there has been so much written on the subject in the last 2 months that it’s just a bit off putting to see a 5 year old piece as evidence of something that anyone who has been paying attention already knows and has always known

It's difficult to get an appeal even when new DNA testing methods can prove a person's innocence. I could see a couple of people maybe getting lucky with a very good lawyer, but generally the system is not designed to fairly prosecute criminals. It's designed to put people in jail and keep them there - black, brown, indigenous, and poor whites.
