechly to a contract extension, Norman is gonna need a competitive offer if we want to keep the only shutdown corner on the roster, and then Star/KK are coming up next. Be thankful Cam's at least got a competent line in front of him for once. 8/26/2015 11:53:50 AM |
