I've got a feeling Young blew his wad in extras the other day. Advantage Mets in game 4?

How short a leash will Mets have on Synndergaard?"

"Why use Familia at all in this game? Kind of odd to bring him in to start the 9th."

You've been making comments and predictions about the Mets since the NLDS without any clue about this team's identity or strategy. Collins let deGrom finish the 5th inning in Game 2 even after giving up 5 runs, and you thought Thor would be on a leash? Your guy was taken out of the 4th, when this is supposed to be your most reliable pitcher.

Mets starters in the NLCS averaged 6.25 innings per start while the Royals only averaged 4.72...so why would you assume it's the Mets pitcher on the short leash?

A Familia non-save appearance isn't out of the ordinary and should have been expected for 3 reasons:
1) Despite the score, don't risk it. After Reed and Clippard there is no one reliable in that bullpen, and they need to save Niese and Colon in case Matz needs long relief.
2) Keep him fresh. If he didn't pitch, he'd be going into the next game with 3 full days off.
3) Get the confidence back. He blew his first save since July, he's not used to losing like that and you don't wait until crunch time to hope he's got it under control.

Some other gems from Kurtis636 in this thread:

Quote :
"I think the Dodgers also have the better position players overall. I think there's a pretty decent chance the Dodgers sweep."

Quote :
"Clearly. It would be impossible to argue, for example that the Dodgers are better in the infield and that while Yoenis is better than anybody in the Dodgers are better than the platoon situation the Mets are probably going to run out there. Also, clearly the mets largely left lineup couldn't be an issue given the Dodgers rotation consisting of 3 lefties. "

Then there was this kind-of apology, which is really just a salute to one player and not the entire team effort or the lights-out pitching:
Quote :
"I admit, I have been dead wrong about the mets. Murphy is probably the best player in either league so far this postseason."

But then we get to the World Series and we're back to the same ol' ignorant disrespect:
Quote :
"Can't believe the Mets are starting Harvey in game 1. I almost guarantee that the Royals will get to him in the first 3 innings and crack him which hopefully sets us up to force early bullpen work."

Good thing it wasn't a complete guarantee. Royals won that game because Cespedes kicked a ball in the first inning. Harvey went 6 innings and put the team in a position to win. Just unfortunate that Familia threw his only bad pitch of the entire postseason.

Quote :
"I really feel like of all the NYM pitchers Harvey is the most fastball reliant and the Royals absolutely feast on fastballs."

Harvey threw fastballs for only 37.5% of his pitches in Game 1. He adapted.

Quote :
"Really, you think down 0-3 they would still run out Matz?"

Really. Even if the Mets had lost Game 3, he'd be on the mound Game 4.

Quote :
"Cracked Familia in game 1, made them use their whole bullpen."

Mets used 5 relievers, Royals used 6 (one of which is a postseason starter). You'd think it was a bigger problem for the Royals moving forward. Also, if the Mets had been up 3 runs going into the 9th and Familia's results were exactly the same, you would not be saying that the Royals "cracked" him.

Quote :
"I never did like the idea of taking pitches just to take pitches "

Granderson almost always takes the first pitch. It's working pretty well for him so far.

They had to know it was coming. With all of their hard throwers, the Royals were way too comfortable in the box. Somebody had to get inside more to make them move. I guess syndergaard figured it was best to do it first pitch.

He didn't need to go 98 and close to the head. Could have gone inside body or near the legs and made a similar statement. Either way I'm glad the Mets came back to life. I really want to see a 7 game WS again.

Murphy got one six inches from his chin in game 1. Would rather have seen it lower but he didn't want to hit him, just send a message and was too amped.

Did love his response post game. If you don't like it, you know where I am...

Regarding Jeurys... Non issue. His sinker and splitter are both better with more work. He's pitched once in nine days. He can go six outs tonight and four tomorrow no problem if it comes to that. Silly it was even a thing...

Never seen matz pitch. I know he's a lefty, and had a good (half) year, but wasn't he DFAd by somebody or straight up released last year or this year or something?

Well I don't know what I thought I heard. Must have just been injuries

yeah he didn't need to throw near the head, but he also was still like a foot from hitting escobar...so i don't think it's too big of a deal really.

It's almost like defense matters.

By the way, my comment about Synndergaard possibly being on a short leash was made after he gave up his 6th hit in the 2nd inning. Sorry I haven't been sufficiently worshipful of your favorite team.

