I think Hillary did a slightly better job overall. The first part was brutal and Trump got in some sick burns that definitely didn't help. Once the debate shifted to actual policy, Hillary did a much better job, although she could have definitely done better. 10/9/2016 10:43:45 PM |

Anyone who thinks Trump "won" because he wasn't as horrible as his last debate needs to remember that being president isn't like a game of golf with your buddies. You don't get a 40 stroke handicap with other world leaders and politicians. 10/9/2016 10:52:30 PM |

It's also important to remember that these debates aren't for smart people who have been paying attention. Undecided voters aren't deep thinkers, they're mostly low information and largely don't car about depth of policy. They want things that sound smart or strong, doesn't matter if it makes sense as long as it sound good. 10/9/2016 11:00:51 PM |

I thought the moderators actually did a pretty decent job. They asked hard questions of both and pushed back on both. Not perfect but a solid job. As far as who won I would give a slight win to Trump. Sure he spewed plenty of bullshit but I thought he seemed to control the debate better. And let's be honest, if anyone lets a debate skew their opinion then they aren't in it for the minute policy details. 10/9/2016 11:08:26 PM |

Trump didn't really answer a single question directly aside from the one about emails, but he has a knack for distraction. Hillary can't hang with him in an exchange of barbs, and she should have just began the debate by emphasizing her policies and not really addressing his scandals. I think she did a good job of describing an inclusive America, but she wasted a lot of time rebutting his claims that weren't even on topic.

Ugh. If this were one of the high school debate competitions I used to judge, I think I would declare that nobody won. Neither of them has great delivery, and only Hillary even pretended to treat the questions as prompts.
Trump did better than last time. He stayed closer to message and had more well-developed lines of attack. They were still bad, and he still can't stick through a sentence from one end to another, but better. I think he seemed even more petulant and sore loser-y than before, which I guess might sway the odd undecided who views it as weakness.
Hillary had chances to land a coup de grace and she didn't, or couldn't, do it. Which may be strategic. I can envision a school of thought which says, "If Hillary lays it on too thick, she'll come off as a hectoring nag. Better to wait until after the debate and have other organs do it." Or she may be waiting until the last debate, when it might have the most lasting impact. But it still would have been satisfying to hear her respond to "She said it, so she meant it" with a crushing remark about his comments on the tape.
If hay is not made with "I know nothing about Russia," then the Democrats are dumber than I thought. 10/9/2016 11:24:12 PM |

She's really, really bad at this stuff. She's good when she does town hall events solo or in an interview, but she's awful when pressed.
Again, I'm just amazed that she allowed herself to be on the defensive for at least half this debate. She even managed to seem unprepared for the wiki leaks Wallstreet speeches question. It actually helped with Trumps best moment (talking about how Hillary has helped rich donors who are people like him). 10/9/2016 11:42:33 PM |

Trump's question of "Why haven't you donated any of your money to your own campaign" should have been delivered harder. Not sure why his camp isn't telling him to play that up more, that she is bought and paid for by the same "evil tax-evading Wallstreet" she claims to be against. He said "Follow the money" last debate but he should really cut her off and cite how much money big banks pay her when she starts to critique the 1%. 10/10/2016 12:29:51 AM |

^ same for safe zones, which they both called for (although Trump likely has no idea what this entails, or what a no fly zone is).
Neither candidate has a great plan for syria, but there's not many great options. It is a new cold war-- the main factor is Russia. If it wasn't for Russia's backing of assad, the options are much simpler. 10/10/2016 1:35:04 AM |

Interesting that the scientific polls (SAD! that I have to distinguish by saying scientific) are showing Clinton winning the debate but Trump exceeding expectations by more. I saw it more 50/50 from a handled it well perspective.
Of course it's absolutely impossible to judge Trump considering all he did was lie and parrot far right wing media talking points. But he didn't lose his cool or berate anyone so that is good.
(And I'll walk back my Clinton/Lincoln thing. Astonishingly she told the truth and what she said was the context of her quote. Who is paying $250k for that shit speech though? Yuck.)
**** interesting talking point going around media. What incentive does Trump have to actually do third debate? He certainly did more than imply that they were unfair to him and he didn't come off as a total and complete nutcase. Why risk doing a third?

It's hilarious that trump can't even keep his criticisms from contradicting each other. Like on one hand he claims that the power vacuum from the Iraq war led to the rise of ISIS (which is mostly true, even though the republicans have most of the blame there), then a few minutes later he complains about the Iran deal and says Iran was about to collapse, like that would have been fantastic and had no negative consequences at all. 10/10/2016 3:04:07 PM |

If the GOP could find any possible way to get Trump to drop and replace him with nearly anyone even this late in the game they would still have a pretty good chance at winning. Remember they do these polls by grabbing phone numbers from registered voter rolls, and then try to call an even number of Democrats and Republicans. The fact that more of the actual respondents who watched the debate identify themselves as Democrats is a bad sign for Republicans in and of itself.
..
This link explains it pretty well. Basically party ID isn't something they know before hand in most cases, it's based on what the respondent tells the person doing the survey.

its well-known that democrats are more likely to watch the debates. obviously in a polarised environment, if you ask 37% democrats, and 26% republicans, the democrat is going to win. Especially when most independents are to the left of the democratic party.
I understand sampling and how polls work. i've published quantitative research. i just don't trust the sources or the system at all. the debates are not even real debates anyway so the concept of winning is "moot". the people running them have clear conflict of interest. Then we could get to the polls which claim to be scientific but are scams and have intentionally flawed methods. They should be illegal because they are an anti-democratic tool at this point. 10/10/2016 7:23:51 PM |

yes, asking people who they are going to vote for and them sharing those results is very anti-democratic. We should just not ask anyone anything ever and then when election day comes around, everyone will enjoy the surprise of who won and agree with the decision without questioning it. FOH dude. well we know the polls are being used to keep 3rd parties out of the debates because if they get in then they will likely win like ventura did.
we also know that seeing the polls influences the way people vote.

exit polls can address this concern (which was not actually stated but implied)
