Haha, it looks like RPD has a nice lighting setup for their mug shots. Maybe a gold foil umbrella to give it a nice warm glow?

looks like the same crappy built-in flash with plastic diffuser above the camera that they use at DMV with the latino PP filter (which can account for the gold like discoloring? lol).

On another note, I notice a few passport places who uses medium format camera's... doesn't that seem overkill and seems like a government conspiracy to take HD pictures of facial features...

Passport "places" are anybody with a camera more or less.. I had mine taken at some random drug store. They used a random ass 2MP Kodak piece of shit.. I had my D50 in the car and offered for them to use it instead and they wouldn't do it

So instead I had some super grainy picture that got questioned everywhere I went

you know you can get someone else to take the pictures, print two copies and submit them with your passport as your pictures. I did that with all of our employee's at my work place since many of them have to get their Visa's and passports ready for our China, UK and Hong Kong offices. I even just shot them at small jpeg sizes.

sony uses zeiss lenses... and they aren't canon or nikon style. not exactly sure what a style is. canon and nikon are the go to brands but honestly you probably won't be disappointed with the quality you get from a sony either. most of the sony's use the same sensor as their nikon brothers anyway. go with what feels comfortable to you. go with what you can understand the easiest.

personally i think sony's handle like crap. but i know people who swear by them.

by the way, saw photorob over the weekend. saw some of his work. boy got some skillz.

I have a D40x, and I was using a friends Sony the other day that is of a comparable setup (entry-level dslr, can't remember the model). Had some nice features that mine doesn't, like bracketing and internal steady shot...but that's where the pros end.

The build quality was low...felt really cheap in my hands. The ergonomics were horrible, the layout of the buttons were either non-intuitive or outright annoying. The computer wasn't very smart, not very good at metering or choosing proper exposure times or apertures for the priority modes. The LCD screen was too small and the kit lens sucked.

I dunno, I'm sure it has redeeming qualities but I couldn't wait to get my Nikon back in my hands.

i think sony can use old minolta lenses as well, gives them a lot of choices since i think they have AF in the bodies

looks like the lighting in your house isn't too favorable, play with the white balance on your camera. if it has an incandescent parameter, try increasing it there
