Mack is an alum of Xavier. This makes him more likely to stay. After seeing him in person last year and this year, I don't think he's a great coach. Good coach yes, but great no. He's riding the wave of success that Miller put together. 3/27/2011 12:16:16 AM |

FWIW Miller already had an annuity in his contract. I dont remember if it was 300k or 200k but basically they put it in a fund or some shit after every year and he doesnt get it until he's been there 5 years (so he already has 2 banked but if he bails on them now he gets nothing)
That's included in his reported salary along with a Nike/IMG deal. His current contract from Zona is "only" 1.6 million
No idea if the reported 3.2mil we offered is base or with all that extra shit thrown in 3/27/2011 4:53:15 AM |

Don't think that's right.
I've read that his salary from Arizona is 1.6 mil, PLUS 400k per year from Nike, Plus $300k per year from the rollover 'slush fun' thing he gets after year five.
That puts his salary at $2.3 mil.
I know he's got a TON of incentives. Some show on Sirius radio was saying that he's unlocked like $500k in incentives by making it to the elite 8

Fuck, Roy lost to Georgia Tech by 20.
(btw, it's funny that you say the coach lost to certain teams...I'm only following your line)

Holy fuck. But you know what...he gets to the tournament and wins in it. That's all I want. Someone who can get us to the tournament and win some games. Herb could get us to the tourney, but had trouble winning in it. And we're not getting Stevens...and probably not Miller or any other big name. So give me Smart.
(I also wonder about where Stevens will end up...but it won't be here. However...everyone saying he's waiting for the IU job to open up....I don't see Crean going anywhere any time soon. Maybe Duke...but I still think they pass the torch to a former assistant. Who knows...)

I'm not following this stuff closely...but can someone tell me why any other basketball coach in the world outside of college couldn't do this job?
It seems like to me we could get a good international coach for not a ton of money and ALSO hire a guy that knows how to work the recruiting aspects of it? Most of the guys NCSU is going to recruit aren't going to the NBA...but wouldn't it be a pretty good recruiting tool to tell them they have an "in" into the European leagues because their current coach has so many connections?

His stock has never been higher. Will he be able to get those same results without Mack and Howard? Can he replace those players (on the surface his recruiting for the past two years hasn't been stellar)? Howard is gone this year and Mack is a Junior. Those are probably nagging concerns for him right now. So maybe he takes the opportunity to build somewhere with a better basketball infrastructure. Accepting a job in which it is easier to recruit top level talent would probably only further his reputation and put him in an even better position for a top 5 job.
We have something to offer him that Butler cannot offer (history, facilities, fan base, conference prestige). I still think we have a better chance with Stevens than we do Miller (granted I think both are very very slim chances)
Quote : | "Most of the guys NCSU is going to recruit aren't going to the NBA" | I certainly hope this isn't true. If so lets just call herb back. Right now we have NBA caliber talent on the roster if the next coach isn't able to continue this trend that is truly disturbing.

There must be a problem with how we are defining contender. If we get into the dance that means we weren't bottom dwelling. Under Herbs teams the years we got into the dance we were generally a contender for the title.

Quote : | "I don't buy the whole "His dad said he's not coming" thing about Sean Miller, and I don't believe this "he just re-upped with Arizona" nonsense either. They're talking about putting 300k in an annuity for him for every year that he stays... big whoop.
Everyone seems to forget that:
1. The next coach that comes here will have a good percentage of his salary paid by whatever Athletic company wins the RFP to outfit us. Arizona's already a Nike school and has been for years. Nike's not going to give them more money just because their coach is doing well. Nike's going to look out for their own best interests and pay money to a school that isn't already a Nike school in order to welcome them into the fold. The main reason Nike didn't stick around during the Amato years was because of Lee Fowler's ineptitude and inability to drop Adidas for basketball like a bad fucking habit.
2. We have donors who make money in gobs and who will pour money out of their asshole to get us back to national prominence. Jim Goodknight - rumored to be willing to pay half of the coach's salary himself, Wendell Murphy and Lonnie Poole, plus a few others. 300k a year for an annuity ain't shit between those guys.
3. If the money that was being talked about was the real amount, then he'd be a fool to put himself out of play for that. 3.2 million a year puts any coach in the country in a top 5, if not top 3 position.
4. He'd be in a top 3 position in the ACC immediately, and he'd have the ability to become the coach of the dominant program in 6-8 years when both Roy and K retire.
If Arizona did offer up some money, that's great. Doesn't mean that we won't pull out all the stops to match it or BETTER it, leaving them up the creek without a paddle. Some statement from his dad does not automatically rule him out of the job." |
I'm glad you posted this so that i didn't have to type it all out.

Guy will have his choice of jobs, and there are some big schools with openings right now. Missouri, Tennesse, NC State, and potentially others if an NBA team tries to snag a big name coach like they do almost every year.
Stevens will probably be mentioned for any major opening. I hope we get him, he's young, smart, and has proven that he's capable of making big runs in the NCAA tournament. He's also, if I recall correctly, the fastest ever to 100 wins. Why would you not want the guy or at least go after him? 3/27/2011 1:57:56 PM |
