yea, our LB coach wants him bad, but he wants to play safety. either theyre going to compromise and try to use him as a rover type or he has a decision to make

The fact that our coaches are really pushing for him to commit soon leads me to believe they feel they found a "diamond in the rough" type deal here. This could be similar to Good last year where we find a 1-star with little offers and by the time the year is out they're a 4-star with a ton of offers. If TOB and Co. want him this early in the process, then I hope we get him.

aph if you want to update that list a little bit more there are two players who gave verbal commitments earlier:

Louis Nix gave a verbal commitment to Miami on November 28 and Christian Pace gave a verbal commitment to Michigan on June 2.

Also, Lamarcus Joyner narrowed his list down the other day. Unfortunately it does not look like we made the final cut:

ESPNU 150 Watch Lister Lamarcus Joyner told affiliate Web site Bucknuts.com that he has trimmed down his long list of suitors.

"I've started to narrow it down. Basically I've narrowed it down to Ohio State, Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. Basically I've been telling the other schools thanks for recruiting me, but I've got my top schools."

Joyner mentioned that he'll make an official visit to Ohio State for the Buckeyes' contest with USC. The elite corner also said Florida State and USC are "guaranteed" official visit destinations.

Thanks. It's been well over a month since I last updated the list so there were bound to be some errors. I left Nix up there because he's listed as a "soft verbal" to miami. Most of the other guys on there have varied amounts of interest on the program and I don't usually take them off until they commit elsewhere, but since joyner seems definitive about his top schools, i'll go ahead and pull him.

Not sure if I like DJ's tackling style...seems to rely on the clothesline/arm tackle too much.

I'm guessing these recruits are for 2010 season? Don't know much about football recruiting...seems kinda late to be signing guys

^I'm not sure what video you were watching but the kid exhibited some pretty good textbook tackling form. That was the one thing in the whole video that actually stood out about him! He keeps his body low, he brings his head across the body/in front of the runner, and he drives through his tackles. I counted maybe 4 "arm tackles" and 0 "clotheslines". The thing about his arm tackles is that they were necessary. If you are in position to make a perfect form tackle and make an arm tackle, that isn't good. But if you are coming out of position, or the running back makes a good move, etc, then you often times have to reach out and make an arm tackle. That isn't a very easy thing to do, yet he seemed strong enough to do it. He looks pretty solid.

^^ I agree he was making solid tackles

The one thing I did see (and this is getting really picky) is that sometimes he would wait on the ball carrier to get him instead of getting downhill and blowing him up. Seems like he wants to be a rangy, hitting safety in the Sean Taylor mold.

I think this quote shows off the character that our coaching staff has. They aren't here to bullshit any of these kids and truly want what's best for their future, even if that doesn't lie with NC State.

^^^ that's generally proper technique for a high school safety because at that level, if the running back even gets to you, it means you're the last line of defense and it's 6 if he gets by you... unlike in college where the linebackers take a lot better angles and have better lateral speed.

Evan Hailes named his top 5 and we are still in it. It doesn't sound too promising though. He does not plan to visit us. It seems like he is going to decide between Penn State, Va Tech and Tennessee.

Hailes may not officially visit us but maybe that's because:

Quote :
""I was there for a Junior Day... I've been a couple of times to NC State," said Hailes. "The only places I've really been so far is NC State and West Virginia, but I like it a lot at NC State. I feel comfortable there. I like their coaching staff because they are all down-to-earth and they make me feel like they want me to go to school there."

Recruiting: State headed for big year

The weekend oral commitment of Southern Durham High receiver Anthony Creecy was more evidence that N.C. State may be poised for a big year when it comes to landing in-state talent.

Creecy is the second player regarded as the best in the state at his position to make a pledge to the Wolfpack's Class of 2010. The two major recruiting networks, Rivals.com and Scout.com, both have Creecy and Chapel Hill offensive tackle Robert Crisp in their early list of the nation's Top 100 prospects. Crisp committed to N.C. State in April.

The impressive start is a contrast to a year ago when the Wolfpack didn't sign a single player ranked in the state's top 10 and had only three in the top 30 – linebacker Ricky Dowdy, quarterback Everett Proctor and defensive lineman Sylvester Crawford.

This could be shaping up to be a year more like 2008 when N.C. State grabbed the state's No. 1 linebacker (Terrell Manning) and top offensive lineman (R.J. Mattes). The Wolfpack claimed eight of the state's top 30 players that year.

But when it comes to signing the top position players since 2002, the Wolfpack had its best showing in '03 by landing the No. 1 defensive end (Mario Williams), athlete (Chris Hawkins) and linebacker (Ernest Jones).

Creecy wasn't alone

Creecy's commitment wasn't the only one received by the Wolfpack over the weekend.

College Park, Ga., offensive lineman Torian Box also chose N.C. State after visiting the campus for the first time on Saturday. A 6-foot-4, 285-pounder, Box will be starting for a fourth straight season at North Clayton High in 2009.

