Pretty sure CJ's agent is Drew Rosenhaus. He's definitely out there schemin' on something.
I thought CJ got a little bit of the Eddie Lacy syndrome this year. He came into camp a little out of shape and promptly pulled his hamstring early. That ends up getting him put on temp IR. When he came back, he barely did anything for like 3 weeks and finally made some plays near the end.
You could tell he was a good 20-30lbs over where he was 2 seasons ago.

Yeah he definitely upped his value in the playoffs. It might just be time to move on and add a more reliable healthy player.
For all the negativity around his deal he produced relatively well over it prior to his injury last season.
He was solid against the run, often drew more attention, and had consistent sack numbers. He was slightly overpaid but most free agents end up being overpaid. Given his age at the time of free agency his deal was semi-reasonable because it was less risky than the typical 29-31 yo that can really blow up on you 2/10/2016 8:39:10 AM |

There are also a number of defensive ends available in free agency. Maybe Olivier Vernon would rather come here then get overpaid to stay in Miami and lose to the Patriots every year. We could definitely get him for the same or less than what we owe CJ next year. There's just no way he stays without taking a significant pay cut.

Adam Schein was going on one of his rants today about Cam saying "Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." He was like "Is Cam saying that Thomas Davis is a LOSER? Is Cam saying that Luke Kuechly is a LOSER? Russell Wilson lost a Super Bowl last year, is Cam saying that Russell Wilson is a LOSER?"
I wonder if he thinks Vince Lombardi is calling Luke Kuechly a loser. 2/10/2016 5:19:07 PM |

I'd love Weddle, but with Berry likely staying in KC, he'll be the #1 S FA available. Saw some suggestions that the Jags were ready to throw a big contract at him, so I just can't see us getting him unless he's willing to take quite a bit less money to go for a SB.
It's sad how much cap space some of these teams have, think 5-6 teams have over $50 million available, I see some really inflated contracts looming. 2/11/2016 8:50:52 AM |

^^^ the difference is not all players that give the mumbling, sulking, "I'm taking my basketball and going home" interview ALSO do the "woo hoo! look at me look at me look at me I'm dancing look at me!!! I'm Superman" routine. Some do, and they get called out. If you intentionally draw attention to yourself and consider yourself better than others when things go good, then you have to deal with that attention when things go bad, cant just run and hide. Plus, it wasnt just "any game", it was the biggest sporting event of the year.

i understand people not liking how he handled the post game presser. i completely get that and i think we all pretty much agree that it was not a great look. but i just don't really get this attitude of he has to act this way or he has to grow up now or he has to deal with that attention when things go bad. no he doesn't. dude's been successful as hell and doesn't really have to change. people want him to change for their own purposes...but he does not have to. this is pretty much who he is and i'm ok with it. i get why people are not ok with it, but demanding he act how they want him to act is a little strange, imo.

Panthers void the contracts of both Harper and Cotchery today. Helps the cap, but hate losing Cotchery.

Makes sense. We drafted funchess to take his place. It really hurts to have a non starting receiver who doesn't play special teams. It's pretty much a requirement for #4 and #5 receivers otherwise you end up shorthanded at depth at another position.
Definitely helped us the last two years though.
Harper was kinda an obvious cut especially after his injury. Solid contributor but we need an impact safety badly 2/11/2016 9:05:49 PM |

Rem-job is a tricky one. I'm sure they're going to bring in competition for the RT spot, so they're going to need to get him on a cheap deal in case he gets beat out in camp (hopefully). 2/18/2016 9:46:29 AM |

Remmers isn't tricky at all he's restricted. If we offer 1 year 2.2 million he's ours, no one is trading a 2nd rd pick for him.
Or we can offer like 1.4 or something and chance losing him. He was too productive to chance an expensive free agent. Way better to use the cap room on a pass rusher.
Guess we decided we needed more youth and health behind ealy and I agree with that. Especially if we end up reaching a deal with johnson
The norman deal will likely drag on awhile since we have the franchise tag leverage. Id be surprised if we reach a long term deal. Short is just more important to lock up

