a guy from zionsville, indiana is unlikely to covet the duke job above all others, and very likely to hold out for the IU job.

I don't buy the whole "His dad said he's not coming" thing about Sean Miller, and I don't believe this "he just re-upped with Arizona" nonsense either. They're talking about putting 300k in an annuity for him for every year that he stays... big whoop.
Everyone seems to forget that:
1. The next coach that comes here will have a good percentage of his salary paid by whatever Athletic company wins the RFP to outfit us. Arizona's already a Nike school and has been for years. Nike's not going to give them more money just because their coach is doing well. Nike's going to look out for their own best interests and pay money to a school that isn't already a Nike school in order to welcome them into the fold. The main reason Nike didn't stick around during the Amato years was because of Lee Fowler's ineptitude and inability to drop Adidas for basketball like a bad fucking habit.
2. We have donors who make money in gobs and who will pour money out of their asshole to get us back to national prominence. Jim Goodknight - rumored to be willing to pay half of the coach's salary himself, Wendell Murphy and Lonnie Poole, plus a few others. 300k a year for an annuity ain't shit between those guys.
3. If the money that was being talked about was the real amount, then he'd be a fool to put himself out of play for that. 3.2 million a year puts any coach in the country in a top 5, if not top 3 position.
4. He'd be in a top 3 position in the ACC immediately, and he'd have the ability to become the coach of the dominant program in 6-8 years when both Roy and K retire.
If Arizona did offer up some money, that's great. Doesn't mean that we won't pull out all the stops to match it or BETTER it, leaving them up the creek without a paddle. Some statement from his dad does not automatically rule him out of the job.

It's been repeated by a lot of sportswriters who can't seem to believe it.
It's more than both Coach K and Bill Self's salaries, and honestly I think it's the number that we need to get a good, solid coach to get this program back to the National stage.
You have to spend money to make money, and I think everyone involved now at the top level in our school understands that.
3.2 million a year Coach + National TV exposure time would reap benefits immediately. Merchandising, increased enrollment numbers, increased ad revenue. It's a VERY small price to pay considering the potential windfalls.
Quote : | "and I thought kiljadn was just here for the soccer" |
obviously the financial side of sports interests me greatly - I mean I have been the only guy who talks about that sort of shit in the soccer threads as well
you'd be surprised how much I read about that stuff and don't even mention, too. this whole situation seems very similar to me. NC State Athletics is a business, regardless of how much personal pride we put into it. It's not all about bragging rights, and tons of people lose sight of that. It's about having a financially viable model that will continue to make money year over year. We've been in an unfortunate position for the past few years to not have an administration that understands that.
about the Goodnight stuff - I don't know one way or the other if the rumor is true or not. But it makes sense to me. He's a businessman, and he has to know that donating money to his alma mater in any way will come back to him tenfold. Increased COE enrollment from kids who love NC State basketball because they saw them winning a big basketball game? Increased visibility for SAS. Bigger candidate pool, bigger pool of potential customers familiar with his products and his brand.
Why do you guys think UNC has a national following? There are kids that come from out of state just because of basketball - they'll say that it's because UNC offered the best whatever program, but they wouldn't even have looked at the school if it weren't for basketball. You can't put a dollar amount on that sort of publicity.

now that stevens has reached two final fours with butler, the idea of him coming here is absolute lunacy, he already has that program to an elite level so it makes no sense, the only way he'll leave is for a top 5 program years from now 3/26/2011 10:53:15 PM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
Elite level program perhaps, but does Butler have elite level money?
But it does remind me of the Calipari situation, where he took a mid-major to elite status and stayed there until a top 5 program came after him.

I dunno man ... throw a 10 year, 3 mill contract at a guy like that ...
Lots of incentive to move now. Dude gets the best out of his players. Would be a steal, but you have to throw the package at him and see what happens (same for miller, really).
As for Miller, I think pops wanted to get a bug in the ear about giving Archie a chance, and see what came out of it. I really don't think Miller is a dead "NO" yet ... but the posturing supports that he's probably super close it.