Box moved to Georgia from Rockford, Ill., at age 8, but didn't start playing organized football until middle school. He was a quick study, however, earning a starting job at tackle on North Clayton's offensive line as a freshman. Box missed all but the final four games of his sophomore season with a sprained MCL before bouncing back with a big junior year.

East Carolina, Mississippi State and UAB had offered Box scholarships, but he knew even before taking the visit to Raleigh last weekend he wanted to join the Wolfpack.

"Me and my (high school) coach talked about it before I came up on my visit,'' Box said Tuesday morning. "He came to my house Friday to talk to my family, and everyone was cool with it. I pretty much had my mind halfway made up about N.C. State at that point. But after seeing the campus and the facilities, that sealed the deal.''

The visit also marked Box's first in-person meeting with Wolfpack head coach Tom O'Brien.

"Everyone told me he was a straight forward guy,'' Box said. "He's not about the hype and all that. I sat there talking with him about 20 minutes. He was pretty cool. Everything I was told about him was right.''

The commitments from Creecy and Box bring N.C. State's total to six.

Names and notions ...

South Carolina has received an oral commitment from Winston-Salem Parkland defensive tackle J.T. Surratt . Surratt, a 6-3, 287-pounder, chose the Gamecocks over offers from East Carolina, Louisville, Marshall and Wake Forest. ... Weddington High's big defensive tackle Darius Kilgo (6-5, 311) currently holds seven scholarship offers, but says East Carolina, North Carolina and South Carolina are his favorites, even though the Tar Heels haven't offered yet. ... South Stanly defensive end Justin Taylor (6-4, 220) has quietly accumulated an impressive list of offers from Arkansas, Auburn, East Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, N.C. State and Virginia Tech.

That's exactly what I was thinking when i was watching. He seemed very in control, which is good, and good tackling, but I just didn't see that "flying to the ball" kind of intensity. Which could be good and bad. I think he would make a pretty solid outside linebacker or nickle back with his size and ability to contain on the outside. But not someone I would expect to make a lot of great plays in the back field or a strong saftey that is flying up into the box.

I think that would be the coach not calling a blitzing defense, which makes sense in the times they're playing against that veer/option/Wakeforest offense.

A lot of high schools still run the option b/c most QBs at the high school level haven't developed enough arm strength and touch on the ball to be trusted to run an offense that passes as often as those in college and the pros. Also it is a great equalizer when it comes to talent.

I'm with ya, but pursuing the ball carrier isn't blitzing. He's very in control of himself and patient, which are good things, but for a saftey that big who only runs a 4.77 40 (he would have to be more of a run support saftey in my opinion, most recievers could run right past him) he would need to play a little more downhill in my opinion

^ He recently ran a 4.6 flat 40 at a combine. D.J., like many kids who don't run track, was doing it with bad technique. While I put some stock in a guy's 40 time (especially if it is sub 4.4), I more want to see how they run in pads. I'd rather have a football player than a track star.

OT Logan Stewart, who was very high on us and probably would have committed if offered, committed to Vanderbilt recently.

Quote :
"Offensive lineman Logan Stewart of Boiling Springs (S.C.) High has committed to Vanderbilt.

The 6-foot-5, 278-pound Stewart, No. 23 on our S.C. Top 25 Prospects List, was also offered by South Carolina, East Carolina, Air Force, Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Liberty.

He said it was tough picking Vanderbilt over the Gamecocks, especially after Boiling Springs quarterback and good friend Dylan Thompson had committed to South Carolina."

I can't overstate how happy I am that this thread has picked back up.

"^ He recently ran a 4.6 flat 40 at a combine. D.J., like many kids who don't run track, was doing it with bad technique. While I put some stock in a guy's 40 time (especially if it is sub 4.4), I more want to see how they run in pads. I'd rather have a football player than a track star.

OT Logan Stewart, who was very high on us and probably would have committed if offered, committed to Vanderbilt recently."

That's good to hear, but regardless 4.77 is pretty slow for a DB...and I'm with ya, he seemed to be able to read plays well and took good angles to the ball. I still think he would make a better college linebacker/nickle back/rover than a true saftey

^Linebacker/rover yes. But nickelbacks typically have to be lightning quick. You're covering the slot WR, which more-often-than-not is fast as shit.

i think some of you guys really overrate the speed of college players. dj green's "4.6" really being like a 4.77 is not out of the ordinary at all. some LBs in the ACC would struggle to crack 5.0. jon abbate ran a 5.04 at the combine for instance. these guys get weeded out fast in the NFL but there's a spot for them at this level

DJ said he was finally taught how to run the 40 right, and he didn't just do the 4.6 one time. He's done it a couple of times since.

That's the thing, after college these kids will work with trainers to get their 40 time ready for combines, and I'm sure many do that out of high school to increase their stock. Game-speed and combine-speed are 2 completely different things, and I'll take game-speed all day.