Your post indicated you didn't realize he was restricted free agent.. 2.2m is extremely cheap for a competent tackle..
Most starting centers make double that..
100% we are bringing him back it's a ultra low risk 1 year deal onow a guy who played well last year.
We have no one waiting in the wings and continuity is key on the offensive line. It'd just be crazy to make any risky changes this off season at key positions after we went 15-1 and made the super bowl.
This a year to welcome Benjamin back, clear out a few declining veterans, and use the cap space revamping our secondary and beefing up our pass rush.
I doubt we make any real changes on offense other than adding a late round rb to compete with Stewart and add depth. I expect Tolbert back, too good of a fit. Possibly start grooming a tackle or guard. 2/18/2016 2:13:48 PM |

Isn't the fourth rounder last year Williams viewed as the potential long term solution at one of the tackle spots? I'm not sure of his development thus far, but you'd think he'd at least get a chance to compete with Remmers for the RT spot in camp this year, and possibly take over at LT once Oher's contract expires after next year if he shows marked improvement. I still think we'll target an OT in the first three rounds in this years draft, but they liked Williams enough to trade up for him. 2/18/2016 2:40:31 PM |
face All American 8503 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah forgot about him and I have no idea how hes developing obviously but you don't let remmers go for 1 yr 2.2. Even if he loses the battle in training camp it's not a disaster to have good depth there at that expiring price.
If it required a multi year deal it's definitely possible we'd lose him but just no way as rfa 2/18/2016 2:53:58 PM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah I assumed we'd bring Tolbert and Remmers back. Remmers can either hold down the RT spot until a draft pick(or Williams) is ready to take the starting job or he can be a great back-up for us.
I imagine we'll offer Tolbert just enough to keep him honestly. We need him, but he really needs us too.
Since we just signed another punter, think we still go after Nortman? 2/18/2016 6:25:20 PM |

Yeah, with Luke, TD, Shaq, Klein and then Mayo and Jacobs all under contract for next season, linebacker is the one position we need 0 focus on this offseason. Definitely need to look at offensive line depth especially at the tackle positions, defensive end depth (even if we re-work CJ's contract and he comes back) and the most important position is the secondary (we need another starting level outside corner and probably another starting level safety). Wide receiver, we should be in pretty good shape with Benjamin, Funchess, Ginn and Brown, but it sure would be nice to either draft or bring in thru free agency another solid speed receiver to complement Benjamin and Funchess. RB we should be in pretty good shape also assuming stewart is back, with whitaker, CAP and hopefully tolbert as backups. Overall, with all of our core pieces coming back and salary cap space to work with plus the draft, no reason whatsoever we shouldn't be competing for another NFC championship next season. 2/19/2016 9:54:55 AM |

Told ya we'd franchise Josh norman.
Now Mario might make a lot of sense for us. He's probably in the 3/$30 range..still think gettleman would rather draft one and maybe find a lower priced veteran though
I'd give us like a 20% chance of working out a deal for norman now. It just makes much more sense to let him play it out... hell it might even make sense to franchise him again next year. Tying up long term money in cb probably has the worst return of any position in the nfl the last decade

I disagree i think the predominant opinion was "we gotta lock up norman we gotta pay him" and i was always consistent that i disagree with that sentiment. I'd franchise him because he's old and could fall off anyday just like most corners.
ROI on corners is nasty because they don't age well and tend to suffer extreme drop-offs with any injuries. Also, corner back is largely dependent on your pass rush and your help in the secondary.
Long term money should typically be reserved for qb, pass rush, pass protection. It starts to get hairy with receivers because you end up with a lot of guys like demaryius Thomas who fall off a cliff right when they are ready to cash in on big deals. His contract will cripple them for years.
Long term money should rarely be used on running backs. Linebackers are a little bit of a different specimen because guys lIke Houston or miller are really pass rushers. Obviously you can make exceptions for kuechly or Urlacher types but you rarely want to invest much on inside lb. These guys are rare difference makers.
Safeties tend to age better so if you get a reed or chancellor type it's a little different than an average replaceable guy. Also the better your team is I'd say the more important a veteran is since mistakes in the secondary are brutal to your chances in big games 3/1/2016 5:14:05 PM |
