https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39041535/college-football-playoff-committee-selection-process-florida-state-alabama-texas

Quote :
""All of us had the emotional tie, like, 'Holy s---, this is really going to suck to do this,'" one committee member told ESPN. "We talked about that over and over, and we just kept coming back [to] are they good enough with what they have to win a national championship, and it just kept coming back [to] we didn't think they could.""

lol. If you only put teams in it that are capable of winning the whole thing then 1) most years you can’t even put 4 teams in that have a shot to win it and 2) why didn’t UGa make it this year? They could win it all! Why did TCU make it last year? Or Cincy the year before? Or Michigan State? We all knew those teams were not gonna win it all. But it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a bid.

Quote :
"There wasn't any discussion about the SEC being left out because the committee maintains that it talks about teams, not conferences."

Sure but if you spend all year being told that one or two conferences are the best and these other conferences suck ass then the perception and bias is already built in. You don’t have to explicitly collude to keep the SEC in…it just becomes a toxic bias.

Quote :
"It wasn't until the ACC championship game began to unfold, though, that the members' opinions began to truly take shape. The group grew concerned as it watched the Noles struggle to get a first down in the first half. "

Did they watch Michigan’s offense? And Michigan had their starters!

Quote :
"In the end, though, the difference between Alabama and Florida State boiled down to the committee's written protocol, particularly the emphasis on strength of schedule -- which gave Alabama the edge -- and the section that allowed committee members to project what Florida State might look like in a semifinal without their star quarterback.
"

Strength of schedule should only be a determining factor when comparing otherwise equal resumes. And undefeated vs a 1 loss team is not equal resumes. No mention of the common opponent and how those results definitely gave an edge to FSU.

Quote :
"Not having Heisman hopeful starter Travis "changes their offense in its entirety," Corrigan said, "and that was really a big factor with the committee as we went through everything."

So was the Longhorns' double-digit win at Alabama in Week 2. The committee had been consistent in honoring the head-to-head result all season and felt it was important to be consistent with that on Selection Day -- even though they believed Alabama had improved since that September loss."

So Bama can improve over the course of a season but FSU can’t be given the opportunity to improve and gel and game plan with a new QB over the next 3-4 weeks?

Texas should have been left out instead of Alabama, there is precedent for head to head not mattering as much as body of work.

But hey it's gonna be hilarious when they are multiple blowout games in the CFP. again.

Yeah, weird how having an 18-year-old freshman making his first start at QB makes the offense a lot worse. By the time the playoffs roll around, Tate would be back.

It's ok for people to be interested and invested in things that don't interest you

Also, have you never seen the discourse on television shows??

Yes it is. All the rankings leading up to the final one, especially. It’s all for entertainment and engagement. I don’t like how 95% of the season revolves around who will make the playoff when 95% of the teams have no real shot ever win a title.

But that doesn’t mean outrage isn’t warranted when they fuck up.

So whats the bet on when FSU leaves the ACC? And which schools follow? I am betting on Clemson and potentially UNC.

They’re definitely leaving. Just a matter of how soon. It’s still really expensive for them to leave. But if private equity gets involved it could happen a lot sooner

I think that’s the exit fee. But then that doesn’t even count the media rights side of things. Which would probably be negotiated by lawyers I guess. But the Grant of Rights runs through, I think 2036, so with each passing year it would get cheaper to buy out your media rights.

But yeah…a couple more years is my guess.

People are shitting on the Manny Diaz hire for Duke based on his time at Miami. And….he pretty much did what Mario Cristobal did at Miami with less support than Mario currently has (NIL, financial support from fans, etc).

Idk. Feels hard to judge Diaz based on a Miami program that (from the outside) looks meddlesome and broken for basically any coach that’s been there recently.

In terms of continuity of system from Elko to Diaz, I think it's a great hire. He's also got private school recruiting experience, albeit at a much flashier private school. I think Duke alum would be ecstatic if he can get them to Miami-level consistency.

I think the counter to that is the floor at Miami is higher than the floor at Duke, mostly due to the level of player you can recruit. It’s easier to go 7-5 at Miami than at Duke.

I think he did a slightly better job at Miami than people give him credit for. He (or his OC) made Tyler Van Dyke look good. Mario has made TVD look awful. I also seem to recall a lot of big financial promises once Mario was hired, which gives me the impression that Manny never really had full support from the boosters at Miami. Felt kinda dirty how they went and openly courted Mario for the job before even firing Manny. It feels like a lot of the problems at Miami might have been institutional. Maybe Manny will never be a good HC, but I also don’t think his time at Miami is a very fair assessment of his HC abilities.

And that is a valid counter. I don't think Miami gave him long enough or invested consistently either. I don't entirely blame them -- they found a new guy who was available. Curious about the cultural change, though.

I'm sure Georgia will be pumped up to try and beat them by 60 in a completely meaningless game

Time to move these bowl games to the spring and have them replace the spring game.

Would be way more interesting to see the teams with all their portal guys in the spring vs another opponent.

Fun fact, the last time FSU played Georgia in a bowl game, they ended up having a non-QB take most of their snaps. Looks like history might be 'bout to repeat

I like the idea of moving the bowl games to the regular season. Like week 1 (or week 0) of the following year. But not the spring game. Tons of people will opt of a spring game too. Lots of players don’t play in them if they’re not 100% as is. It’s hardly a football game.

No. But if the best program in the conference over the last decade had lost their bowl game to a basketball school, I'm sure Paul Finebaum would've had trouble controlling himself

I don't feel sorry for them, but they definitely should have been in the playoffs* even considering this ass beating. They wouldn't be missing like half their entire depth chart in that game.
