Roy Mangram, although listed as a safety, will likely play OLB. The same may be true for D.J. Green.

There's not a huge need for a safety in this class IMO. There are a couple guys who are LB/S tweeners if we run into trouble. I think we need a QB, 3 DL, another OL, and then either a LB or S (probably LB)

Justin Taylor could be deciding between us and VT in the next week or two. He probably would have already been committed to VT if it had not been for his recent trip. He supposedly will be visiting again this weekend, but this time with his mother. He'd be a good get considering we probably aren't going to land Alfy Hill. He has a pretty stout offer list too, which is great considering he's only played one year of organized football.

Justin Taylor
Weakside DE
Norwood (NC) South Stanly

Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 222 lbs
Forty: 4.71 secs
GPA: 3.0

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
Arkansas
Auburn
Kentucky
Louisville
N.C. State
Virginia Tech
East Carolina
Western Carolina

Georgia Tech
North Carolina
Tennessee

Found this little nugget on a board that had a thread covering the Tar Heels and their camp.
Quote :
"Justin Taylor (Norwood (N.C.) South Stanly), who has seen a huge rise in his recruiting stock in the last month, was among the new participants this morning. Understandably, Taylor was among one of the more raw campers – his technique was constantly being tweaked by coaches. His technique can easily be improved with good coaching, but his size-speed ratio is something that cannot be coached. In drills, he showed quick feet, and tremendous range and change-of-direction ability."

I think Kareem Martin would also be a good DE pickup. He has an outstanding offer list; Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, Penn State, Stanford, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, East Carolina have all offered.

If the dream of having a Hill and Hunter combination falls through then a combo of Taylor and Martin would suit me just fine.

i think taylor is ours. He wants to be close to home, and raleigh is about an hour and a half closer than blacksburg i think(don't quote me on that though). Also, you don't take mama to see a school unless you're SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY interested.....though i think everyone would understand that

From an ESPN recruiting blog

Quote :
"NC State landing Palmetto State sleepers

Thursday, June 25, 2009 | Print Entry

Posted by JC Shurburtt

North Carolina State picked up a commitment earlier this week from defensive tackle/offensive guard Thomas Teal (Bennettsville, S.C./Marlboro County). Sources say that the 6-foot-1, 315-pound Teal reminded some of the Wolfpack coaches of former Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji, who was the No. 9 overall pick by the Packers in April's NFL Draft.

Of course NC State head coach Tom O'Brien and most of his staff recruited Raji to Boston College.

In recent yeas, the Wolfpack have also done a good job of landing sleepers out of the Palmetto State, including incoming freshmen wide receiver Quinton Payton (Anderson, S.C./T.L. Hanna), offensive lineman Denzelle Good (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney), tight end/athlete Asa Watson (Rock Hill, S.C./Rock Hill) and linebacker Sterling Lucas (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson).

Payton and Good are quality prospects at their respective positions. Watson has been called one of the best looking prospects on the 2009 recruiting trail by at least one SEC coach. While, Lucas played as a true freshman last year and is second on the team, according to most preseason depth charts.

Granted, all five of these prospects are early in their careers, but if you combine the two Carolinas, recent statistical compilations show that there are 92 current NFL players produced from the two states. That's only behind California, Texas and Florida and greater than Georgia, Louisiana and Ohio. So it's important for NC State, Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina and East Carolina to recruit South Carolina hard, just as it's important for Clemson and South Carolina to recruit the Tar Heel State.

Defensive back/athlete DeAnthony Green (Macon, Ga./Westside) also committed to the Wolfpack. Green impressed at the Atlanta Nike Combine in March and is a versatile athlete who will help NC State -- no matter where he plays."

So I rewatched "The Program" tonight. I kind of wonder how much of that stuff happens at programs across the country, and I certainly don't hope it's going on here. I imagine some of that is going on at Florida in this off-season with as many arrests and problems that they've had.

They shot most of it at the University of South Carolina and Duke University, but their is a skating scene between Halle Berry and Omar Epps that was shot at the Ice House in Cary.

^ here's what some ND forum is saying:

Quote :
"Amerson- from Definite Possibility to Highly Unlikely- Two cancelled visits almost always is a bad sign. Add to that word that he is leaning toward NC State after visiting there 3 times this month and Amerson becomes Highly Unlikely. Time to focus resources on Bailey, Riley, and Carrington."

The thing with Amerson will be if he commits before Johnson does. We only have 1 safety spot(already have 3 commits but I think at least one will convert to OLB). And Johnson is scheduled to visit later this week, so I think TOB will get serious with Amerson over the next couple of days so he has every chance to commit in case Johnson does.

If I had to guess I think Amerson is the #1 safety on our board, so I really hope he sees the importance of getting on board early.

Well from what I've heard Mangram is almost assuredly going to end up being a LB, and Green may very well move to LB as well. They just have the size and frame to move there. Couldn't Singer be moved to CB? He's only 5-11.

I inquired about Green moving to OLB and it seems he was recruited as a safety so all expectations are he'll start out at safety. I don't think Singer or Mangram will be playing S, but we took 2 last year and 1 the year before that used a redshirt. So I don't really see us taking both Johnson and Amerson. We don't have a ton of scholarships to give out this year, so I think the coaches are having to be a little restrictive. I think they wanted to offer AJ Marshall at CB but they decided early on not to take a CB this year.

What effect does redshirting have on the scholarship? ie does it still count against our total?

& what about the idea of redshirting some of the weaker ones and letting some of the stronger ones play so we can take both?

Good news (i guess) re: Kendall Moore and Prince Shembo.

Basically Moore and Shembo are seriously being wooed by ND and they didn't commit on this visit. Moore and his parents want him to commit by 8/15 and he's still talking about taking visits. Shembo named us in his top 5.

