Well, the last time I was there was for the first show they did there after it reopened, so it's been a while.

^I HATE that I missed that show. Had to work late to cover the hockey game, which sucks because I was looking forward to Sharon Jones for months.
Tuesday at the Pour House
Consider the Source
They're playing another free show. The last one was amazing, and it would be rad if Raleigh would have a better showing than 20 or so people. Seriously, anyone even remotely interested in instrumental, prog, fusion, middle eastern, jazz, etc. should definitely check them out. Super nice guys as well.

I have only seen the Dap-Kings once. It was at old Kings, and I showed up on the recommendation of DJ Castro, not knowing who they were or having heard any of their music.
Absolutely one of the three best shows I have ever seen, and so good that I'm afraid to see them again because I'm worried about being disappointed, despite it being clear that they kill it every night. 3/28/2011 3:09:08 AM |

speaking of terrible trends, i went to amos' southend for explosions in the sky last night. the band and the show were fantastic, but security at amos' is the most aggressive bunch i've ever seen anywhere. i've only been there a few times, but it seems like they're always yelling violently at people, even when there's really no reason for it. they seem like the kind of guys that would be super eager to start knocking heads. it's ridiculous and it puts a damper on the show every time i've been at amos'.
i mean, it's explosions in the sky. i don't think you're in danger of a riot on any scale. everything is under control without you guys screaming at the top of your lungs every two seconds. just had to get that off my chest. one of the many reasons i don't like going to charlotte.
other than that, though, i had a good time at the show. explosions in the sky are a very good band live. 4/4/2011 9:12:19 AM |

last night i ran into a very drunk dude who had just purchased three warpaint CDs and couldn't stop talking about how awesome they were...but he was also very upset that tiesto didn't play his favorite song

i guess i get the back to the dive bar concept, but why 4 nights slims? They could just as easily do a kings / motorco / 506 run or something like that, all significantly better venues and they'd still fill out each place. 4/5/2011 1:39:08 PM |

don't they have like 20 songs? I guess they're working on new ones 4/5/2011 1:41:53 PM |

If the setlists are really going to be "vastly different," I bet there will be a lot of covers. Even if they're working on new songs, I doubt they have like 20 new songs. Just an odd idea all around. I'm sure they'll pack Slim's to the rafters all four nights, though, so I guess mission accomplished. 4/5/2011 2:10:47 PM |

vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I guess "vastly different" might be hyperbole, but if six songs are different every night in a 15 song set, or songs are rearranged in order with original segues for different arrangements, that's a pretty significant set difference compared to a touring band that plays the same thing every night with one or two changes based on mood. Also, at least one set will be all covers.
In addition to that, I'd bet that if you go all four nights, you may hear a new song the first night and again on the third night, and it will already have changed dramatically. Of course they could play a bigger room/do a run in a bigger room at this point, but the idea behind doing it this way is to have fun with a small, appreciative group that won't mind if some stuff falls apart or they try something wacky and fail at it. 4/5/2011 6:07:45 PM |

I set up this show with Denver's Woodsman on April 24th (Easter Sunday) at Kings. here's a new interview/artist profile with them http://alteredzones.com/posts/1190/artist-profile-woodsman/
also playing with 3 other bands, including Tjutjuna, heavy psychedelic space-rock band. haven't heard the others yet. show should be good.
