Ha. That's the attitude I have about ACC football. This year all it would take is a consistent, above average team to lead the ACC.

looking back, ECU killed us with the short passing game. They continuously ran that shotgun set where, before the snap, they motioned the receiver from one side of the field behind the QB to the other side. The QB faked the HB draw, and dumped it to the motion receiver. Meanwhile, the other receivers blocked downfield enough to get the offense 5-10 yards every time.
They kept running it over and over again because our coaches never made adjustments to defend it. Our zone coverage is safe for limiting big plays, which I'm fine with. I just don't know why we didn't assign one defender to run man-to-man with the motion receiver. 10/18/2010 10:47:40 AM |

haven't been keeping up with this thread, hope its not a repost but - what is this bullshit?
http://acc.blogs.starnewsonline.com/16891/cherry-and-his-crew-were-sour-saturday/
Quote : | "It’s customary for the visiting team to provide the officials for most nonconference college football games.
I guess the idea is to help “even things out” somewhat for the advantage the home team has by playing in a stadium full of partisan fans.
Saturday, an ACC crew led by referee Ron Cherry took that description literally by doing everything it possibly could to help N.C. State get a win at East Carolina.
I’m not here to question the integrity of any professional doing his job. I certainly wouldn’t want anyone doing that to me. Perhaps the men in stripes had a bad game or just aren’t very good. Either way, their performance at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was just plain embarrassing.
Let’s start with the fact that the game took four hours to play because of all the conferences, explanations and unnecessary reviews — not to mention Cherry’s incessant preening for the camera. Then there were the calls, which had ECU coach Ruffin McNeill and his assistants almost constantly arguing.
Among the worst were:
Two very dubious pass interference calls that nullified ECU interceptions, one of which was called so late that the flag could almost have been for the next play. …
An equally late flag on a roughing the passer infraction that helped prolong a State touchdown drive. …
A missed offside on an Wolfpack defensive lineman who eventually made the tackle on a third-down stop early in the second half. …
A blatant facemask against State that snapped Dwayne Harris’ head violently on his kickoff return late in the fourth, but wasn’t called. …
And the list goes on.
There was also an instance in the first half when the crew seemingly couldn’t make up its mind what to call on a pass that appeared to be caught in the end zone by State tight end Asa Watson. Two official signaled touchdown, but the umpire came in late waving his arms to say the pass was incomplete.
Replays eventually showed that the pass did, in fact, hit the ground before Watson caught it. But just because the play was ruled correctly, it doesn’t mean that the officials got it right.
Amazingly, in spite of all the questionable calls against it, ECU still managed to win the game 33-27 in overtime.
Hopefully, ACC director of officials Doug Rhoads will take a good, hard look at the film from Saturday’s game in Greenville and take the necessary steps to correct the problems. One solution would be to keep Cherry — football’s answer to former ACC basketball ref and fellow camera hound Dick Paparo — and his crew off any meaningful games from here on out.

Officiating was horrible both ways in that game. Both of those reviews they overturned unless they are looking at something different there is no way in hell either of those were indisputable and in my opinion were both good calls on the field they overturned to the wrong call. Also ECU had such success with their screen passes because the WR were holding almost every single play. There were bad calls both ways so at least it was consistent for both teams I suppose. 10/18/2010 2:44:05 PM |

^ a lot...the post about officiating. That "facemask" on the KO return where Harris got hurt did not look like a face mask/horse collar or anything illegal. It was a hard tackle and it did look bad...but Harris was not tackled by the face mask. I replayed it on my TV a time or 2. Our player (can't remember who...I want to say CJ Wilson but I'm probably wrong) grabbed him under the face mask and Harris went down pretty hard. But he did not grab him by the face mask.
I thought the officials were pretty bad...but it went both ways. All in all, it was a fairly evenly called game. I don't think we had an advantage over ECU at all from the refs. They missed several holds on ECU and could have called at least 1 more PI on them on a pass that was picked off. Still...not the refs fault we lost.

and lol at ecu calling foul on head tackles. they have players that don't like the helmet to helmet rule which is far more dangerous. that poor guy for rutgers will tell you that. leading with your helmet is down right malicious. tackling (good tackling) involves getting your head across the player path to stop momentum and driving with the legs and hips. sounds stupid, but take away helmets and football might actually get safer (after it weeds out the dumbasses of course )

The one officiating call that was missed IMO was the TD run by Davis in OT. I swear he went to his knees and crawled in for the last half yard. They did not show good angles on TV, but from the back view, he looked down. They could have at least reviewed that play.
Oh well, another dissapointment for NC State, what else is new. South Carolina had an even more painful loss than us so today at work has been more bearable (I live in SC). Although one dude I work with who went to Oklahoma, but has a son that graduated from State and a daughter from UNC and is a closet Tar Hole, called me a Pirate today. I just laughed.

Most of what I'd like to say has already been posted in the past few pages, but allow me to summarize to re-enforce a few points:
-we shouldn't have to play them every year, but 3 or so times a decade is fine -if we actually had a f*cking good team, it wouldn't make a difference -I don't work with or know anyone that went to ECU, but some UNC fans at work had no problem making fun of us (us being State alum). Naturally, most of the UNC fans here did not go to UNC (or even college) -the officiating was bad on both sides, I didn't think either team really had an advantage there -I wish they had reviewed ECU's OT TD. I thought he was down as well (I guess in person it was more obvious?) -our poor coaching lost this game for us, as well as RW's obsession with 30-40 yard bombs into double coverage on 3rd and 5s -I laugh at anyone who thinks we're good enough to win the ACC. That kind of faith will only bring you disappointment and heartache.
looking forward to the FSU game, GO PACK! 10/18/2010 4:50:47 PM |

most years these two teams are so evenly matched that the game is decided in the waning moments. Last year the Pirates were arguably the better team and lost. This year state had the better team and lost. just goes to show you home field advantage goes a long way.

There is no excuse for performing lewd acts on possessions that represented you. Ene drunken idiot tried to give N.C. State syphilis by sticking an N.C.