^passing teams will typicially try to put their biggest guys at OT as to protect the QB's backside from an edge rusher. running teams typically will put the biggest guys at either guard or tackle depending on where they like to run to.

He might have a slow first-step and the coach moved him inside to guard to help him with recruiting, who knows. I'm sure if we land him TOB and Horton will know exactly where to put him on the OL to help him/us the most.

Kendall Moore News

http://www.highschoolot.com/content/blogpost/5474370/

Quote :
"N.C. State, Duke on Moore's shortlist; announcement date set

By Nick Stevens, HighSchoolOT.com

RALEIGH — Southeast Raleigh linebacker Kendall Moore, one of the most sought after recruits from North Carolina in the Class of 2010, will announce his decision on July 11, and two in-state schools are in his final five – Duke and N.C. State.

“[The attention] is great. I’ve played football since I was six-years-old and it feels like it is finally paying off,” Moore said. But he admitted that the recruiting process has brought some extra stress.
“It does add stress, and I’m actually in the process of trying to fix that problem so I can focus on the season and not have it as a distraction,” he said.

Moore will announce his decision during a press conference at Southeast Raleigh High School at 5 p.m., on July 11. His five finalists have changed from earlier this month, and in no particular order, they include N.C. State, Duke, South Carolina, Florida State and Notre Dame.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 230-pounds, Moore recorded nearly 120 tackles and six sacks last season, and he also caught seven touchdown passes as a tight end for the Bulldogs. The rising senior records a 4.58 forty yard dash time, and benches 320 pounds.

Rivals.com ranks Moore as a four star prospect and the 14th best player at his position. The recruiting Web site also named him their top 250, ranking him the No. 167 overall player in his class.

N.C. State was the first team to offer Moore, and he said that meant a lot to him.

“[N.C. State] has a great program, and I feel like they’re definitely up-and-coming,” Moore said. “I actually saw in the newspaper this weekend where they were picked to win their division, and there are some other really good teams there.”

When Moore revealed his top five teams earlier in the month, Duke was not one of them. Today, Moore said Duke is definitely in the mix.

“Academics are important to me, and with a Duke degree, no matter what I want to do after college – whether it’s the NFL or something else – a degree from Duke is really good,” Moore said.

Academics are important to Moore. In all three seasons at Southeast Raleigh, Moore has been named to the academic all-conference team for the Greater Neuse River.

This past weekend, Moore visited Notre Dame and came away impressed.

“It was nice, and I enjoyed it a lot,” he said. “I wanted to find a little bit more about them, and now I feel like I know enough about them to make a decision.”

Moore has already visited South Carolina three times, and has also gone to Florida State.

Although Moore hasn’t made his decision yet, he knows what factors will play into the decision.

“It’s just going to be the best fit for me as a player and academically,” Moore said. “I’m looking for a good program, a program on the rise.”

Moore also said he would look at where they want to play him. Some schools are looking at playing him at linebacker, others at defensive end, and some at both positions.

The rising senior had at least 14 Division-I offers. Other than the five left on Moore's list, Clemson, East Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Wake Forest and West Virginia all presented offers. There was also a lot of interest from Tennessee.

Southeast Raleigh will begin their season on Aug. 21, at Holly Springs. The Bulldogs are expected to be one of the top teams in the Triangle this year, and Moore feels that they can contend for the state championship.

“We practice every day with it in mind that we want to be the best,” said Moore. “Last year we made it to the third round and this year we want to exceed that and maybe get a state championship on the way.”

Moore said the team is practicing “two times harder” than they did last season, and couldn’t give a specific example of where the team might need to improve before the season.

“We are strong across the board, and right now we look good,” Moore said. “We just need to keep working hard and just getting better.”"

it'd be nice to get some love from a local star after being screwed by Wall and Leslie

anybody else read the article on Major Bryant on PP? He lists us as his favorite (we haven't offered though), but he seems way too small to play at MLB (he's 5-10 206 lbs)

Wow Stanford already has 21 commitments! 3 4*'s, 16 3*'s, and 2 2*'s. Their class looks pretty solid for them.

^Harbaugh is a solid coach, they'll be be able to compete for 2nd in the Pac-10 in a year or two...which is impressive considering the restrictions on recruiting.

I saw a thread on PP labeled "Prep QB Critical of State Camp"... anyone know what the deal is with that? Have any QB's been offered as of yet?

^^just some 1* nobody who 6 months ago said his favorites were teams like UNC, Tennessee, Virginia, etc......and now he can't even get offers from James Madison or Villanova. Bitched and moaned about only getting 3 reps at camp. Guess it only took our staff 3 reps to notice how horrible he was

Did anyone see the video of Torian Box on PP or read the Interview. I think we got a serious sleeper. He has incredible footwork and looks well polished already.

Here's a teaser (it's a premium article, i don't wanna put out too much): "The [NCSU] coaches told me i was already faster than some of the OL they already have."

This makes me very happy.

I said right after watching his video that I thought he had good footwork. I'm glad to know that I was right, as I'm sure our coaches have seen way more film on him than just the short highlight film that I saw. They've probably seen him in person too. Box's footwork is what definitely stands out. I kind of wonder how many more schools would have gone after him or how high he would be rated right now if the people at the Atlanta Scout.com Combine would have let him work out at OG (which is what he was supposed to be working out as) rather than forcing him to work out at DT.

the other cool thing is that when u watch the vid, whoever that kid locked up, either got pancaked or knocked on the ground, and at the very least, no one got away from him, LB's, DT's, DE's. I know its highschool, but if you can't dominate who you play against in highschool, there's no way you're going to a D-IA school in a major conference and do anything.
