people swear by these tires for sport touring. I've heard of guys pushing 15k+ from a set. I don't get 15k out of bike

Really starting to dig the idea of getting a sport touring bike, Currently considering a VFR 800, FJR 1300 and a BMW 1150/1200 RT

Any thoughs.

FWIW, I love my VFR800. There are some documented electrical issues, but nothing I've come across yet. It's pretty easy to do most regular maintenance on, and it's comfortable. That said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of those three. The other two are definitely tilted more towards touring though, especially with shaft drive. If you want a shaft drive vfr, gotta go with Shamu(VFR1200).

The R1150R/RT is a huge downgrade from the R1200R/RT. The R1200R/RT is worth the extra money, IMO. Otherwise, if you are in the R1150R/RT price range, I'd suggest looking at other bikes. There are plenty to choose from.

Ask Duke. He's ridden both. Quinn has also ridden both IIRC. hell, Quinn has ridden quite a few ST bikes...

paging Quinn

I love my R1200R. It does everything I want it to and it does it all very, very, well.

I've ridden the VFR, Futura, R1200R, 1050 sprint st, and some other ~1100 boxer bmw in the sport touring class. If you're riding solo I think the VFR would be a good buy. If you're going two up I think its too small. I didn't feel it was much bigger than an SV650 to be honest. I would ride an SV650 across the country though so maybe my opinion is crap. The only one I regret not buying was the trumpet sprint. I dont think the build quality was the greatest and it is a little odd looking to me but the engine was worth the 5 grand asking price. Best motor I've ever ridden hands down, ehe.

I'm going cross country next summer with my wife and need a larger bike. I'm thinking a sprint would be the smallest I would even consider. I think I'll be in yacht territory..... concours 14 , fjr , st1300. I think classifying those as "sport" is a stretch. Heck, I would consider an RT if I saw a good deal. I'm not real fond of the boxer feel and I dont think they feel any lighter than they are even if the engine is a foot from the ground. I think my choice will be the connie .

Try everything you can get the keys to. One will make sense.

I haven't ridden an 1150R or 1250R, but I've ridden the RT versions of both. There is absolutely no comparison. I found the 1150RT to be a little disappointing, even, and I'm a BMW fan. Not a bad bike by any means--just below my expectations. I think the 1200RT is awesome, though--it's light years ahead of the 1150.

No way, dude. Not unless you plan on routinely riding, like, coast to coast, or maybe if you plan on riding nearly exclusively 2-up for significant distances. It's too much bike for any sort of normal riding. I mean, it's not that it won't do it, and even do it pretty well for what it is--it's that it's a big penalty over something like an R1200RT for 95% of riding, for not much of an advantage in the great majority of that other 5%.

If what you really, really need is a full-dresser, then nothing else will really do...but something like a 1200RT would be money for a coast-to-coast ride. It's only if you want to do shit like that all the time that a 'Wing would be what you want.

Got the plastics on the bike. It's 4 different colors, but I'll get it painted eventually and either way, it's good to have it whole again.

Going to go to Maiden to Mean City Cycles to get my seat redone.

Just hit 40k miles on the bike about a week ago. I've put 16k miles 15 months.

So my friend Mike that quit his job and sold the house to go across the US on a motorcycle for a year (see pages page 50 and page 58 of this thread) just published a book about it the trip. Makes me realize how old this thread is - it took him over a year since he returned to write and rewire the book, in addition to the year of actual travel.

Our very own dustm and myself make an appearance in it! It's pretty hilarious to read, there is a lot of inspirational thoughts in there, and a lot of good info on what to do and what not to do when riding long distances and traveling on a budget. It's 12 bucks well spent! http://www.amazon.com/Indirect-Redirection-Wild-Wonderful-Motorcycling/dp/0615813771/ref=sr_1_wsc1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372128220&sr=8-1-wordsplitter&keywords=indirectredirection

Been seriously considering this lately. Then saw a couple wrecked Ducatis bring huge money (over 10k. Each!) and I realize that nothing cool will be cheap.

Also I worry about gravel driveway, will that be a problem?

^^ start with a dirt bike for a few months where you won't care if you dump it and you'll be fine in your driveway as long as you aren't in a hurry.

^^^^^ at first I thought you were talking about motomike / motomikeh.

He quit his job as an engineer, rode all over America, Mexico, and Central America...a couple of times. Maybe even 3? I can't remember. Sustained himself working odd jobs, and ultimately by playing poker in Biloxi, and then Vegas.

He tried to get me to go on his first trip (planned destination of Costa Rica, I believe) on my GSX-R 750. I was like "Dude, there is no way in hell I'm riding a GSX-R from Raleigh to Costa Rica and back!"

Gravel will be the least of your worries. Maybe its worse on a sport bike. It's no problem on an sv or harley (remember that thing Hiro??)

Haha. I remember....

I remember the looks all those trailer park hill billies gave us as we rode by man... They were shocked. I thought we were going to be shot and buried, or worse, eaten.

My next door neighbor has an Electra Glide and handles it fine. A buddy came over one day on his CBR and to see him coming down the drive you'd have thought he was on a unicycle.

Anyone ever ridden a 1st-gen Ducati 900ss?

http://okaloosa.craigslist.org/mcy/3882689864.html

The seller indicated that he'd sell, grudgingly, for $2500. I think it'd be neat to have one of Ducati's classic models in the stable, at least for a little while.

yeah yeah, i know. i'm definitely not interested if the valves weren't done recently, but at 6k miles, either they should have just been done, or they're due, so that's an easy call.

Looks like this dude is a Ducatiphile, so hopefully it's been immaculately maintained.

So...what does the "motorcycle / abortion bill" (SB 353) mean for us motorcycle riders? It's difficult to find any info that doesn't focus on the abortion side of it.

It was initially to establish a specific fine for people that force motorcyclists out of their lane of travel or causes a crash by doing so.

That does look pretty bad ass. Pedaling a downhill bike is no fun. Although it'll probably be harder to get away with it than with the electric ones when you hit the trail that doesn't allow motorized vehicles

Rode to Myrtle and back this weekend on the gsxr.

Felt good to be back on a bike...but probably should have picked a shorter trip for my first time back in the saddle in awhile.

My body(right hand especially) hates me.

Watch Long Way Round and Long Way Down on Netflix.

Ewan McGregor and his friend drive motorcycles from London, east through Europe and Asia, fly to Alaska, then drive to New York City. In Long Way Down they drive from Scotland to Cape Town South Africa.

If you like motorcycles and adventures, its worth watching.

I would say yes as long as everything works mechanically and it has been maintained. Give it to someone to learn to ride, and then resell it for $500-1000 more than you bought it for if you fix it up a little in 6 months when they get bored.
