Back-to-back games twice, with Tampa Bay being the 2nd game both times. Good that we have a relatively easy game as the 2nd, but I'd really rather have TB first both times and get those wins out of the way (cocky/confident thinking i know, but what's the point of speculation if you're not going to be arrogant).
Any 3 wins will give us 94 points. Five wins by the Caps give them 94, and we own the tiebreakers. So essentially, any 3 wins clinches the division title. 3 wins plus 1 more point clinches the outright title. Any losses by the Caps make it that much easier. (Any 3 wins also gives us 20 after the all-star break.) Our record vs Washington this season is 4-2-1 (SO loss) (one game remaining), total score 21-16 in favor of the Canes, 1-2 in Washington (one game remaining), 3-0-1 in Raleigh (SO loss).
Any 2 wins gives us the clinch over Florida. 1 and a half wins give us the tie. Our record vs Florida this season is 5-2 (one win in SO) (one game remaining), total score 22-20 in favor of the Canes, 2-2 in Florida (one win in SO), 3-0 in Raleigh (one game remaining). 3/26/2008 2:14:09 PM |

Technically Washington could still end up with the tiebreaker. From a common sense perspective though you're right. 3/26/2008 2:26:48 PM |

^^^ Maybe this is nitpicking, but I far prefer just using the magic number to wading through all that stuff. 3/26/2008 3:05:32 PM |
tl All American 8430 Posts user info edit post |
^ Sure, I kinda agree, but the magic number is a little bit ... disconnected (?) from the actual results. It does take all the results from both teams into account, but it's cleaner to say that 3 games clinches the title and that's that. But then you can wander off on a tangent really easily (like I did) and start talking about what if the other team loses, etc, in which case the magic number comes in as the easier solution.
And really, most of the shit that I posted is worthless (home and away records) considering the tie-breaking procedures:
Quote : | "1 - The team with the greater number of wins
2 - The team with the higher number of points in games between the tied teams Note: If there are more than two teams tied, and one or more of the teams has a greater number of games against the tied teams than the other tied teams, the first game played in the city that has the extra game is not counted. When more than two teams are tied, the percentage of points earned in games with each other determines the seed (odd game not counted).
3 - The team with the greater positive differential between goals scored and goals scored against" |
So, to expand on ^^'s point: Say that Washington wins our next matchup in regulation and the two teams end up tied in the standings with the following playing out: Caps get 5 wins; Canes get 1 win and 4 OTLs. Final standings would be: Canes 42-30-10 (94 pts); Caps 43-31-8 (94 pts). Tiebreak 1: Canes wins = 42 Caps wins = 43 Caps win the tiebreak. (This situation is also possible if {2} Canes get [0 wins, 1 loss, 4 OTLs] (41-31-10 = 92) and Caps get [4 wins, 1 loss] (42-32-8 = 92) or if {3} Canes get [0 wins, 0 losses, 5 OTLs] (41-30-11 = 93) and Caps get [4 wins, 1 OTL] (42-31-9 = 93)) (wow that wasn't worth it at all....)
As far as I can tell, those are the only possible situations that we can tie Washington in the standings but lose the tiebreak. It's possible for Washington to beat us outright in the standings, and of course it's possible for us to beat them outright. All other ties would give us the tiebreak. If they beat us in the next head-to-head matchup and we finish tied in the standings and tied with the same # of wins, we would go to tiebreak #2: Canes vs Washington = 4-3-1 = 9 points Washington vs Canes = 4-4 = 8 points Canes win. The Canes cannot lose this tiebreaker no matter what if it comes to it.
So, having said all that, the Magic Number is 7 for outright victory.

So... we are going to be hanging out in the lot again before the Panthers game on 4/4. I am going to bring a grill and some food. Anyone is welcome to join us, of course. Same place as last time, if anyone needs directions or info, just PM me. More than likely me and Sweden will be out there getting things started around 1 or 2, I know its early but its the only chance we have left to send Olli golfing with a grimace.
we will be working on this:

What's the tiebreaker if we tie with Boston or Philly?

1. Wins 2. Points earned head to head (better record) 3. Greater difference between GF & GA

its not that bad yet. we just have to take care of business against the teams we should beat. We ought to be able to handle Tampa and Atlanta at home, those should be the easiest 4 points. If we get those, that forces Washington to win 3 of their last 4 to tie us, where we would have the tiebreak.

well based on the record anyway, Florida shouldn't be a problem either.. and it looks like their playoff push again fails unless they have a miracle or something, so hopefully that will be an easier win
even more important is that they realize they aren't out of it yet and play like their lives depend on it saturday night 3/27/2008 9:47:18 PM |
