A 32gb iPhone would rock my mojo. My 16 gigger is almost full, mostly with music.

For those of you who switched from 1st generation to 2nd generation....do you feel like you got screwed by AT&T, or do you feel like the money shift (getting gouged monthly instead of up-front) is worth it?

see that's the thing. I barely use my minutes either. I think I have upwards of 4000 rollover minutes this cycle. I have at&t also, and have a grandfathered plan (cingular circa 2001) that has unlimited n&w which skews that a little more.

But right now i pay roughly 70 bucks a month. I have a good phone, but its nothing special. SE W580i which is a walkman and i use that quite often aswell as basic apps like email, aim, and basic internet (sports scores, movie times, weather). I don't know anyone that i see on a regular basis with an iPhone to play with it long enough to know if i'd truely use it to it's $100/month price tag.

I usually pay ~$100-~$150 month but thats only because I make a lot of international calls to Germany and Egypt from my cell since I don't have a land line. i also have the 450 min / unlimited text plan and never go over my minutes.

About $85 for the 450 minutes plan with the 200 text messages package.

And it seems totally worth it considering all the use I get out of this phone.

Yeah, that's what I have, its not more than $83 a month. 450 minutes doesn't seem like a lot, but when you're talking to other AT&T users and you have like 5000 weekend and night minutes, I've never come close to the 450 total.

I also don't go over texts because I just send a lot more e-mails now than I used to since I can check my e-mail account whenever I want or get on AIM.

i used 600+ text messages last month hahaha. So i'd have to have the 1500 package

I'm thinking about it. I just upgraded and extended my contract last christmas so i'm not sure if I qualify yet.

^that game is so much fun, but Galcon is the best game hands down. Only game that offers 4-player online play and ranks. It's incredibly addicting.

can someone explain the apps to me?

especially ones you see on the commercials like urban spoon.

do you have to pay to download these and then pay monthly to use them?

what about the music ID app?

that's why i never use my current phone to its ability. i dont want to download an app for 4 bucks then have to pay 4 bucks a month to use it.

^

I have yet to see an app that costs per month.

And I think the way it is setup they may be able to charge you for updates, but I haven't seen apps do that either.

yeah, i also have not heard of an app that charges a subscription fee, although they may be out there (or they may be coming). I'm not sure if that is even a capability built into the iPhone App Store system - i.e. if an application did want to charge a subscription fee, then I think the developer of that app would have to set up his own way of charging and collecting the money, then enabling/disabling your access to the service. Even that, though, might be disallowed by the iPhone application terms of service

So, for now, you can pretty much assume that the only cost for any of the apps is the price you pay to download it from the App Store

yeah i don't think the apps themselves can have anything other than flat free pricing, but access to the services an app developer provides in conjunction with an iphone app is of course not controlled by apple. for instance, the Remember The Milk app i believe is only useful if you have a premium paid account with RTM

I was like that at first, but then I gave in and bought Vay...and after that, yes, it opened the gates. The App Store makes it really easy to drop cash.

I don't regret any of the purchases, though--I read the reviews on the store and places like toucharcade.com before I settle on anything.

Is the minimum plan for AT&T seriously $70 for 450 minutes? That seems kind of ridiculous. What's the voice coverage like for this area? I'm considering an iPhone, but paying more than I already do on Verizon seems kind of retarded.

Are "real" games ever going to come to the iphone/ipod touch? I mean there's quite the variety of games, and even some big name games like Crash Bandicoot and Spore, but they're all short segmented versions of larger games. Are we ever going to see full-length games like on the DS or PSP? There's no space limitation and the hardware is there. Has the SDK just not been out long enough?

call me an iphone n00b...

i'm considering getting one and i need some information- what should i do as soon as i get home from the store, if i get one? should i jail break it? should i leave it alone? is this something most people do? how does it affect updates and such? what's the point to it?

sorry for the "beginner" questions- i'm just not sure where to start.

where is the best place to buy screen protectors and cases? i imagine they're pretty overpriced at the apple or at&t stores.

If I get an email with a word or excel file attachment, how do I save that to someplace on the iphone? I'd like to be able to pull them back up w/o opening the email or attach it to other emails.

i'm unsure if I can even do that..

not natively. You cannot access the iPhone file system directly, and have to go through Applications.
Seems like there are some applications that allow you to view the file system, but that may be only on Jailbroken phones

I can pretty much guarantee you that Apple will eventually open email up to application integration. Once you have that, people can release word processors and spreadsheet editors that are useful

yeah, well i was kind of wondering which will come first - i.e. will there be a Word/Excel application first but no way to open those documents, or will they open up the file system but then you have nothing to do with the files?

to address the gripe overall, Apple has clearly decided that they don't want a Finder/Explorer-like system with the iPhone, in that they feel it should not be necessary for people to go file-hunting through their home directory. Everything on the phone should be accessible through an Application, and where appropriate, the Applications should work together (like how Photos can be shared between Mail and the picture App).
Maybe instead of opening up the file system, they will open up some more hooks into the default applications, so a Word viewer/editor can scan Mail and find and .doc files to open. But then I guess there's the question of where to save the files.... they probably shouldn't rely too much on Mail being used as an organizational tool
