^ I keep reading "atomic bomb" and "nuclear" to come out this week. I would expect something like this to fall into that category.

Not clicking that Doyel link. I checked out from him when he was immediately starting rumors about how much we paid CJ Leslie the second he didn't pick his boy Calipari.

Dumb question, but why would Davis "resign." Dude isn't getting another college job and he knows it and if he resigns he doesn't get his money (is that right?).

UNC has the right to fire him and not pay him if it is proved that he knew or should have known about these scandals. Basically Davis is going to be gone either way and not going to make any money either way so he's better off resigning in order to save face.

^but at the same time if he knows things implicating other programs it would be in UNC's best interest to pay him off and hope the NCAA doesn't dig deep enough.

Man this thread exploded. I need a refresher with stuff that's actually true.

1) 12 or so players didn't play against LSU.
2) LSU brought my blood pressure to a boil last Saturday. They should have dropped the hammer, so I hope they don't win another game just to make UNC's loss look worse.
3) All the players except for Austin will be in the practices for their next game.
4) John Blake resigns

Rumors:
Affair with the tutor.
A nuclear bomb will go off during a press conference tomorrow, a crater will stand where Chapel Hill now resides.

But seriously, the only 'bombshell' I would expect is that the dozen players will get a 2 game suspension where the LSU game already fills one of the two games requirement. That would be a bombshell to Duke/Pack fans.

Time will tell I guess. I mean it's not like someone sold a pair of shoes, so they should come out smelling like roses.

A national writer trying to take even the moral victory away from the Holes, priceless. He's of course, getting roasted over on IC.

Quote :
"Tom Dienhart
Rivals.com College Football Senior Writer

ATLANTA - For three quarters, this looked like the clunker everyone thought it would be.

The rankings said North Carolina was No. 18 and LSU was No. 21. But the rankings lied. LSU 30-10 going into the fourth quarter, thanks to a North Carolina roster depleted by suspensions.

T.J. Yates overcame a late fumble to get the Tar Heels in position to steal a win.
That's when LSU lost interest, letting the Tar Heels rally with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make it 30-24. The game ended with North Carolina throwing into the end zone on the final two plays.

It shouldn't have been this close, but it was.

"We had the opportunity to win a game in very convincing style, and our football team wasn't good enough do that," LSU coach Les Miles said.

Saturday night wasn't about anointing LSU as an SEC title contender; that was a poor performance against a depleted North Carolina team that had no business being in the game. Instead, Saturday night was about North Carolina and how it got in this state of disarray and where it goes from here.

UNC was jacked on emotion and adrenaline, showing the world it still had fight. But it still lost. And it will be difficult to muster that kind of energy week in and week out as the Heels wade deeper into the schedule with a roster that has been torn apart by an academic scandal and illegal contact with an agent.

"Our depth was put to the test," North Carolina coach Butch Davis said. "We had guys playing more than we thought. We probably played 55-60 kids and had walk-ons play who probably never thought they would play."

No one left the Georgia Dome thinking North Carolina wouldn't have won had it had its full roster. But no one knows for sure when - or even if - the missing players will return. That makes the rest of this once-promising season murky.

Every college football fan knows the story: Thirteen players were out, including seven starters - defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendric Burney, safeties Deunta Williams and Da'Norris Searcy, defensive end Robert Quinn and wide receiver Greg Little.

North Carolina's depth chart was so fluid that its PR folks handed out a photocopied "tentative" depth chart before the game. It was a mess - just like the start of the game for the Tar Heels.

On the first play, Tar Heel quarterback T.J. Yates' screen pass fell helplessly to the ground. On the second play, tailback Johnny White fumbled and LSU recovered on the UNC's 35. On North Carolina's second possession, Yates failed to handle a snap and LSU recovered on the UNC's 30. A second-quarter snap sailed over Yates' head and out of the end zone, resulting in a safety.

And on it went.

By the time LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Rueben Randle midway through the second quarter to give the Tigers a 30-10 lead, the game looked to be over. And it would have been had LSU not lost three second-half fumbles, which played a big part in the Bayou Bengals almost blowing that 20-point halftime lead.

"We came back in the second half," Yates said, "just believing that we could come back. We were depleted as is. Some guys went down in the game."

Two months ago, Davis' program looked poised to sneak out from behind the basketball program's vast shadow. The Heels were considered ACC contenders and looking for their first ACC title since Lawrence Taylor was a B.M.O.C. in 1980. Now, given the suspensions and continued investigation into the agent allegations, the Tar Heels look likely to finish fourth in their division.

