Cuomo said he might run as an independent? So I guess like a 4 way with adams and the mamdani guy, and then whoever the repubs put up?

Yeah the general could get weird. Blue states and cities aren’t as monolithic as Fox News makes them out to be. This is going to be a slog

Even if he runs in the general, even if he wins, this is likely enough of a stain to keep him out of the 2028 national field, which is good.

I wouldn’t get too excited about a Mamdani win. It’s the NYC mayoral race, for one. NYC is not the rest of the country. He was also running against an accused womanizer. He was also running against the establishment there in NYC, of which people there are tired.

Mamdani’s platform would be far too polarizing to use on the national stage.

I know you guys don’t think a Democratic moderate would get things done for your party, but I believe that’s what we will need in 2028.

For fuck’s sake, I just want a return to civility and professionalism in the WH.

And maybe a state department that isn’t run from Truth Social.

You're making leaps and jumps of what folks are happy about. The defeat of cuomo is good in and of itself, even if it had been by another centrist. Showing that the establishment and money don't ALWAYS win is also nice. Opening some folks eyes to the cowardice of many topics figures that were silent and the willingness of other to openly endorse a creep is yet another benefit.

Nationally, the only benefit may be what I have started above, but I'll take it.

As someone left of center im happy someone left of center won a primary, too. But he still has to win a general and, more importantly, govern. And personally his win doesn't make me think left of center has a better shot, even at state level.

-building affordable housing
-why Cuomo sucks

The rent freeze to me is the most potentially breaking action— that could cause all sorts of negative effects.

But the rest of them seem doable and would be beneficial. Will be interesting to see how much he can actually get done

Seems like he’s plugged in to at least some of the Democratic Party machinery — which is good. Potentially could shift the broader party leadership

Who will pay for no cost childcare? Where will that money come from?

Decent childcare here costs upwards of $1400/month, and we’re in freaking Fuquay-Varina. I couldn’t imagine what good childcare costs in NYC. You can’t just say “free childcare” without a plan to pay for it. And I don’t think just taxing the 1% is going to cover it.

It’s like believing DT is going to stop Russia week one of the presidency. Just not gonna happen.

" just saying, if an pro-transit mayor wants to fund some ambitious policies, there is a massive goldmine of 3 million free parking spaces in New York City just sitting there waiting to be metered"

Quote :
" 97% of New York City's three million free parking spots are free. Adding meters to just 25% of free parking spots could generate billions of dollars for the city.

Using demand-based pricing, cities can price parking by block — setting the right price to ensure a few curb spaces are open on every block.

It's simple: prices increase when demand is high and decrease when demand is low.
San Francisco successfully piloted demand-based parking and saw:

• 67% drop in parking search times
• 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
• 22% reduction in double parking"

I'm not sure I disagree but this seems like a case where trumps cruel methodologies being all over the news may have helped shift opinion.

On the other hand, Dems are dumb for acting like immigration is just a distraction/trap NOW

Polls are very sensitive to how you ask a question but there’s generally always been a high level of support for immigration and amnesty

GOP just did a good job of painting “open borders” and whipping up fears of “immigrant crime” even though immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than non-immigrants.

I guess this comes back to the same discussion we always have where democrats can’t compete in good faith with rightwing media. Either they need to destroy rightwing media or they need to start making the same bad faith statements?

^ I’m ok with that.

I wonder how many millionaires are living in NYC though. In 2018 there were at least 30,000 million dollar earners in NYC. At 2%, if my math is right, that’s 600 million dollars in extra tax revenue they’d pull in.

I feel like that would be enough to cover good childcare. That alone would cover a year’s worth of daycare/preschool for 35,000 residents (using FV dollars, at 1400/month). I feel like they would have more than 35k people needing it though.

^^You act as though I don’t do any digging most times.

The law of unintended consequences though. People with that kind of money can easily move. I mean people are already leaving NY and NYC for lower tax states and cities.

"how will we pay for it" and "higher taxes will make people move" are just two extremely common conservative talking points when the pundit, or whomever, doesn't have any good objection to the policy/tax beside "I want to keep my money"

you had a long run of falling for whatever “scandal” right wing media tried to make into a thing