^^^No one is asking you to worship anything. You'v just been spewing out ignorant comments about a team you don't know anything about. I have not claimed any knowledge or predictions about the Royals other than saying they don't strike out much and I had hoped the Mets could win in 5. Now all I can do is hope the Mets win in 7 but if they don't I still see this as an incredibly successful season for a team that matured much earlier than anyone expected. This series could have easily been 3-1 in the Mets favor right now, but that's the way a game of inches goes.

Cespedes, who was significant in getting the Mets into first place, and Murphy, who was significant in getting the Mets to the World Series, were collectively responsible for today's loss, and that is the most frustrating part about it. Wright was AMAZING defensively all game after playing shaky a few nights ago...he wants this so bad and the rest of the team needs to step it up around him.

It's sad to say but if Lagares and Conforto were both in the game with Cespedes sitting, this game goes the other way. Of course no one in a million years would sit Cespedes in favor of anybody.

I wasn't spewing, I've seen the Mets play quite a few times this year, them and how good the NL Central race was all anybody talked about in September. I still don't think the Mets postition player are better than the Dodgers from top to bottom. Pitching matchup looked pretty even on paper. They did however play better than the Dodgers. I did think they'd beat the Cubs because they're so one dimensional and only have one really good pitcher.

I also wasn't wrong about Harvey. He does throw more fastballs than the other Mets pitchers. He threw a lot fewer than he normally does, but I wasn't wrong about how much he relies on his fastball. I also wasn't wrong about them getting to him early, he didn't get swings and misses. Bitching about how bad the defense behind him was shouldn't be an excuse. The Mets are not a good fielding team, especially without Tejada. Murphy is one of the worst fielding second basemen in the league, your shortstop is a backup, and your outfield is average at best. Not being able to get swings and misses is going to result in problems.

Umm, the Royals have an incredibly deep bullpen beyond just how good Wade Davis is. It's much less damaging for them to have to use a bunch of guys than it is for the Mets who just don't have the quality depth in the pen that the Royals do. If you can get the starters out early it's much worse for the Mets than for the Royals. And yes, if Familia had not blown the save I probably wouldn't have said anything about them getting to him, but they weren't, and he's been far from a shutdown closer this series. They've made good contact against him plenty of times and this is his second blown save now.

Good luck next game.

I liked Collins decision making with the bullpen until last night. He let Matz bat in the bottom of the 5th just to take him out at the first sign of danger. I don't think he even completed a single out.

Then you have Niese and Colon, who are specifically on this roster to be used in long relief when the starters can't go the distance. So why were they only used for 1 combined inning last night? Neither gave up any baserunners, so why not let them continue?

Then for the 7th inning, in comes Addison Reed whose ERA, BAA, and WHIP this postseason are 1.59/.150/0.58. Why not leave him in for a 2nd inning? Why bring in Clippard who has been shaky since early September when you could leave Reed on the mound to close the gap to Familia?

I think it was the right call to send Harvey back out there, he had been untouchable. Probably would have yanked him after the walk though.

Haha, must be a Cardinals or White Sox fan.

I hope we can keep this team together for a little while. There's a decent chance this team can win 90+ games again next season. Probably have to let Cueto go, maybe we can find the cash to sign another decent starter. Don't think we have anybody coming up from the minors.

great postseason across the board. Thrilling World Series. KC is one of the best top to bottom teams to win in quite awhile. every person on that roster contributed in some way. congrats to them and i hope they can make a run again next year.

? The Royals were definitely the better team and deserved to win. I'm sure them making the WS last season and having that experience helped them out a lot. But the Mets did hold a 9th inning lead in 4 games...lost 3 of those, obviously, but "didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell" is a bit of an overstatement.

Congrats to the Royals. Like I said, they definitely were the better team and deserved to win. I'm excited about the Mets future.

i'm not sure if this goes back to some of the on-field bench clearing moments they had early in the season or what, but i don't really see that. The only one that you could really single out would be Yordano Ventura. and I won't argue against that at all. but looking up and down that world series lineup i don't see it. When i think of punk mentality i think of players and teams that have a deserving mentality. Much like the top half of the Blue Jays lineup, always questioning calls, arguing balls and strikes. I feel like the Royals (at least in the post season) let their play on the field speak for them.