Butch Davis has a tired team as UNC enters a bye week and awaits word on its suspended players.
UNC is a proud institution that likes to puff its chest over its academic prowess as a "public Ivy" school. That's what makes the alleged academic misdeeds difficult to swallow. In addition, this is a school that has had a clean NCAA record, dating to the basketball program's involvement in a point-shaving scandal in the 1960s.

Someone must answer for these problems. And that someone likely will be Davis.

"As I've have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this university," Davis said before the game. "We are disappointed the players' choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina."

It may have been the players' choices, but Davis still is ultimately responsible.

Davis is the same guy who was lauded for starting the cleanup work at Miami. Shortly after he took over as Hurricanes coach in 1995, the school was found to have committed several major NCAA violations under predecessor Dennis Erickson. Consequently, Miami was banned from postseason play in 1995 and also lost 31 scholarships over the next few seasons.

But Davis and his staff helped Miami rebuild, recruiting some incredible talent that was responsible for the 2001 national title, though he had left for the NFL after the 2000 season and missed out on the championship season. Davis also earned plaudits from the AFCA for outstanding graduation numbers in each of his six seasons in Coral Gables.

Now, Davis' future is cloudy. Had this season's team underachieved on the field, it wouldn't have been that big a deal at UNC, which always will be a basketball school. But an academic scandal plus an NCAA investigation?

If the Tar Heels remain shorthanded for an extended time, they could struggle to make it to the postseason. The Tar Heels are off next weekend, then play host to Georgia Tech on Sept. 18. A game at Rutgers and visits from East Carolina and Clemson follow. Later are road games against Miami and Florida State and a visit from Virginia Tech.

Saturday night, Davis wasn't ready to look that far ahead. His tam's second-half effort offers some hope. The offense showed life, with the much-maligned Yates throwing for 412 yards and three touchdowns.

Still, this wasn't supposed to be a night about rallying from a big deficit and still losing. This was supposed to be a night when North Carolina was going to announce its arrival as a program on the rise.

Instead, the Tar Heels leave with a loss and an uncertain future for the program and the coach. "

This thing has some amazing swings....folks on IC/Tarheel Insiders now seem to think w/blake gone it will all blow over with minimum suspensions, and no overall harm to the program.

This is the third time I have been up and down this rollercoaster, and there is always more bad news on the horizon for the heels so I will reserve judgment, but there are clearly two polar opposite views at this point as to what the outcome will be.

If you had told me a month ago that blake would be fired, and 10-15 players would receive some kind of suspension, and the national media would write so many negative articles, I would have been completely satisfied....so the rest is just gravy I guess!

That is because they are absolute idiots. There is no way it just "blows over."

95% of the fun of this has been to see Carolina fans puff themselves up full of bluster, only to get owned over and over again by the circumstances. It's like watching that video of the fat girl fly out of the swing on repeat. Every single time you know it's going to happen, and every single time, it's funnier than the last.

"Blows over" was probably the wrong way to put that. Essentially they think it is all coming to an end. 2-4 game suspensions for the cheaters, no Little/Austin for the season (or part of the season) and Blake getting roasted over a spit. Butch keeps his job, the "blue zone" gets built, they win 9 or 10 games and move on their merry way.

Don't know where else to put this but YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF UNC MEDIA BIAS:

The new iPad commercial with that jaunty piano song shows the e-book of David Sedaris's "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and then opens to the story called... you guessed it... "Go Carolina!" In Carolina blue no less.

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/story/8252274/

Quote :
"UNC head coach Butch Davis met with the media before practice Tuesday for the first time since associate head coach John Blake resigned from the program Sunday.

John Blake’s resignation came amid NCAA investigations into the school and Blake’s relationship with sports agent Gary Wichard. Blake felt that the resignation was necessary as his presence had become a distraction to the program.

“I think he felt that was the case and it was a distraction in his own life,” Davis said Tuesday.

Davis said he is satisfied with the votes of confidence the Chancellor Holden Thorp and Athletic Director Dick Baddour have expressed for his own job.

“I am, very much so,” Davis said. “Character, integrity and academics are some of the things they are emphasizing in the program.”

“We talk about academics all the time, if there are things we need to do to address the importance of academics then we’re gonna continue to do that and try to make them better,” said Davis."
